Lets be honest the media is already saying they are making a bigger deal out of this then it really should be. 36k peeps die every year from the normal flu in the us. What a kid dies and we freak out. Really unless you have been to mexico city its very very hard to understand how they do things there and its a poor place. Health care is not at the top of the list and alot of em live in filth.

Why is everyone using this argument? Was some idiot ranting about this online or on tv cuz I’ve seen a bunch of other assholes using this argument, which I think is flawed.
You’re not going to *edited* everyone you see on the street, HOWEVER, you are going to touch the same doorknobs, shopping carts, ATMs, countertops, etc. And the flu is transmitted via coughing and sneezing. You’re most likely NOT going to catch AIDS from doing any of the same things that I just listed, or from having someone coughing or sneezing on you.
I’m not saying I’m gonna go around wearing a mask, but this argument just seems stupid to me. You can’t compare a sexually transmitted disease with something you can catch by standing next to a guy on the train or touching a contaminated surface. One is more easily transmissible.

But toran is right, the way AIDS and Influenza are transmitted are 2 completely differant ways. People who are using the AIDS argument are people trying to use the limelight to get their ideas across

It’s a perfectly valid argument. I can see what you are saying, no doubt it makes no sense to use that argument in your context, but, if used in a different context, it makes perfect sense. Lets say, in the context of common sense? One could argue that it is out of proportion because, everyone is flipping out about a disease which hasn’t done that much damage, it hasn’t spread as fast as aids or a real “pandemic”. It’s out of proportion in this sense because, something which kills so many, should be more of a “danger” than something which hasn’t killed (like this swine flu).
In other words, it is out of proportion for the media to go crazy over this, because when compared to a virus of a more deadly caliber(regardless of transmittance), swine flu is as harmless as a fly. The “danger” is the main thing that the media is trying to stress on, because that is the only thing that really makes this story so dramatic; way too media coverage on a mildy dangerous disease.

ParticipantI understand there was like 20 deaths in Mexico.
what I want to know, is how many people have died in the U.S? 2?
May 3, 2009 at 3:54 am #83631torankusu
ParticipantYeah, but no one is talking about it in that context. I didn’t see the quote in my comment talking about how the media is handling it and whatnot. So far, everyone I’ve seen using this argument has only talked about transmission. Condoms and masks is the topic (check Miss Owned’s comment that I quoted), not omg, the news is blowing this out of proportion.
While I’m no expert on it (but I’m learning about epidemiology), I question the arguments presented by some of these people. I mean, what knowledge do they have of the subject besides what they read on wikipedia?
There’s a huge and obvious difference in transmission in the two diseases. Why people would be more inclined to take precautions against the flu, e.g. wearing masks, is understandable since they’re not having risky, unsafe sex — they’re going about their daily activities. You’ll be shedding the virus even when you’re not showing symptoms and you can pick it up doing whatever (meaning you could be leaving the virus on stuff and infecting other people when you haven’t displayed any symptoms yet). With AIDS, it has to be transmitted via exchange of bodily fluids. And while common sense does come into play with both viruses, well, it seems that common sense is leading [some] people to be more hygienic and taking extra precautions when it comes to interaction with other people (though they should be doing this even when there isn’t a possible pandemic). It’s hard to say if common sense really exists in people who have AIDS (excluding babies born with it, people who were raped, etc.) because after like 20 years of education on prevention, people still aren’t using condoms and sometimes it’s for stupid *edited* like getting caught up in the heat of the moment, it’s awkward to stop to put on a condom, it feels better without a condom, I didn’t have one at the time, etc. I don’t see why people should be complaining about people using masks and whining about condoms for safe sex. What do you want to be done? The information is out there. But look at how it’s being used (or how it isn’t). Some people know that they can get the flu a lot easier than AIDS cuz they could just touch the doorknob that an infected person touched earlier, and some people choose to have sex without condoms.
By the way, to the part where you called it a “real pandemic,” pandemic doesn’t mean that it’s spread really fast or it’s deadly; it means disease that is widespread. And as far as I know, they said it was a possible pandemic. If everyone thinks pandemic means the same as what you think it is, no wonder everyone’s whining about the same *edited*.
The media may be giving the virus more coverage than it needs (I have no comment on this as of yet), but some of the rants I’ve come across about the flu are pretty ridiculous, the AIDS one in particular.

Hold your horses. You’re taking what I said out of context. I didn’t quote real and pandemic together. I quoted just the real. Like “real” pandemic. I’m not using real to say it isn’t a pandemic. I’m just saying swine flu is like a girly man. Sure, a girly man is still a man, but compared to other men (other “real” pandemics), hes a girly man! That was all I was saying. Granted it was a horrible comparison, and a poor way to use the word real lol.
And, I don’t think that a pandemic is something that spreads really fast or is deadly, even though all pandemics are nasty and potentially deadly (I wouldn’t want to have one anyway lol). When you compare different pandemics, like the flu versus aids versus Tuberculosis versus Malaria, swine flu is weak sauce.
I agree though, it is easy to get (insert doorknob example here)
The extra media stuff below, is just my extra, opinionated, 2 cents
everyone in this day and age is flipping out, putting on masks, and taking baths with Purell. Caused not because they actually looked into the information themselves, but probably because they were told that is what they should do, most likely by the Media blowing things out of proportion. I can’t say I blame the media though, how else do you make something as boring as the common cold get you ratings? You overemphasize the danger, and make it sound as dramatic as SARS. All about the ratings baby lol

jb last i heard it was only that one kid in houston. People dont realize that this is the flu first and foremost its the flu. We get the flu every year so dont freak out about it. Its treated the same….This wont be the be all to end all virus its just a wake up call that we are messing up in health care and we need to fix things.

ParticipantTrue. I misread that “real pandemic” vs. real “pandemic” part. Sorry. Should’ve checked before submitting.
I still stand by the portion before that, though.

All in a matter of days. And by a week, 60 to 80 percent of the worlds population would have been infected or died. That would be scary. then again they might catch those kind of viruses before they spread to far(like the Ebola virus). then again, viruses like the Ebola virus and influenza, have the ability to mutate; imagine an ebola influenza mutant virus..one that can spread as easily as the flu, but cause as much damage as ebola… :sick02: :sick01: :skull:
