Participantso………. my internets is down
but it shouldn’t be
i know enough about computers to say that i don’t know where to begin, the symptoms are that my computer claims it’s connected to ze wireless. HOWEVER it seems no data goes through, this angers Rainey Raine, and so he uninstalls his network card and reinstalls it, remembering his fury at *edited*ty menus and poorly designed programming, moving past that, the installation went well and the problem reoccurs, naturally causing the normally mild mannered Raine to slaughter millions in civilization and many other single player games while seething at his inablity to solve the problem.
Raines anger has turned into sadness…for he longs to talk with all of you on his own computer…his computer of win and cookies
sooooooo
help ze Raine?
i don’t know much
but i know i love you

Reset your cable modem/dsl. Reset your wireless router (After the modem reconnects). Reset your computer. Start->run->’ipconfig /flushdns’.
Report back here.

ParticipantAlso why use wireless, is it possible to connect directly?
June 8, 2008 at 9:23 am #48472rainefardreamer
Participanti wish i could direct connect but i don’t have a ethernet long enough, plus it’d go from my room, to a hallway to my dads office, it’d get to be a nuisance fast, plus this has worked for a while.
i did as you said liam, to the best of my knowledge, i reset everything in order, flushedns. The network work tried to connect, i think it did, but it got stuck at acquiring network address…anyways after a bit i disabled it, and renabled the connection and it went through the process with no difficulty. Yet the problem remained…
could peer guardian be *edited*ing me up?
i dunno, but any help with be nice, but my time has become less free cause my job starts up this week and i have to buy a car off this lady, which means i have to deal with the dmv and title switching and getting the car inspected in north carolina, cause she used to live in south carolina.

Could be your wireless card went bad. Assuming this is USB, plug it into another port.
Check the router settings and make sure MAC filtering is off too.

Participantit’s a pci card, i think i have another one, i’d have to dig around, cause this one had the antenna broken in transit from school, and i had to pick up another one for the antenna.
i dunno about the router, cause we have three computers on this network, and i don’t see why mine is acting different. but i’ll look around for my other wireless card and see if that’ll make any differecne, if not i’ll check the router

Participantso i’m back, not back on the internets via my own machine, but back to face this problem again
here’s the rundown, remember i can use a computer, but that’s about as far as my knowledge goes, so when you post your advice, remember to dumb it down to retarded child level.
so i took my computer out of my room and plugged it into the ethernet that comes out of this black box thingy, maybe it has a better name, but i can’t think of it, so black box it remains.
i wrote down my steps cause, maybe it’ll help? i dunno, but i felt better for doing so
1. plugged computer into ethernet from black box
2. tried to use firefox immediately, no dice
3. disabled wireless connection via network connection widow from control panel
4. repaired lan connection (windows calls it lan connection 2, i dunno why, my wireless is wireless connection 3, maybe widows just likes to count)… said it was connected and firewalled
5. tried firefox again, again no dice
6. turned off black box
7. LAN cable unplugged message shows up on taskbar
8. turned off computer
9. turned on computer, turning off takes for *edited* ever, and the blue screen, like the startup screen with saving settings and all that, is gone, i dunno when or why, it kinda makes me said.
10. opened network connections window
11. turned on black box
12. Local Area Connection 2, connected and Firewalled
13. opened firefox, again nothing : (
14. Removed hotsync, it said something about COMM1 port not used or open, i uninstalled it, but i had talked with my dad through him a friend at his work and he felt it wouldn’t matter, but regardless i got rid of it, never did use that palm pilot.
15. disabled and repaired lan connection, connected and firewalled again
16. tired firefox again, nothing
17.restarted computer, unplugged dsl line from phone jack, and turned of box
18. plugged back in, turned on box, still nothing on the firefox
and thanks the whole 9 yards
sad raine is sad, direct connect was my big hope… any possiblities? i bought new wireless card too, and tried that, netgear something or other, and it had signal strength and all that like the old one, and the computer says the device is working properly. and yet no dice on getting any information, i’ve tried internet explorer, despite my hate of it, and still nada, though in my recent test i did neglect to try both browsers, but honsetly i feel that it’s unlikely that firefox is to blame as the BOINC manager for SETI online won’t connect to the internet and neither can steam

ParticipantThis probably wont work because if you are getting a ethernet port connected message then it knows that it is there, but it is worth a try, first open up your network connections and right click on the one that you are connecting to, and go to properties. In the window that opens left click on Internet Protocol and then click the properties button. Make sure IP address and DNS server are set to obtain automatically. With that done go to start, and then run, in the run box type cmd. On the line that the cursor is on type ipconfig /release, and then type ipconfig /renew. Open up your firefox browser and try to go to a website. If that still does not work then you have a problem with your modem and/or your dsl line in general.

ParticipantWhen diagnosing connectivity problems it’s always best to use the browser Windows likes best.
Go to start, run, type cmd.exe and click ok. Now type ipconfig /all and you’ll get a list of all your internet adapters and their current settings. Find the wired port that you are trying to use and post the ip address, subnet mask, and the default gateway that it lists.
Also, if you are connecting to the dsl/cable modem you MUST reboot it (unplug/plug back in) every time you switch it between a router and PC. If you are connecting your PC to a router then nothing else is required.

ParticipantTry going to your nearest weapon store, and buying a 12-gauge pump shotgun… Shot it repeatedly 8 times.. Now the tricky part… While you’re shooting SCREAM as loud as you can, as many swear words in the 8 shot action. Then afterwards make a really loud laugh, and say “WHO IS NOT WORKING NOW!!!” …. dude i *edited*ing swear, it works for me everytime! (is that why my internet bill is like $50,000 a year?)

ParticipantHahahahah Chantz. Classic. I had a similar problem, but your setup is more basic than mine. I was cascading routers. I had to do a bunch of resets on them – My problem was that the computer would say connected, but nothing would work, wireless or wired. Most of the time I would just unplug each part, PC, router, router, Modem – and I mean unplug, not just shut down/off. Waited about a minute. And then boot them back up in reverse – Modem, router, router, PC. That finally worked for me. Obviously you have one less router, but it might work. However, from the sounds of it, you have already tried this.
I just want to make sure you are unplugging the modem and router, not just pressing the reset button. The other option is to move your IP address outside of the….damnit i forgot the word…but I had to do it with my PC side to get it to connect to the intersweb.
One final option – reinstall windows – but that would be a last resort. You could also call the DSL company and play dumb and say it was working, which it was, and now its not.

Participantso i did as bitey and masterP suggested
MasterPs was first, as bitey’s seemed like it would change things, but i did his after too, i wrote down everything that it posted, but i’ll only post what you asked for.
Before doing bitey’s thing
Ip address: 192.168.254.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (that seems odd, is it?)
default gateway: 192.168.254.254
then i did ipconfig /release and /renew
no internets
and it is set to auto-obtain dns and ip address prior to any testing, i changed nothing
after ipconfig /release and /renew
ip adress : 192.168.254.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
defualt gateway: 192.168.254.254

ParticipantDo you have a router? If so, take your router out from between the PC and DSL modem so that your plugged in directly.
Reset the DSL modem and go from there. If it still doesn’t work, call your ISP and whine, because your NIC is picking up an IP which says its not bad.

Participanti did the last thing direct connect, actually the last two times i’ve messed with it, the ethernet went straight from my computer to the black box thing. so is it time to call up the windstream and get their point of view? part two of question is when i go back to college is it possible for this problem to reoccur?

Do the IP release/renew while directly plugged in and show me if you get an IP. IF YOU DO, (something that does not start with 192.168.x.x), try typing in the command prompt “ping http://www.wcugaming.org” and see if you get responses. If you do, your internets is working and its something f***ed up with your PC. Please tell me you don’t have Norton Internet Security installed!

Participanti’m pretty sur i don’t have norton, i used to have macaffe, i think, i can check, and i’ll try it again, but i swear those results are from having a yellow ethernet cable leave my computer go to this black box that connects to the dsl line, but i’ll try it again, cause i’m pretty sure i’m retarded sometimes

Think Comcast, now think about their purchasing decisions, now think worst case scenario, congrats you’ve got a good picture.
