ParticipantIs this still a go, Kaz-Ka? If so, when and where?
March 23, 2009 at 1:12 pm #75595FTE Kaz-Ka
ParticipantYes it is. It will be Thursday in the Cardinal Room from 7:30 until 10:00.

ParticipantI ask that I get the floor for some period of time. I think the club needs to regain focus on the intentions of the club and keep those in mind while prepping for the next LAN.

Participantoh dont worry, that is one of the main things that I am going to address. If you feel I have forgotten to say something Audyo, you can take the floor

And let me go ahead and be perfectly clear on this, when we vote, only 6 games will be played by consoles at the LAN and if a game is not voted in, it WILL NOT be played at the LAN. So bring your friends to this meeting to vote on games.

Participanti think we could def start earlier and i dont understand why the shooters are always the last things to be played. They kinda get shafted by having the late time slot, but if we get the schedule right it should be a problem.

ParticipantFYI Gunbound is most likely not coming back.
March 24, 2009 at 12:57 am #75689Freezer
Participantlol we had more for gunbound than for cod4 lol but yea I agree it was fun but you guys should play something you actually WANT to play instead of a bunch of people who don’t actually bring computers to play it on(me).

I bring my Xbox everyone LAN for others to play, and I bring my own television and speakers. I think we should definitely choose games that A ) People want to play and B ) Will draw in people. I always hear the argument that if you want to play a game at a LAN then show up to the meetings. I honestly don’t feel that is entirely fair. I know of people who come from the Beach, App St., Raleigh, Gastonia/Charlotte, and Hickory who would come to our LANs if there were better game choices, and its almost impossible for them to drive that far just to show up for a 2 to 3 hour meeting in the middle of the week. Just my two cents.

My understanding was Gunbound had 4…
Dark Omen I know it’s not fair but that’s how it’s always been. We can’t just arbitrarily set the games to be played, doing so would put us out of touch with our communities. If someone wants to attend the meeting they can do so either by phone or IRC, both give them voting rights for games.
March 24, 2009 at 1:52 am #75702Freezer
ParticipantJust FYI 8 people played gunbound and at least one more wanted to but didn’t want to mess up brackets. but I do agree that unless people come out of the woodwork screaming for it, its done for now.

Participantwell honestly cod4 should be on the way out too anyways… besides its such a pain to install.
March 24, 2009 at 9:25 am #75715
Adam FaulknerParticipantbeing a pain to install is a huge issue for me atleast. its like the size of visual studio.

March 24, 2009 at 3:27 pm #75797Lemm
Participantnot to rag on organization but the failure to install ahead of time was a problem in both cod4 and l4d….
mebbe we could have done a better job of setting people up with games they don’t have at an earlier time and I think from now on we should test each game server on the pc section the night before the lan just so we don’t run into any issues like we did with css.. and I understand it was working last time it ran but apparently after this example things just magically get messed up..
so yah this is just a few suggestions
+ also people were packing up and leaving by the time cod4 rolled around anyway.. so i don’t think you can put that number as the game did that
March 24, 2009 at 5:53 pm #75818MasterP
ParticipantWell what screwed us up is that the servers weren’t touched or screwed with at all and yet some were magically different between the last LAN and this one. I could very easily pass the blame on this one but won’t for fear of sounding redundant.
The install issue is complex. Over half the computers that are brought don’t have enough power to install a large game like CoD4 while playing another game and the big problem with Left4Dead was that people didn’t want to have to play TF2 on a seperate account, thus losing their achievements, while installing it. The Left4Dead issue is very easily fixed, the CoD4 not so much.

ParticipantStreet fighter was a huge draw, and I didn’t see many people playing NCAA at all, ever.
But L4D was popular, altough few actualy played in the tournament.
Also, shouldn’t tournaments benifit the skilled?
Random asignments seem like a good idea, but in the end, the less skilled players can just ride the coattails of pros.
Heres my idea:
Everyone gets in on a game and plays it like usuall.
Payloads would most likely be our best bet as they give ample time for players to get warmed up and really shine.
A warm up on dustbowl or something may work too if we have time.
We then take the highest scoring people from each team, and make teams based on those scores.
This way, we wont have to worry about guessing peoples skill level, and it will reward the good players.

i like the idea of taking players scoors, but really dont see how thats too much different than what we did this go around, just a different way to do the same thing. Also looking at the underline you just hated on how it was ran, then suggested the same thing? or are you saying group all the pro’s together? which is obviously not fair? /nodice is lost
March 24, 2009 at 8:40 pm #75837Freezer
ParticipantI do believe thats what he is saying dice and I agree that really isnt fair. you basically pick the winners that way.
March 25, 2009 at 1:10 am #75869Nebs
ParticipantThe point of having a real tournament is to benefit/determine the skilled. Otherwise, it’s all just free play. If you’re talking about any system that imposes artificial “fairness,” you no longer have any reason for a tourney. Skill should be rewarded in a tournament setting, period. If that’s a problem, you don’t have to enter.
March 25, 2009 at 8:41 am #75881
Adam FaulknerParticipantJust a FYI this club is not about winning prizes. I have actually told some of the other exec’s that having prizes as something you win for a tourney is starting to create more fuss than its worth. I think we should give people like paper awards for winning a tourney and prizes for the drawings and other random stuff.
One thing about this club that is different than appstate is that we try to stay away from team play. I dont think its cool to have a group totally dominate a tourney just to win a 6 dollar mouse pad or 8 dollar t shirt. It is not cool to think that having a “tournament setting” is something we want or need.
This is college and none of the people other than maybe Keith Kelly is going to make it to make a living out of playing video games from WCU.
I understand that the structure for the tournament may not have been in favor of the best gamer, but it did work out well. Nobody got up and threw their keyboard at the CL or banged the desk so hard that they were told to calm down. *(laugh dice / inside joke)* But we did give away a prize.
March 25, 2009 at 9:15 am #75884Oh Malley
ParticipantMy only issue against the whole “team play” regard is that when I was the only one over consoles that I couldn’t do it because it’s wrong and creates the wrong atmosphere. However, I contend that people who bring their friends to LANs want to team with their friends to play together rather than some random kid that they don’t even know. But I understand the notion of not wanting to bring in “professional teams” granted they have no reason to come here to begin with other than to have fun.
