Kellum NUB
ParticipantHey. Just thought I’d pop by since I play on your server quite a bit.
Been playing this game for about a month now and still Nubbin’ it up
Any ideas on the average time it takes to wash that off?March 22, 2007 at 4:20 am #18514gxti
ParticipantI’ve been playing for years and I’m still a nub. Learn to enjoy it

Participantyou’ll get used to doing things better if you always stop to consider what you could have done better in a fight. My usual first reaction is a cuss word belittling my killer, and then serious focus on what he may have been doing right and what I did wrong. A lot of times people might make derogatory comments like calling you a sneaker (someone said that to me the other night). That just reflects their lack of skills. Take advantage of every contingency and situation. Hope this helps man. Im Brian by the way. Enjoy having you on the server
It really isn’t the amount of time you play that makes you better, it is how fast you break yourself of bad habits and adapt, the game isn’t about will power, but finesse.March 22, 2007 at 5:24 am #18517aznjun
Participantto be honest, it took me about a year for me. but I still think you get used to source faster than 1.6. lol This is still an ongoing battle!

ParticipantListen to Brian, his comments do help. They helped me out, and I have gotten better because of them.

Participanthrm. let’s see, i’m still fairly noobtastic, but I’m almost top100 somehow. I don’t know how, but here’s what I do:
think of the dumbest weapon possible to use in a situation.
buy it
keep getting pwnd until you know where they normally go
if there’s a flank, take it
(knife flanks will make you a server god in no time, i am evidence of such)if you keep getting uber-pwnd, save up for the ONLY gun under the machine gun category. buy it and charge the incoming mass of rape. pull the trigger and don’t let go. you will get at least a good chance of bullet-spamming them to death.
if all else fails, buy ONLY a HE grenade, pull pin, run into enemy. suicidal, i know, but you get lucky every now and then.
and the most important one of all:
rush like there’s no tomorrow, and DON’T STOP FOR ANYTHING
enjoy your instant win sauce

Participanteh, i do that t or ct. it is an act of desperation, or just of me being silly

ParticipantMy recommendations are:
Buy a p228, it will save your life. (3rd pistol)
Always f1 autobuy cause you’ll forget to buy a kit at the most crappy moment.
If your rifle/smg runs out of ammo use q to fast weapon switch to your pistol. Reloading usually reorganizes your face in the worst possible way.
Don’t reload everytime you kill someone, they usually travel in packs.
Short and sweet bursts make for lots of head shots.
Running past a flash grenade can often counter its effects.
If you’re going to rush, don’t stop in a hallway or small room. This generally leads to your team getting raped within a few short seconds. On the same note, if you are on the team getting rushed, people generally stop in hallways and small rooms. This is what the HE grenade is for.
Watch the minimap, it tells you exactly what’s going on.
And last, make sure you’re talking to your team mates and they are talking to you. You put me on a team with Flakes or Brian, we can own another team with just the two of us by talking our way through the rounds.
And last again, talking puts a HUGE speaker icon over your head. Don’t talk and sneak; you give yourself away.

That only applies to situations with alltalk, like scoutzknivez. The speaker won’t show up unless you can actually hear the person.

ParticipantBrian and Kuros give a lot of really good tips to start off with and become better with, as well as Falcon amazingly. I’d have to completely agree with the both of their points but to change up and add a few things as well.
The P228 is a great pistol, great for rushing and pretty good when not. If you’re going to go for a long-ranged attack situation (awp, scout, etc) get a DEagle. If you’re not going to rush, get a DEagle. The DEagle has a better accuracy when firing from long distances, its damage is more potent and has a better overall effect from a distance. Up close the DEagle lacks the ammo in clip and the firing rate.
As much as you probably don’t want to, pick up an AWP or a Scout. AWPing and Scouting is possibly one of the best things to do to quicken your reaction times. The faster you can react to an enemy crossing your crosshair, the faster you can react to them with an AK/Colt. Not only will AWPing and Scouting help you overall with your reaction time, it will help with knowing the wherabouts if your team as well as the enemy. If you sit some place with the AWP while your team goes another, more than likely you’ll get flanked and killed easily. Depend on your sound, through and through. Sound will save your life countless amounts of time, whether you hear people coming or whether you hear gunfire in another direction.
Throw flash bangs and smokes. I’m terrible at this sometimes myself, but learn to throw flash bangs and smokes -all- the time. You’ll learn that 9 times out of 10 when you throw a flash, someone is going to be flashed. If you think the enemy is there, throw it. Them being blind is only an advantage to you.
As Kuros said, use bursts. Far distances use a burst with the AK/Colt. Typically a 3-4 round burst starting at the chest of an enemy will end up going straight to the head. Go play on some aim_ak-colt maps and learn to hit from a distance. The quicker you learn this the more often it’ll save your life.
Quicken your R/T, learn the maps in and out, depend on sound, and use burts. It’ll help you out in the long run.
Once you feel good enough, I suggest getting on IRC and on Gamesurge, go to #findsourceringer and play some Scrims with some clans. Scrimming and playing in matches will increase your skill 10-fold. Learning to play with a team and not bait your team is crucial to the survival of yourself, and your team.

ParticipantAwesome, thanks for the suggestions. I been trying to learn when to spray and when to burst. With that, to learn how to counteract some of the recoil as well.
As for the AWP/Scout, to avoid embarrassing myself completely, I usually practice those with bots solo, or on scoutsknives (where I tend to lose a good 100pts time).
Anyone know of a map that can be used where it’s mostly open space so I wouldn’t have to go around searching for lost bots?
Thanks again and look forward to Nubbin’ it up some more on your server
March 22, 2007 at 8:18 pm #18537Kuros
ParticipantPlay sk vs hard bots. You will be forced to get good at aiming really fast.
March 22, 2007 at 8:33 pm #18540Falcon
Participantoh, and this may just be scoutzknivez-specific, and again it may only just be me being an idiot, but play it up some using the scope, then once you’re comfortable with roughly where the middle of your screen is, try to play entire rounds without using your scopes. Especially if you do this against Kuros, gxti, Brian, and Flakes, you will be forced to get good at a decent pace. I went off the scope only a few days ago, and (though I hate using this as motivation because I don’t want to encourage being a stat-driven lame-o) the last few rounds I did so I was clearly over +100 points / session.
And flakes makes an outstanding point I can’t believe I forgot: learn to love your ears, they will save your life repeatedly. If you listen enough to be able to tell where people are based on sound, and use your map with that when you can, you will be a LOT more informed
and finally, if you find yourself aiming dead-on and still missing, it may be the weapon’s spray pattern. to check this, get a map with a long clear hallway or alley and play it solo. run to one end and spray the target spray. then try to hit it from various distances, crouching/not, running/not, walking/not, etc.

ParticipantInvert your mouse. Surprisingly some people try to play without an inverted mouse. Even if you’ve gamed for a while without using inverted it is worth making the change — unless you’re pr0 and uber 1337 freak.
Find your sensitivity. I am still fine tuning my sensitivity. Do this through the console. Currently my zoom_sensitivity_ratio is 0.94 and my sensitivity is 1.79. I use a Logitech G5 @ 2000 dpi. You shouldn’t use my numbers, but you should find what works well for you.
Find a resolution that works for you.
Play with headphones.
Sit comfortably.
Technical details aside, never let up after you kill one person. Like Kuros said, people travel in packs and reloading or falling back too quickly after killing someone leaves you very vulnerable. It does not take many bullets to kill someone — an ill-timed reload is stupid.
If your team is under fire PLEASE LOOK AT THE MAP. YOU CAN SEE THE ENEMY AND THE DIRECTION THE ENEMY IS LOOKING. It’s an easy/free kill to swing around the corner and pop the baddie in the back of the head. Friendly fire is off on the server. Pay attention and listen and you will be rewarded with easy kills. Counter-Strike: Source is not difficult.
Recognize that 1-shot headshots from scrubs will happen. It’s not always a hacker, but crap happens a lot and managing your frustration will help you play better longer. I’m a bit emotional when I play and nub deaths do get under my skin.
Be patient. It’s a 12v12 server. Even if you are good and have a 3, 4 or 5 K:D ratio you will not sustain this for the course of a map (unless you’re a T on de_port, or other incredibly lopsided maps) and you will not be able to kill very many people at once (even P90 spray will only get you 3-4 lucky/bull*edited* kills before you die — remember, people run in ZERGS). Don’t try to do it all and don’t try to be a hero. That transitions well into my next point,
COMPLETE THE OBJECTIVES. Thankfully the admins here strongly encourage objectives. If you want to deathmatch then play fy_iceworld (or any of its ilk).
Ask me for pointers anytime!

i didn’t know that anyone else inverted their mouse. personally i have since the beginning of my fps career. i guess i was used to flight games and such and the transition was easier, but everyone else i know always keeps their mouse uninverted. so i’d say inverted mouse ftw. also never underestimate the power of a good smoke or flashbang, and flanking is a nice way to up ur KDR.
