Participantthinking about upgrading, something that won’t cry during oblivion or command and conquer 3 and supreme commander. Something powerful and cheap, though all suggestions are welcome, along with any advice

ParticipantHow cheap is “cheap”? What’s your budget? Also, do you have PCIe or are you using AGP?

ParticipantIf you have PCI express 16, I would recommend the Nvidia Geforce 7950 GT KO. It’s cheap and a really nice card.

Participanti’ve got a pci, i’d like to not break 300, any anything closer to 200 would be sweet

Participantyou can buy any good card for 200 bucks. stick with ati though, nvidia likes to overheat and melt.

ParticipantnVidia’s overheating problem only really happens when you overclock the card to extreme amounts or have insufficient cooling. Their mid-range cards are *edited* good, as Kuros said you can probably get the 7950 KTKO for a cheap amount now, maybe $300-350.
And this is coming froma guy with an ATI. I can’t wait to build my new rig, lulz.

ParticipantI had a 5600 card when i first built my computer, the fans on the heatsink eventually melted and i smelled burning so i turned off the computer. No overclocking at all, and internal temperatures (case) were around 35*. Got an ATI 9600, basically the equivalent card, same price, same specs, and the difference was just astonishing. 10-20 point fps boosts, much smoother and quicker reactions, etc etc.
Firstly, I suggest getting an ATI card, and secondly, i don’t suggest spending over 200 for it, because as with all things computer related, they either day or need to be upgraded in a few months.
and seriously, 400 dollars on a graphics card… put that towards an hdtv or a 36” monitor/tv.

I got mine for $280 in February, so it’s probably well under $250 now. I’ve seen an overheating problem in ATI, and never Nvidia, so as far as overheating goes, it’s going to be a possibility (however slight) with either card. That’s what warranties are for. But I will say that I push two monitors at 1280×1024 and I’m not running any handicapped config in source for fps and I still get around 90-100 even while piping both monitors. When I was running a single monitor config, I could push up to 160 fps in source at max settings. Get the 7950 GT KO, you’ll love it. I’m also currently running at 1.07 GB of memory usage so that’s hurting my fps as well. This card rocks.

Participantsweet, i checked it out on newegg, 213 i think, sounds pretty sweet, i might be able to finish oblivion with more than 20 fps or so…god that final rush was so frustating, like playing with photographs…dust of my nord warrior and go out for a slugfest. maybe 4 legged creatures won’t make it lag, however it was handy to know when a dire wolf (or whatever) was following me

WOAH!!
What processor do you have?
I forgot how many FPS I get with Oblivion, but something that low scares the
of me. I feel sorry for you.
I think you should go for this though http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=178867 (8600 GT) I heard that it had decent frame rates (higher than 20 =]) for Oblivion besides 150 bucks for a Geforce – 8 card is pretty good no?

ParticipantWhen I just made this comp, I ran half life 2, WoW, and Oblivion at the same time spread out through my 2 monitors and still had a pretty good frame rate. I have 2x geforce 7600 gt’s with water cooling so I clock em a bit. The cards have done me well, and should prob be pretty cheap by now.
