ParticipantSo, as you may kno, my monitor has kicked teh bucket and now that its the weekend and i have time, i set it up so that my tv can be used as a monitor.
So everything boots fine and i can use most programs but the second i open CS or any steam game, The screen goes black, and a message pops up saying that “Mode Is Not Supported: VGA: 1” i still get sound but from then on, until i reboot i cant get picture
I know this means i need to reconfigure everything so that it will work in the VGA mode, but i have no clue where to start. i checked Vista’s resolution properties, and fiddled with my vid card setting hoping it would work. Also note, that its previous monitor was hooked up via VGA
i also checked to see if it needed software to run, but apparently its all plug n play….so i dunno what to do

ParticipantIf everything works until you open a game then it’s most likely a game config problem. If Windows works then there is no reason to touch any of your non-game related video settings. Try manually entering 800×600 in your game configs to reset it to something you can work with.

ParticipantIs the message a Windows message or a monitor message? That sort of message is usually given by a monitor when you are trying to display at a resolution it doesn’t support, hense why I said reset your game config. Changing to HDMI won’t do a thing if you’re still trying to use a resolution the monitor doesn’t support.

so how do i go about changing the config file without raping steam?

Pull up your game list in Steam. Right click CS then go to properties. Click set launch options. Put “-d3d -w 1024 -h 768” in there WITHOUT the “”. This should force your computer to play CS with DirectX at 1024×768. From there you can set it however you want.

OpenGL is a different rendering engine. It’s old as balls. Direct X is updated and maintained while OpenGL is outdated crap (it used to be *edited*ing awesome). Use d3d, your card will utilize it better.

Please help.On a computer that old you can’t make CS1.6 look any better than it already does. What I posted above is for people who are having trouble getting INTO the game.

ParticipantThe most you can do is up the resolution/texture counts.

Participantbump.
While its wonderful to play games again, how would i go about getting back to a 1650×1050 from 1024×768? as of this moment i probably wont be getting a monitor untill thanksgiving-ish which is why i am wondering
everytime i try to change the resolution or from 16 bit to 32 bit it says that it wont work and then it reverts to software mode then closes itself
October 6, 2008 at 3:11 am #58948MasterP
Participantidk I have never been able to get CS1.6 to use 32bit as it does the same thing as yours, crashes and resets to default. You can try manually forcing it to that resolution using the same method I described earlier.
