ParticipantI’m seeking help from anyone who knows about computer stuffs. Recently my computer seems to have decided I’m playing too many video games because now sometimes when I play counterstrike: source or Diablo2:LoD, the only ones i’m currently playing, it will start lagging to an extreme degree and even when I manage to exit out of the game it continues to lag. So when I reboot my computer during this experience an evil blue screen comes up that says I have a “Hardware Malfunction” and something about “PCI on the motherboard”. Once a black screen came up when I was starting up the computer that said it was “unable to initialize expandable ROM” and something about PCI again. The computer is still under warranty since I bought it through clemson university so I took it to them and they ran a bunch of antivirus antispyware stuff and said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it and if it happened again bring it back. Well it happened again and so I am now in Clemson with some guy working on my computer again. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be? I deduced from my minimal computer knowledge that it had something to do with the graphics card since it only occured during gaming, but I very likely could be wrong. Also I noticed that when playing counterstrike my computer seemed to run it slower than it used to but this could just be my imagination combined with the poor internet connection I’ve been playing on recently.

ParticipantIf your getting hardware malfunctions, memory errors and pci errors sounds like it could be either the Power Supply going bad or the motherboard is going.

ParticipantThat doesn’t sound good…

ParticipantYeah, but they told me today they fixed it and i just got home and tried to use it and the error came up again. Those *edited* liars… I guess I have to call them and *edited* them out some but now I have to go to work and it must wait.

ParticipantLooks like you’re either getting over heated, as in (Bad Sink) or your motherboard has got some issue which could have been caused by bad electricity current or PSU (Power Supply Unit).
be glad you’re under warranty, cuz whatever happens they’ll take care of it.

Participanti had an overheating problem a few months back. turned out my fan had busted when i dropped my laptop. dell inspiron 600m is notorious for overheating anyway, tho. It only happened sometimes, but my fps would drop to like 4, whole comp would be unusable. I didn’t get the PCI errors you’re describing tho, just relating my experience.

Participantthe fan still makes noise when I’m doing demanding tasks so I don’t think its broken. But you’re saying it could be the battery that is defective? This could be possible because there was a battery recall on my type of laptop but my computer’s serial number wasn’t on the list of recalled batteries. However, today after they failed to fix my computer and I brought it home the blue screen came up when I wasn’t playing a game.

ParticipantSo i’m pretty sure my computer is overheating because when the error came up last i felt the bottom of my laptop and it was really hot. A new battery will fix this most likely?

Dude you need a new heatsink not a new battery haha. If you dont have a warranty I’d suggest get it to your school/college tech support to get it fixed for ya. If you were close by Elon U (5 milles away from WCU) I could have taken care of your laptop man, I work at the tech helpdesk here at the university and we give friends fixes.
Anyways. Try to get a mobo/heatsink..

ParticipantWell I took it back to the tech people at clemson and now they are replacing the motherboard and graphics card. I told them i thought it might be overheating but i didn’t seem to convince anyone… Interesting that I told them the first day I took it that I thought it was a problem with the graphics card and now they’re finally getting around to looking at that… Now I won’t get my computer back until like wednesday, this blows.

Participantawe man, sorry to here that man… those people over at ccit need to step it up a bit, i mean heck, you’d thing the tech support at a university that large would really be more on the ball…
sounds like they are finnally figuring things out anyway, hope your computer gets fixed soon man…

ParticipantYa like everyone else said you motherboard is probably just over heated or dieing…. do what i did, put a huge fan right beside the computer and you should be fine..lol
