Dustin Faulkner informed me that there are plans for a mini LAN that could happen next weekend. There are some considerations that need to be taken into account first however if possible the WCUGaming club will be hosting a mini LAN to get freshman involved and allow for open enrollment for new membership.

    Someone please post more information.

I just wanted to try and host a LAN for the freshman to make them aware of the Gaming Club and increase attendance of the LANs. We are trying to get the switch from IT but other than that we have the room reserved and have enough tables and outlets. We are planning on Lanning Halo: Reach, Black Ops, Guitar Hero and possibly a Wii console if we can get our hands on one.

The club owns a 48 port switch that would suit you guys just fine.

You’ll need to contact Stephen in networking with which port you plan on plugging the switch into so he can remove some of the security policies on it.

Emailed Stephan about the hub, if he doesn’t respond before Wends I will call. What would you suggest about power?

Go ahead and call, Stephen very rarely replies to email from students he doesn’t know. I’m telling you though, the club owns a 48 port netgear switch that is exactly what you guys need.

Unless there’s a power hookup, there’s nothing you really can do about power. Just make sure that you balance the load really well and pray the room has multiple circuits. Make sure that there is an RA on duty in the lobby so that when a circuit trips they can help you reset it. Having done this for years I can tell you console players are the worst at power setup and are the only group to trip circuits at an actual LAN so someone will have to babysit the entire setup period to make sure people don’t daisychain surge protectors. Rule of thumb is 1 Surge protector for each wall outlet, anything over that and you risk a blackout. For calculation purposes, below is a list of the power consumption of devices and the max allowed per breaker.

    TVs

    Average plasma: 300 watts

    Average LCD (standard): 110 watts

    Average LCD (LED): 100 watts

    Consoles

    PlayStation 3: 200 watts

    PlayStation 3 Slim: 100 watts

Xbox 360 (all modems): 200 watts

Nintendo Wii: 20 watts (that’s not a typo)

Theoretical max on a 15 amp breaker: 1800 watts

Absolute max on a 15 amp breaker: 2100-2400 watts (depending on bulding wire quality)

Everything is good to go! Thank you all for your help in this and thank you Dustin for helping me set this up I really appreciate it! Switch is in Scott, Flyers are up and everything is set!

Hopefully this will inform freshman of WCU Gaming Club and make them want to join and participate in future LANs

If you need it, the club has about 100 ethernet cables ranging from 10 ft to 100 ft. We also have 16-24 power strips and about a dozen of those high-gauge orange extension cables.

Also, I cannot stress enough how important it is for Stephen to clear the networking wall port that you’re going to use. If he doesn’t you won’t have any internet on any device plugged into the switch. I don’t think you’ll even pull IP addresses. Essentially, the networking closet sees that you’ve plugged in a high-count switch and disables the port to prevent you from using it. If you’re LAN only you’ll be fine but if you need to connect to XBL, PSN, or NWFC for matchmaking it’ll really rain on your parade.

Congrats on organizing it and good luck with the recruitment. Regardless of turnout, it’s great experience for a future leadership position in the club. Hint, hint :D

The turn out was actually better than I expected!

We had around 14-15 new faces come out and LAN all day in Scott.

I am pretty positive most of them will be coming to the March LAN!

I think I am going to try and do this every semester to just to make everyone aware that Western does have a gaming club and its great to be apart of it. Thanks to Dustin and the alumni with helping me plan this, I think it was really effective!

    Congrats on the successful event.

Something like this would make a nice monthly thing.
