We’ve had a few projected release dates. Hopefully this one is for real this time.

I won’t get it. No PS3. My friend who has one better! I need more MGS!

This is the reason to get a PS3. Sony did something smart. I love MGS. My avatar is MGS. I’d rather see this on a 360 though. =/

I never want to see MGS on xbox, it started on PS and should stay there, just like I would never want to see smash brothers on any other system other than a Nintendo one. Same for Final Fantasy, the main story anyways, sequels and prequels have been done on other systems, but the main storyline should stay where it came from.

Well, they tried it once with the first version of MGS2:Substance and it kind of sucked. The XBox could barely handle the fact that it was raining on the first level and the controls were absolute bollocks.

So, unless they were going to try real hard, I’d rather see it stay on the Playstation as well.

There were two Metal Gear Solid games on Nintendo systems: Twins Snakes on the Gamecube and Ghost Babel on Gameboy Color. Also, the first two Metal Gears were ported to the Famicom in Japan. The NES got a crappy port of Metal Gear and a terrible non-canon sequel.

I think there is a greater probability of seeing MGS on a non-Sony system than seeing Smash Bros on a non-Nintendo system. Konami is a third party developer; Smash Bros has been made by Nintendo’s second-party developers sinse the begining and features characters trademarked by a first-party developer. This means there are only two ways Nintendo would allow their characters on another company’s system:

    1. They abandon the hardware business altogether (SEGA).

    2. They get tripped up by their own contracts.

Konami and Sony teamed up and is releasing a bundle with the purchase of the PS3 you get MGS4 with it when that comes out.

So is Squenix, but it’s still considered a flagship developer for Sony. Konami is no different. While they may release games on other consoles, they still have extreme loyalty to Sony and its systems. Whether that will change with the current generation remains to be seen, I think. Especially since Kojima himself has made no mention of wanting to do a port of 4.

It is unlikely that MGS4 will be ported to another system, but it would not really surprise me. They have no legal obligation to keep the series on one system and have ventured onto other consoles before. Even if MGS4 is a bundle-title, it’s not like Konami can be sued for putting it on the 360 later. Also, I wouldn’t exactly call Square-Enix a flagship for Sony.

Here’s a fun way to remember it:

    First-Party=Monarch

    Second-Party=Concubine

    Third-Party=Street *edited*

Oh, I know very well that Squenix produces for other systems, particularly Nintendo. One can’t deny they’ve been close friends with Sony for a long time though. Final Fantasy and Sony are practically synonymous for most gamers. After all, all major/numbered Final Fantasy titles are on the Sony consoles not to mention a host of non Final Fantasy rpgs/adventures/whatever else they’ve cooked up with rpg elements. Squenix is a major player for Sony, and I’m more than willing to consider them flagship, even these days.

The first six Final Fantasies and first six Dragon Warriors were all originally on Nintendo consoles. In recent years, all those FF titles were remade on Nintendo consoles. You are correct: Square and Konami have made more money for Sony than Nintendo over the last decade. But, if I were a big shot, working for one of the first-party developers, I would be suspicious of a third-party’s loyalty. After all: http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/snake.html

To ellaborate on a point I was making earlier:

First parties (Nintendo, Sony) are like monarchs or aristocrats. They have all the power and everybody wants a piece.

Second parties (Rare, HAL Labs) are like concubines. They work exclusively for a single person, but are still considered a totally seperate person. It is certainly possible that, sometime in the future, they will work for another. Once this happens, there’s no going back. You are dead to your former lover.

Third parties (Capcom, Konami) are like street walkers. They will give it up to anybody with the money. Oh, when you’re with her, she’s all like, “You’re the best! I will never love another!” but you know it’s a crock. Fifteen minutes after you leave, she’ll be saying the same thing to some other guy. What’s worse, you have to check your pockets to make sure she didn’t steal your *edited* wallet. It dosen’t matter how many times you visit her or how much money you give her, when she’s with all her friends, she’ll probably joke about your sexual prowess. *edited*s!

True, only the Sony Playstation didnt even exist yet (or in the case of the later games, it had just been released). That’s not exactly fair. Same for the early Metal Gear games.

I see the point you’re making. I just think more credit should be given to both Third Party developers considering the incredible success they’ve enjoyed and given Sony on the various Playstation incarnations. They spread their talent around, sure, but more often than not they’re playing in the Sony camp.

New news. Or at least old news, this time from Konami’s mouth:

KONAMI DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT REVEALS DETAILS FOR METAL GEAR SOLID®4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS

EL SEGUNDO, CA – February 28, 2008 – Following opening remarks made during the General Session at the 2008 Destination PlayStation retailer event in Scottsdale AZ, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. confirmed several new initiatives related to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, including a North American street date, online multiplayer, and pre-sell program.

    Street Date

Opening remarks revealed that the final chapter in the saga of super spy Solid Snake is expected to arrive in stores in North America on Thursday June 12th, 2008. “Blockbuster events and premieres are a tradition of the summer,” said Kazumi Kitaue, Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. Chairman and CEO. “We anticipate that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots fits that bill perfectly, and consumers will be waiting in line to get their copy of the game just like it’s a hit Hollywood movie.”

    Metal Gear Online Starter Pack

It was also confirmed today that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will launch with the Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack” supporting online gameplay. In addition to the single player experience, gamers will also be able to take the action online with up to 16 players and battle it out using the latest weapons and stealth techniques.

Fair enough. But the GBA, DS, and PSP existed at the same time, Square’s involvment with Sony didn’t stop them from rereleasing the first six FF game on Nintendo’s handhelds (admitedly, I and II were also rereleased for the PSP). It is very wise for a first-party developer to court the affections of a third-party developer and get some sweet exclusives out of the deal. That is a recipe for success. However, it is also wise to understand that third-party developers are very independent and, in the long run, may very well jump ship.

    Several examples:

    Square: Nintendo-Sony

    Enix: Nintendo-Sony-Nintendo

    Konami: Nintendo-Sony

    Capcom: Nintendo-Sony

    Sega: Sega-Ninteno

True, true. I still consider them flagship developers though, despite them having a hand in both major companies pockets (Poor 360 seems mostly left out of the Japanese developer alliances, though that seems to be changing). And bah, Sega is a non entity now. Nintendo only tries to be nice and allow them to maintain their identity. :)

    BETA INFO

    Posted: 14 Apr 2008 07:08 PM CDT

Welcome to the kick-off of “Metal Gear Mondays” on PlayStation.Blog! Here we’ll be bringing weekly articles about Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Online packed with news and content including surprise announcements, guest authors, and much more!

This week we’ll go into a lot of detail on Metal Gear Online and the upcoming MGO Beta. You must attain a free pre-order bonus gift “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2″ DVD with MGO Beta Unique Product Voucher Code (UPVC) insert to participate in the MGO Beta as explained in our post last week.

If you have attained a MGO Beta UPVC, then Thursday, April 17th, this week, the download of the MGO Beta client will be available to you through the PlayStation Store on your PS3 (but please bear in mind, gameplay does not start until April 21st , and then will run until May 5th) – again, please do not try to redeem your UPVC before April 17th, you will just get an error message. You need to carefully follow the instructions provided on the MGO Beta UPVC insert in order to get at the download of the MGO Beta client through the PlayStation Store on your PS3. It is also important to note that your UPVC for the MGO Beta is good for only one PS3/PSN/PlayStation Store account, so you should absolutely NOT share your UPVC with anyone (unless you plan to forfeit your MGO Beta to whoever you give the UPVC to). There will not be any additional issue/reissue, replacement, etc of these codes – so again, we stress, please DO NOT share your UPVC for the MGO Beta with anyone!

Once you’ve got the MGO Beta client downloaded and installed, it’s time to load it up. Upon launching and going past the main menu, you’ll see that you need to sign up for a Konami ID. What is a Konami ID you ask? It is Konami’s service that has actually been around for a while in Japan, which basically allows for a unified account and access across various Konami products and services. Konami ID will be used for the first time in MGO for the US, and using the Konami ID allows for some of the really unique features we plan to offer the community with MGO. Once you hit the Konami ID sign up menu option, you should notice something subtle, but really cool: MGO launches the PS3 web browser from in-game and takes you to the Konami ID registration page. You can also simply visit http://id.konami.net from your favorite Web browser right now and sign up as well, to get a head start!

Metal Gear Online Beta Postponed, Extended

    Posted: 21 Apr 2008 07:50 PM CDT

Hi all! As many of you already know, the Metal Gear Online Beta, originally scheduled to launch today, April 21st 2008, has been postponed. Due to this, we’ve also put a hold on our regularly scheduled Metal Gear Mondays content on the PS Blog, to bring you the latest news.

Extraordinary levels of traffic from all over the world have caused the MGO Beta servers to destabilize, as such, the service has been unable to run. Because of this, we have made the following changes to the schedule.

The MGO team in Japan is currently working around the clock to stabilize the servers, and is aiming to launch gameplay this weekend of April 26th. We must note, given the current situation, this is subject to change.

To compensate for the delay, the MGO Beta period has been extended a week, now ending on May 11th. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that your MGO Beta UPVCs will only be valid up until May 5th 2008, so please make sure to register them by then.

Please stay tuned to konami.com, the PS Blog, the Konami ID site, and Konami Japan’s MGO teaser site for all the latest MGO Beta status updates. If you need assistance, please contact us via http://www.konami-data.com/support/ and you can email us at mgobetasupport@konami.com.

We would like to apologize for this inconvenience, and thank you for your patience. We know that you can’t wait to get started with Metal Gear Online, and we truly appreciate your enthusiasm, as well as your participation in the MGO Beta test – which really helps make MGO the best it can be!

    Thank you!
