ParticipantFirst off I just want to say, “Hi!!!!” (first real post in the community)
I have heard that the map rotation era may be coming to an end. This saddens me as I highly enjoy having the rotation in place. It keeps the overplayed maps from becoming exactly that, overplayed. While most of us do enjoy refreshing, and new maps, switching the system to map voting isn’t the answer. Map voting just really doesn’t work. Often times unfavorable maps will all be the choices for the following map. Unfavorable maps will be chosen way too often. So how do we get to play new maps? Admins can easily put up a simple vote, but if the map is not as popular or known as it may need to be, it will most likely fail. My suggestion is to add one, or maybe even two, map slots to the rotation, equal distance apart, that get rotated in weekly, or biweekly. This way, the community will get acquainted with the new map(s), and also the thirst of new maps will be quenched as well. This just modifies and improves upon a system that is already working very well. What maps that should be added is for a different discussion, what should be discussed is the idea itself. (and how map voting sucks!

ParticipantTake a look at App State’s forums, they are talking about how they intend to switch to rotation to SAVE their server. We do not need map voting. We are doing just fine as is.

Participanti can also you that point of view and we dont need a vote, i agreee i could care less if we had it or not// what we need is to get rid of maps that kill the server.

ParticipantActually, what would be interesting to see is a vote to skip ahead into the rotation after a few minutes of playing a map.
For example, as we all know, militia is the stack of the century map and most don’t like playing it for that reason.
Well after playing for 10 or 15 minutes players would be able to “rockthevote” which would enable them to skip to the next map in the rotation if 3/4 of the server agreed ( 50 % is just too small a percentage for me). This would allow us a few circumstances:
1. Every map would still be played, even if for a limited time
2. Unliked maps would be cycled more frequently
3. Admins would not have to risk getting in trouble for changing the map when most of the population wants a map change, but our admin rules prevent us from doing so
4. Our players have the potential to enjoy the server more.
5. It would show that central administration is flexible and actually wants to improve the players experience while following specific guild lines to maximize diversity (amongst maps). This definitely has the possibility to positively reflect on how the school is viewed by potential students.

Participanti like all these points a lot. I feel that a variation of rotations would give a nice twist to the game while still making known maps played. In the event that someone recommends a new map into the rotation there is always room for a custom map in the middle of the cycle of amazing maps. All in all, I am all for variations of cycles (go RED!)

ParticipantDeathspirit, cmon, you can’t seriously say that adding a modification to the cs server (a minor one, at that) will affect how potential students view the school. You can’t be serious.
Anyway, I don’t particularly like the ‘rock the vote’ plugin. With the maps set at a good default time, it’s unnecessary. Also too many plugins on a server tend to lag it.
July 6, 2007 at 2:30 pm #23126rossy
Participantrockthevote is stupid. end of story. go play on wc3 nub pubs if u want rockthevote. good day.

ParticipantSource server has an interesting way of doing things, we have a mix of rotation and vote, after a map has been played it wont come back up for vote for the next five or six or seven votes that we have at the beginning. The regulars will be on there for most of the day and because they like the effect of rotating they will progressively choose a different map over the course of the day, no set rotation but it does get the rare maps in at least once a day. Also I don’t think there is anything wrong with clearing the server out every few hours with a lame map, it actually gives people who are waiting in line a chance to get in or to enjoy the low amount of people as some get *edited*ed at getting rocked by 12 man zerg continually without any strats or tactics in play.

ParticipantI actually like the server better when it’s 12-16 people. Thats why I put up the other server that I forgot about. And fyi Mr. never knows what he’s talking about, the total number of maps a map must wait to be replayed is 1/2 the total number of maps. At least half the maps are to be played before a map is eligible to be played again.

Adam FaulknerParticipantwell this topic has got me all washed up. So lets look at the stats!
Our rank in the past has beat out any other servers of our competitors because of the plugins and community that we offer. We did however suffer a loss when we changed the server from 1 server to 2 servers, and i really dont believe that we fulfilled the goal while doing it. We were suppose (My observation) have 1 all custom and 1 all official. Then it cycled into a different Game type servers and then we opened up 2 different threads.
The most popular servers in all the history of gaming servers are the ones that have specific goals .. example (24/7 map servers). The reason for Map Voting and our plugins that were created by Split for AppState, Darktowers and WCU served the purpose of proving the capabilities of offering a flexible way of allowing players to move from map to map. Anyone dare to say that the theory failed needs to look at those 3 servers ranks compared to what they were compared to any of their preprocessors.
However we noticed that some of the same maps were played over and over like de_dust 2. It wasn’t a problem seeing that most people enjoyed it. From the observation of what all of you have said is that you dont mind playing a wild map like awp_map once every 3 weeks, but you do not want to play it no more often than every other week. You are also saying that you do like playing de_dust 2, but the frequency for that map should be around once a day or once every 3 days.
My proposal in the previous threads was to have a mapvote that had built in frequencies for the maps to be played. so basicly writing to a paper that the map was played to day and then when the time comes up for it to be played again it would pick from a pool of maps to populate the vote. If it was not favored (picked in the vote) it would be put back in the pool until it was picked, then rewrote to the paper and pulled out of the pool until it became time to show it again. We may need to setup a survey to setup the frequencies for the maps and then we need to think about map quantities so that we have enough to fit the frequencies so the server plugin will have a pool to pull from (never be empty)
I think this solution is a fix for all your problems, but still allowing all maps found on the server to be played. Like awp_city which i haven’t played in like 2 years!
The system can be integrated without to much headache and a little help from our friend Split, Gxti, and Myself if all are willing to participate. In my opinion it seems flawless and Adam Josey (1.6 Council Leader) seemed to like the idea.
But believe me that I will not go through the trouble of implementing a plugin with this amount of work and effort for it not to be used.
As for rockthevote it was a simple system to allow admin like features to clients for bringing up a vote, and it did just that. It really is a great plugin, but it should only be turned of if the server count is low, and i think those capabilities were ment to be built in, but never progressed.
I hardly ever put that much effort in a post, but i truly think that all of you can agree that it may be a good solution.

ParticipantMap voting sucks. The server is popular as is…why go making drastic changes? Weekly minor rotation changes are a lot more feasible than some crazy plugin that will take a month to write.

Why? Because at the time, most people thought it would be a better solution. Now we’ve had time with the map rotation system and some people find it a good idea to re-evaluate it. The popularity of the server wasn’t part of the debate the 1st time, and it shouldn’t be part of the debate now. It’s not about popularity and how many random people are on at a given time, it’s about player satisfaction (and by that I mean the regulars who play most often).

Adam FaulknerParticipantCameron you are right. We all need to remember that we are here to be better than our competitors. We can not settle for less. Kuros I didn’t expect resistance from you….. You need to evaluate how long the average player is in the server before he or she leaves from being bored. Not how many connections we maintain to the server.

Play a map once per day? With 20 minute map times, that’d require 72 regular maps to fill a day, let alone the custom ones.
The solution being used by the source server seems to be working very well – namely, a random vote that will not display any of the past X maps played, where X is 1/2 or 1/3 of the total maps on the server. This way, people get a choice, but people who have been playing for a few hours don’t get overridden by newcomers who tend to always pick the first thing they recognize (ZOMG DUST2!!!!11one). I never get any complaints about the setup there, except when Kuros forces the nextmap to scoutzknivez.

ParticipantTruthfully the longer you’ve played CS the less big of a deal this issue of maps being played on a rotation becomes. You’re already bored with the game and as long as it isn’t the same map repeatedly you’re good to go.
The most crucial thing is that it is a balanced rotation.
If you plan on creating a bot for voting of some sort go for it and experiment for a little bit, clear the stats and observe. Rock the vote is not that great of an idea in my opinion because it’ll go back to the same 5 maps unless you limit and say the map can’t go back until 5 or 6 more maps afterwards.
Also map voting the way it is right now isn’t going too well. Voting custom/regular. Once it’s on a custom map usually the people will want a custom map again, same goes with regular maps. The only way that I can think of to create a balanced voting system is really ridiculous.
I say ridiculous because I would suggest adding all the maps from your maplist and eliminating all maps that have been played within the last four change ups. All custom/regular maps would appear with a symbol to vote (a, b, c, 1, 2, 3 whatever). But also this could end up getting like 3 votes for a map and it winning because there would be such a large selection.
I would say come up with a list of maps that statistically show in your server a spike of people who join right away (in the beginning, AKA a map that brings people in). Then if you want custom maps add a few that you think may do well but just aren’t played enough because the regular maps in the server are dominant.
Do what you want it’s just a long suggestion that may or may not be organized because I’m just typing and staring at a Foreman Grill.
I’ll just end it with saying that when I ran a server (when people used to play cs) a balanced rotation always worked. I’ll be in IRC if you want to question how stupid this post is.

Participantwhat’s with the foreman grill? my mom gave me one that i’ve been driving around with in my trunk for weeks now. I haven’t thought to take it out and stare at it while i’m on the internets. i might give that a try, see how it goes.
July 10, 2007 at 5:25 pm #23299wispy
Participantwell the maps that bring the most people in are de_dust2 cs_italy cs_office de_inferno scoutknives de_train and de_nuke when you have a rotaion that play a bunch of custom maps in a row like cs_deagle then surviror the sever gets kinda empty you should make a rotation that has a system where these maps are rotated in every other map so say you have thouse 7 maps that are popular put in a diff map inbeteewn if you want but keep the popular maps comming everyother map so people will join. You still get to play custom maps, but the popular maps will keep being played
July 10, 2007 at 5:36 pm #23300wispy
Participanti’m going to further my argument today the map just went from scoutknifes to vertigo the sever went from 25 people to 12 people so i did a votemap and switched to dust2 sever filled back up to 24 then the map switched to train and sever is now filled.
July 10, 2007 at 5:50 pm #23301JackHammer
Participanti agree with wispy the powerhouse maps should be rotated in more often then the other but custum maps are always a good breather between long big maps, they should be like 2 big maps like d2, and inferno then a quick custum, that way the server would fill and during a custum map more ppl would be likely to stay for the next map, that helps keep server filled while also having a good play.

ParticipantAdam, don’t give up! You do a great job. I just don’t want people to forget that they need to have fun(isn’t that why they started playing CS?). Try not to get wrapped up in politics and such. HAVE FUN! Don’t make this a boring and routine job.
