ParticipantThis isn’t Mac Vs. PC, its Mac OS X vs. Windows. Get that straight. You can run both operating systems on both sets of hardware, flawlessly.
Mac is good for some things, such as design, web developement, video editing, basically anything multimedia related mac does better.
Windows is good for games. Which is really all that NEEDS to be said for Windows.
If it means anything, this entire site was designed on the Mac platform. A Macbook Pro to be specific.
November 6, 2007 at 10:03 pm #30354Nickname
ParticipantWindows is the better OS and this is why: it can run on a HUG variety of hardware.
That’s it. There is no more.
Macs aren’t better at multimedia because they run on OSX; they are better because better multimedia software was made for OSX. Windows isn’t just “good for games”, but more games are designed to run on Windows.
There is VERY LITTLE that a Windows PC cannot do, however. It might not be as easy as on a Mac, but it can be done. The fact is that you CAN’T play Crysis on OSX because A) the highend hardware is not supported and
the software is not there.November 6, 2007 at 10:09 pm #30356Bitey
ParticipantPlus I know for a fact that you cannot run OSX flawlessly on just any hardware, trust me I’ve done the research. Also yes OSX has an amazing video editing program called Final Cut which I love and use all the time, however the industry aka Hollywood aka the Movie Making industry quite universally uses a program called Avid which may or may not run on OSX that I am not sure of, but I know that it runs on PCs.

Mac OS X can do that do. Its been able to do that since they started making intel macs. All OSX is is BSD. True unix.

Macs aren’t better at multimedia because they run on OSX; they are better because better multimedia software was made for OSX.And all that good multimedia software was made by who? You guessed it, apple themselves. Final Cut Pro, iLife, Garageband, all of it.

Windows isn’t just “good for games”, but more games are designed to run on Windows. There are programs, that can make games run natively on OSX, without the use of emulation. I run source on my macbook pro, at full video settings.

Research is your friend, don’t debate with a user of both platforms:)
November 7, 2007 at 12:35 pm #30436Nickname
Participanthmmm…. except I was a user of both platforms.
Please though, show me where I can get this mac with an 8800gts. OSX is built on FreeBSD, but that doesn’t make it compatible with everything out there; hence the reason you used to have to buy mac-specific hardware. Ever try using a Lexmark printer with a Mac? Not to mention if it was compatible with everything you could install OSX anywhere you pleased.
PCs can run the 16gb ram and use any type of ddr2 as well; and some can already use ddr3…
Thus none of your arguments really hold except the one that apple makes good software (iLife, FinalCut, etc), which I had already said.
As for your running source on your macbook; that’s great. The problem is that you NEED this 3rd party software to run it! most average joes don’t know how to do all that. Doesn’t say much for a company that says it “just works”
By the way, my research was already done my friend

Participanthmm Why not just use Linux? You can play your windows games (albeit slower) and find plenty of software to do all the tasks you do in Windows/OSX. Personally, I dual boot between Ubuntu (the most popular “flavor” of linux) and Windows. Linux has all the stability and sleekness of OSX and I use windows to play CS. Linux also is free. I would encourage anyone who is contemplating buying a desktop mac (I say a desktop because they are pretty much the same as a windows computer, where as mac laptops are far superior to windows laptops) to look into Ubuntu to start dabbling around with linux. I would also encourage anyone who is even semi computer savvy to look into Ubuntu.
