ParticipantHey all. I currently have a 2.4 ghz box with agp 2x/4x and I was looking to upgrade it. But today I realized just how fast apg 2x/4x cards were being phased out. If anyone has an old box with pci express or agp 4x/8x that they simply don’t use anymore. I may be interested in buying it. I’m looking in the $100 range. Cause. I mean. I can just get a good one for $400.

ParticipantYou’re not going to get anything remotely close to a gaming rig for less than $600, no matter how old it is.

ParticipantI think Xking is asking specifically for the ‘Box’ (in this case probably mobo and maybe case and possibly a card), not the entire rig. Because at 600 dollars you still wouldn’t come close to a real rig.
My below spec PC just cost 600 GPBs/1200 USDs. And thats without British VAT and at some of the lowest prices going at the time.

So yeah it is possible to find good deals you just gotta look around. I find the best sites to look for such a computer to be forums.anandtech.com, hardforum.com, and notebookforum.com, all under the for sale/for trade sections. You will have to dig around in there but there are usually some good deals to be had. Or you could always find the parts to just upgrade what you have; for ~$150 you could probably get a dual core pentium with a pci-express motherboard and maybe a 7600gs or something to that nature.
OR
go on to newegg.com and buy an AGP graphics card if you are tight on cash. More than likely the 4x AGP bus won’t hold you back *too* much. And yes 8x cards SHOULD WORK FINE in a 4x slot.

or if you prefer

ParticipantActually if you would like to upgrade your box, from newegg you can get:
A dual core e2140 (basically a core 2 with less cache) – http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?…N82E16819116037
ASRock 775 Motherboard with PCI Express but still uses your DDR RAM – http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?…N82E16813157114
and an HIS x1650 pro 256mb – http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?…N82E16814161037
for $200.80 shipped – $20 Mail-In-Rebate = $180.80 Shipped to your door (or in your case, the WCU mailroom)
and honestly that was just with a quick search; there are some great deals out there if you look around.

ParticipantI don’t know if you ever watched a show from back in teh glory days of TechTV called The Screen Savers, but they did a segment every so often about a $500 gaming PC. They’d go out to pricewatch.com and such and see what they could put together for under $500, and they’d use whatever monitor and keyboard and mouse they had already. Google $500 gaming PC for some ideas, or try to go it yourself.
And Nickname actually has a darn good looking list to start on, by the way.

ParticipantMy Gaming rig was about under 600$
AMD Dual Core 3800
Asus M2N-MX mATX
2 Gigs of Corsair Value RAM
250 gig Hardrive
and most important of all
Geforce 8800 GTS
I’d say with about $400 you can afford a decent mid range video card (Radeon HD 2600 XT Saphire) on the market along with a PCI-E board, new value RAM and an AMD 3800 Dual Core. The case would have to be Vanilla though, unless you can find something a tad nicer without being pricey.
In fact, let’s go to new egg.
CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16819103747
AMD X2 4200 – $82.50
Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16813131174
M2A-VM – $74.99
RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16820227082
OCZ one gig of RAM, pretty good Price: $51.99
Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16814127300
MSI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256mb – $89.99
That adds up to $299 roughly, leaving a hundred bones for a case, an optical drive and a hardrive, and with the price of this stuff these days, I think you can squeeze it in.
