ParticipantThe founders of wii homebrew have released a Kinect driver for Linux, OSX, and Windows Vista/7. Not much you can do with it ATM but they’ve posted detailed instructions on getting Visual Studio to read it as an input device for programming so expect to see some sweet freeware games in the next year or so.

ParticipantSony has encouraged PS3 users to do the same thing with the move.. I’m not sure what ground has been covered on this front though.

ParticipantConsidering their recent moves against unauthorized use of the PS3 console itself, I find it hard to believe they’d approve of using accessories in this fashion. I would almost think they’d pull an Apple and imbed a virus in their product or something.

ParticipantWell if you think about it.. the Kinect working for PC is another reason to choose XBOX over PS3… so it’s only logical they would try this.

ParticipantGranted, I don’t know why anyone would even bother. The Move is just a Wii clone. The Kinect is a lot nicer piece of hardware.

The move is A LOT better than a Wii clone. Wii only detects motion (orientation too but you have to have it pointed at the sensor bar if you want this to work).. the Move detects orientation and distance along with motion.

ParticipantThis is true. But when the company’s own developers aren’t looking to do a whole lot with the *edited* thing, do you really expect other people to do the same? Besides, it only detects the one point for the move controller and some weak head/shoulder tracking. I’ve had the Move and it was okay. It’s just as gimmicky as the Wii is in terms of entertainment value and I don’t see it providing much more in any other application.

I still can’t fathom why Sony is pushing the Move for FPS games. Nintendo’s been trying to make that work since release day and still hasn’t managed to do it. Does Sony really think they can do any better?

I see your points.. If you would like to use your entire body as a controller, the Kinect appears to be a much better implementation than the Move. I would say if you just wanted to use your hands, the move would be more accurate.
However, to MasterP: I would like to say that the Move with Killzone 3 (FPS) is pretty fun ( I haz the battle rifle or whatever it’s called ). You are right though- because in any competition, the move will just hold you back and take longer to aim.. negating most of it’s value. It’s also really difficult to control player movement.
I plan on buying House of the Dead: Overkill in October and will be a better judge of how well it works as a gun (this game doesn’t require any movement by the player – just aiming so it’s a lot better for any implementation of a light gun)

Bingo. Those are the flaws Nintendo has spent the last 5 years trying to fix.
Fast-paced FPS simply can’t be done with that style of controller. And going from a controller to the Move gun is like going from keyboard/mouse to a controller. You might be ok in single player but you’ll never be able to compete in multiplayer.

ParticipantI’m just more interested in the other applications that the Kinect can offer. I noticed one “hack” where an individual took a Kinect and reproduced a live 3D manipulative reconstruction of a room. However, since he only had 1 input source, it resulted in cardboard reproductions with accurate depth profiling. If he had more, his presentation would’ve been a lot more fascinating. But otherwise, his proof of concept was nice.
