Participantso i was talking to deviantsyntax yesterday and apparently he just upgraded his PC. seems to be pretty pro to me. don’t know exact specs but what I do know is:
amd 1100t 6 core 3.3ghz w/ zalman cooler
16gb crucial dominator ram
2gb radeon 5870
1200W power supply
128gb SSD + 1TB HDD for storage
Antec 900 v2 case
All I know is I am *edited* jealous… that is a hell of a lot of power for a PC (honestly 16gb ram is overkill but he said he got a deal where the price diff from 8 to 16gb was only $20). It kinda gives me the upgrade bug but I have to remember I rarely even use my PC.
Then on the other side of things my friend from work is going to go buy one of the new macbook pros that were just announced yesterday. Say what you want about them, but they are still *edited* nice computers. And here I am with my crappy dell vostro laptop and grrrrr i want new stuff I hate being poor!

He actually wants a Sandy Bridge Mac? And you didn’t tell him all the drawbacks to the CPU?
Bad, Mike. Bad.
And yeah, you’ll never need more than 8GB of ram, 9GB if you’ve got tri-channel. If the price difference was really $20 then yeah why not but I’ve got 8GB and the only time I ever come close is when I’m doing VM testing.

Participantsandy bridge doesnt really have the drawbacks in a laptop… i dont know of anybody who tries to OC a laptop.

ParticipantYeah but Mac pushes the turboboost feature pretty heavily without mentioning the inherent limitations of it. Since OSX now streams across all available cores, turboboost is essentially useless. The only time turboboost helps is when using single-threaded applications.
And I really have a hard time believing that Sandy Bridge is 2x faster than the nehalem series but hey it’s rare that I believe Apple advertising so that’s nothing new <_>
I also find it hard to believe that the ATI 6750M is 3x better than the Nvidia GT 330M but I’m just splitting hairs at this point.

ParticipantI’ve got 12 GB of ram in my desktop at work running Sharepoint Server 2010 (sandboxed). I was only supposed to have 8 GB but they messed up and sent too much so I just stuck it in and didn’t say anything tee hee.
Windows 7 64-bit actually recognizes it too!

ParticipantWell, yeah. Win7 x64 Pro/Ent/Ult have a max of 192GB. Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium have maxes of 2GB, 8GB, and 16GB respectively.
I’m still impressed with Server08 Datacenter, supports CPU and RAM hotswapping. FTW
Don’t get me wrong, Sandy Bridge is a nice logical step in the Core-i series but there’s way too many limitations on old-school use for me to ever consider buying one for myself. In fact, if Intel stays on this path I doubt I’ll be an intel fanboy much longer. Locking the CPU clock with the system bus clock is done for 1 single reason, to prevent overclocking. Unless intel plans on lowering their locked CPUs to match the prices of their AMD equivalents I can’t see them staying in dominance much longer.

Participantwtf… are you serious.. hot swap?
I didn’t think that was possible on ram / cpu
February 26, 2011 at 2:57 pm #107617MasterP
ParticipantOh yeah, the coding and features of MS Server are much better than their client OS’s. For instance, in Enterprise/Datacenter editions the 32bit versions support (and fully utilize) up to 64GB of ram. Server03 Enterprise/Datacenter could also do this. 32bit doesn’t limit you to 4GB, as is the common misconception, it only limits you to 4GB if the OS uses the standard (aka ancient) paging system.
Feature comparison, interesting read.

You will not be disappointed, WD Black is great.

You will most definately be disappointed. I hate my XFX 5770. The card itself is fine and you can get around 10% of stable overclock on it but ATI absolutely sucks at writing drivers. Seriously, I’ve written network adapter drivers that were more stable.
On the whole, you shouldn’t need to upgrade for at least a year. The 5770 is fine for now but it’s going to be the first thing you’re going to want to upgrade. The nVidia lineup keeps getting better and better so hopefully by the time you and me need to upgrade they’ll have another 8800GT-style of epic card available

Participantif it’s in the box then why do they call it black?
Is that a dumb question?

It’s just the series. WD has 5 consumer lines, Black, Blue, Green, RE, and VelociRaptor. All can be quickly identified by sticker colors, the first 3 are obvious and the RE and VR series have yellow stickers.
Black = high performance
Blue = midgrade performance
Green = low performance + powersaving (still very fast in
RE = high performance + high reliability (only series that WD guarantees RAID compatibility)
VR = extreme performance

LOL
That’s how I ended up with one, all the midrange Nvidias were out of stock. Newegg, Tiger, Zipzoom, even checked Amazon.
You know, I’m starting to wonder if people actually buy the 5770 out of desire for one or out of necessity due to weak inventories.

ParticipantI know that the intels are faster in benchmarks.. but lets be honest, who doesnt like the idea of a 6 core 3+ghz amd cpu for ~$200? I know I do, plus AMD doesnt care if you want to overclock (they even make the black editions specifically for that purpose)
I mean I dont know what I would actually do with that much power but that is just me. AMD does a good job staying relevant with amazing price/performance, especially when you consider the platform costs.
I have to agree with you Mitch, IDK if anyone actually gets a 5770 cause they really want one; usually it is just cause the card they really wanted is OOS (when it was new, people wanted the 4870 but got stuck with a 5770 instead, as well).
Also, WD Black drives are the *edited*. Absolutely love mine. I even have the laptop version in my laptop.

I like your argument for the amd 6-cores
