Participantso once we get our servers off tron and its just sitting there i say put like folding@home on it and just let it churn away until IT realizes the server isnt doing anything productive. Hey we aren’t paying for power right?

ParticipantJust setup like any other dedicated server. Just a few server side config differences.

When done correctly Valve doesn’t know you’re doing it. When a complete moron sets it up Valve resets your stats.
Tbh it’s not hard and idk how people keep screwing it up and getting their players’ stats cleared. Like Merrill said, there’s on a slight difference.

ParticipantHow much space is left on the box for tf2?
I would also suggest an arena server.
March 7, 2010 at 11:26 pm #98268AMerrill
Participantif another is made then it should replace the orange server

ParticipantI mean empty servers don’t use anything…
We can try anything you guys want so once the 3 starters are up we’ll put out a call for more ideas.

ParticipantSo whats the point of this? What does it do? Can you provide a link or something so we can read up on this?

ParticipantIn tf2 you receive items (weapons, hats, misc) at random but only while you are in-game. So the longer you play the more items you will get. Since some people do not always have the opportunity to play as much as they want, idling was born. You basically join the idle server and then you are free to leave your computer unattended. This records as playing time with valve and increases your chance of finding items. The server basically has to be setup not to kick afk and you typically use an idling map such as ‘achievement_idle’. Also the chances to find more items is increased the more players you have in the server.
As far as a useful link or something for this, I have yet to come across.

ParticipantI feel like the drop system was changed with the last major update. I thought I read that a maximum of 11 items per week/20 hours is alloted and any extra playing or time would not produce items.
Quote:
Current Item Drop SystemOn April 20, 2010, the item drop system was changed. Instead of rolling randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop, now the system rolls to determine when your next item drop will occur. With this change, players are guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. This was made because many players had unlucky streaks, where they didn’t find any items for weeks. That isn’t possible anymore. The drop rate was also increased, but now players have a limited playtime per week when they can receive drops. Playing beyond that amount won’t find any more items, but some of the unused time will rollover to the following week.
I mean idling still is beneficial I guess except it has diminishing returns when you do playtime vs items.

ParticipantYes you are correct, it was changed but your point is moot.
You still have to have the playing time to get the items, which some people don’t get 20 hours of actual play time per week. So it allows for you to get the max items.

Very true.
I say set one up not matter what. They take energy to leave running on a box even if full. I’ll look around after my final tomorrow and see if I can find some links for setting up the site. I probably won’t idle much considering I play about 2-3 hours a day and it would just hinder my item find to idle, but people are always looking for good idling servers so it will be beneficial.

ParticipantPeople are always looking for a good and dependable idle server and I think it will help bring more players to our tf2 community. Also, I need a good idle server w/ reserved slot access
I would suggest before the idle server is up, to do a makeover on the regular tf2 server. This way if we bring in a good amount of players they will have a decent server to play in while not idling.October 5, 2010 at 11:12 am #105891Lemm
Participantcan we get some reserved slots in the idle server… it’s always full and peeps are on there for 10hr+
I dunno how everyone would feel about it but I wouldn’t mind connecting every once in a while.

ParticipantI had a reserved slot system ready but since it seemed no one else expressed interest in the idle server, I never implemented it. Are others interested in a reserved slot?

I would rather have 2 with reserved slots compared to just 2. Both would be full pretty quickly.
October 5, 2010 at 1:46 pm #105897Lemm
ParticipantYeah I agree… both would fill up quickly..
I’m not sure whether it would be better to have 1 with a lot of reserve slots or two with only a few reserve slots..

given that I have only seen myself and split in there, and with lemm’s interest I would say only 3 reserved slots are needed.
I would like to point out that I do not idle on my main account so I would have to have my other account either added to the file or a separate forum account with it listed there.

ParticipantShould take effect on server restart, however I am not going to manually restart since its full atm.
Major, just list your other steam ids here.
