    Hi guys,

Most of you know me from the counterstrike 1.6 server, but what most of you do not know is that I am a graduate design student. I am currently writing a paper on electronic communication, it can be a any topic of our choice that is in that realm. I have decided to talk about the Steam client that we all use everyday for our gaming needs. I wanted to gain testimony from the users and this is the easiest way I know how to get first hand information.

So, if I could get some of you to be generous enough to spend 10 minutes to write a sentence, a paragraph or whatever to help me gain testimony I would greatly appreciate it. Just reply to this thread. Since all the members have a handle I will not use any real names, just your handle, in a powerpoint presentation that will be displayed to my class only. So I do not think there will be any issues with peoples personal information.

Some questions I had in mind for discussion.

-What are the positive aspects of Steam? Negative?

-How is Steam used for electronic communication?

-How do you like the Steam community? What parts of the community do you like best? Keep in mind this message board and group are directly related to Steam.

Thats about it, pretty simple. If you have anything else to add thats great, Id love to hear your opinion.

Thanks again in advance to anyone who contributes to this thread, Ill keep posting regularly so we can have a great conversation about this topic.

Personally I think that with the last big Steam update, they jumped into electronic communication headfirst with a swan dive. Originally Steam was a program mainly used for finding and connecting to games. Over it’s existance and especially more recently Steam has strived to make communication between it’s clients(bad word choice), more a priority. There is always the personal message to any gamer whose tag you know, and now you can also use voicechat to talk realtime. The community aspect has also been broadened with the new “clubs” and “groups” you can join and belong to through steam. Recieve messages about upcoming events or just use the group to interact with other members. In my opinion, it has made communicating and gaming with friends/associates much simpler and more interactive than the conventional ways of gamespy or others.

    — use what you need feel free to :edit:

As for this website being directly connected to Steam, I don’t agree with that at all. This site was created and is used for gamers to communicate and interact. Much like how steam is used, but this isn’t based off steam or used by steam, or really connected to steam at all. I remember CS before steam quite well, Steam is very new still, comparatively. But yeah, good topic and I wish you the best with it. And please edit any grammatical errors you find before posting this to a crowd. I’ve been working over 100 hours a week for the past 3 weeks so I’m at the end of the wits here and just trying to be a good gamer.

As someone who has been playing cs long before steam was involved, I think it has helped the community grow due to easier access to other players as well as servers. The best thing about steam is that it allowed for easier server filtering and the addition of favorites as well as being able to keep in touch with other players. The negative aspect of steam is that it often has updates and unnecessary messages for games I don’t even have uploaded or have any interest in. From experience I would say their support is quite slow and steam has been known to have alot of connectivity issues. They now have ads in-game in cs 1.6 which is just shameless advertising that takes takes away from the sense of “being in the game.” Steam has however recently expanded their friends system so that groups can be made and can connect people from all over the world who have similar interests. Hope your paper goes well.
