I’m having two problems with Vista, any help with either is greatly appreciated.

    1) In MS Word, it puts symbols that look like backwards P’s after every sentence, and it puts dots instead of spaces. This all started after I copied text from a website and pasted it into Word.

    2) Windows pop up that say “Symantec CMC SmcGui has stopped working”, and if I close the window, it just pops back up again in a few seconds.

    I miss XP.

the word problem isn’t vista. it’s a setting on word. it’s set to show all characters. let me look at it in my word and i’ll edit the post when i figure it out.

edit:okay, go to tools, click on options. under the view tab, there should be a section that says formatting marks. make sure that no boxes are checked under that.

Ok, neither of those problems are Vista’s fault, and you could have easily had the same thing happen in XP.

    1. I will assume you are using office 07 (if not, upgrade). Click on the windows logo in the top left and then choose Word Options (at the bottom of the menu that pops up). Go to “Display” and uncheck everything under “Always show these formatting marks on the screen”.

    2. I am guessing you are using either norton 360 or norton internet security. First, download Symantec Endpoint Protection FREE from WCU (http://www.wcu.edu/10695.asp), it is made by the same company as the norton garbage but never expires and is much less resource intensive. Then, Go to Start -> control panel -> programs & features, find what you are using and uninstall it (you will probably have to restart). Next, Download the norton removal tool here: http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_d4749.html and run it. Then, restart and install Symantec Endpoint Protection you just downloaded, and you should be good to go.

    1) Thanks, that fixes it right up.

    2) No, the only antivirus programs I have are the school provided Symantec and MalwareBytes.

I mean if you bring it to student computing on campus that’s all they are gonna do (trust me, worked there 3 years)

Work is such a strong word…

If you can’t get it fixed after doing Nickname’s steps take it to the CRIB and let them fix it.
