ParticipantThere comes a time in a young man’s life where he goes spelunking in his computer with great intentions and royally *edited*s it all up.
Whilst playing tf2 and other labor intensive games, I noticed that the keyboard and mouse lights would flicker and ultimately die for a good 45 seconds, the computer game would lag, and the computer would kick it into high gear before coming back to life and me being dead with my sentries in pieces.
Now my train of thought was thus: Oh, everything is flickering, then the computer lags, then I die a little inside. That must mean it’s either a) overheating b)faulty connections or c) psu is on the fritz.
So I first checked the connections in the back and checked to see if I was not running 1000 things in the background. After fiddling and closing crap I tried the game again and within 5 minutes of me starting the game. Kaput, the keyboard and everything cried and went home to mama.
Next I opened it up and notices, wow, there is a small creature living in my tower: aka it was dusty. (Been around 6 months since i took it apart for a good cleaning. As I was cleaning it, I took the fan off the CPU to air it off and when I went to put it back, it failed attach again. The mechanics of the fan are still working, and the holes are still there for me to put it in, and yet, it seems my CPU grew about 1/4 of a inch while I was cleaning so now the fan won’t reach the holes. (inb4 masterp saying “inb4 user error”)
So for now, I am just going to attach it the best I can and pray it doesn’t fall off. I still think that I have an overall issue with the keyboard and mouse dying. In retrospect while writing this I realize that my mouse is connected to my keyboard so it may just be a keyboard fail. GREAT lost post for fun.
If I find the keyboard to work fine, I am still in search of suggestions. Let me know.

We need the CPU socket/type, motherboard make/model, and fan make/model. If the fan is stock (came with the cpu please say so)

Intel q9300 2.5 quad – with stock fan
ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 – mobo
I did some *edited*ing around. The keyboard is drawing some unholy amounts of power to the point where when I plug a USB f;ash drive into I get a “DONT DO THAT WE CANNOT POWER IT” message. Do I just have to many things plugged into the *edited* of this comp?
-mouse
-g11 keyboard
-external HD
-zune mount (sans zune)
and thats it.
PSU on fritz and cannot support everything?

ParticipantUSB devices are limited to .5A, no more.

Participantgood luck man… I messed up my box a while back when i went in to dust stuff off.. I’ve been playing on a laptop ever since
my psu was going bad and i went to cleam out my gpu… I got it nice and clean but i must have shorted it cus the video never worked again.. the other components were too old to just buy a new gpu .. it wasn’t worth salvaging (plus i’d need another psu as well)

ParticipantCan you post a pic of the fan’s socket being the wrong size for the board?

Gosh I have no clue how I would begin to picture that. The discernible difference is so small and awkwardly placed in the machine, I would need one of the cameras used for looking in your stomach in surgery. I ended up getting one side of the fan fastened securely and as of now it is working. I’m afraid, though, that without it being reset properly, I will be exploding my CPU.
When you said they are limited to 0.5A no more, would plugging in a mouse to the USB port cause it to stall the entire computer like that? I understand that it was not getting sufficient power, but still that reaction seems very severe to what a tiny action was made.

ParticipantNo single USB device can cause such a disruption that it affects the rest of the machine.
Also, make sure that all the clamps are DISENGAGED before you try putting it on, that sounds like what the problem is. The newer intel fans can be hard to figure out if you haven’t done it before.

Participanti second that… fans are spectacularly complicated sometimes… if it has the push-in screws you gotta push before they’ll catch and you can actually screw ’em in, or if it has a metal clamp across the middle those are general pains in the arse. generally speaking, while still doing it by hand, it may take a fair amount of force to get the fan back in. that said, use of a crowbar is unnecessary and highly discouraged.

ParticipantThe core2 and core i series intel fans are not hard to get on. If you think you’re using too much force you probably are.
