ParticipantSo, ive done some reading about how it would be better if i get an hd tv and hook it up as a moniter, but then i read that that is a hassle and too expensive…. but i need a tv for the fall and i need a monitor in the fall so what should i do
get a cheap monitor and a old *edited* tv?

Participantjust do it…spend the money for a quality tv to use it as a monitor.

ParticipantUsing a TV as a monitor is overkill. Get a decent 19-22″ monitor and spend the rest on a smaller sized LCD TV. You might even look into getting a tuner card.

Participantyeah the TV as a monitor is never all its cracked up to be anyways… you would be running a what 37+” screen at only 1920×1080? the size of the pixels is obnoxious if you are trying to use it for everyday work (i.e. word processing). I agree with masterp, get a 20-22″ LCD monitor then use what money you have left for a TV.

ParticipantKaren and I have our 40in Samsung hooked up at 1920×1080 to the media center pc and it looks pretty frakking amazing actually. I can read text and even surf the internet from the couch which is about 7-8 ft away. At 1080p resolution (native to the TV, hello?) the pixels are exactly the right size. I’m using a dvi-hdmi converter. While I agree that it’s overkill and I don’t use it for gaming or word processing, it’s only because it won’t fit on my desk
. I’ve thought about dragging my pc over to the tv several times (Karen will kill because of the mess). The only problem that I could see Major having is his graphics card not being able to push 1080p at any kind of decent frame rate in games. That is a metric *edited*ton of pixels to push for a midrange graphics card. Hell, that’s a metric *edited*ton of pixels to push for a high end graphics card…August 1, 2008 at 11:26 am #52970Nickname

I guess it comes down to what you have room to do.
Also nice to see you again Kuros.

Participantroom is a poroblem that i have…. im moving into a new apt on the 4th and the room i will be in i think is slightly smaller than what i have now. unless i mount a tv up high on the wall i really thought that having one would be a better option… but heres what im gonna do:
i just found out a freind of mine is selling her tv but its one of those old boxey tube ones for 20 dollars…. so im considering that even tho i had my hopes on a nice flat screen
and as for the monitor what brand do u guys recommend? i;ve been using planer and acer but i got yelled at by nickname for that

Participantwell its hard to argue against samsung…
I have a benq that I like and hanns-g is typically pretty decent as well.

ParticipantSamsung is the best LCD maker right now for both monitors and tvs. They’re your best bet.
I’ve used Viewsonic for years and haven’t had a single one die on me yet so you can also look at them. They aren’t as good as Samsung though.

Participantyeah it basically worsk out to Samsung is the best then there are a few decent ones (Hanns-G, BenQ, Viewsonic, LG) then the rest are about 50/50 chance if you actually get a good working panel from them. I mean you could get lucky and get a good Acer or it might come with dead pixels, terrible light bleeding, poor color reproduction, and a fuzzy picture. I would say its probably a 95% chance of getting a good Samsung, 80% chance of getting a good Hanns-G, BenQ, Viewsonic, LG, and 50% chance of getting a good something else. Even if you do get a working “other brand” the picture is rarely as clear as a Samsung.

ParticipantThat math works out.
The key is how much faith you have in getting an LCD with no dead pixels or manufacturing defects (not the same thing apparently, idk why). I have yet to see or hear of Samsung’s having dead pixels and out of 3 Viewsonics I’ve had 1 dead pixel (top right where the red X is anyway) and 2 lazy pixels. Read reviews and see the failure rate before you buy but definately go by Nickname’s list.

Participantforgot to mention, Dell makes pretty good LCDs as well (of course their panels are all made by Samsung and LG

ParticipantLooks like i should apply to some of these Companies. I’m looking to get a job in product & process engineering. looks like they could all use some quality assurance.

ParticipantGet a 19-22 inch Samsung and you are good to go. Just about everyone at the LANs loves my 22 in Samsung widescreen. No dead pixels here on the 1.7 million it has.

Planar makes the best selling “high end” LCD TV. Even though their monitors aren’t great Ive installed several Planar sets and they are amazing. Although they aren’t exactly the kind you pick up at best buy either (there is a large difference in picture and construction quality in them). The cheapest one I’ve installed was $$$ http://www.vidikron.com/vl-57.html …People in Highlands have too much money.Contrast Ratio:

LOL. Rich people. I wonder if they all call each other or get together at group therapy to decide what they are going to make trendy next in Highlands.
