Oh Malley
ParticipantOkay, so I want general input on this question from the console community.
If we do teams, they will be randomized.
Please state your vote and reasons why.

ParticipantI voted 2V2. It worked very well at the last LAN. It geneally gives novices more of a chance. Some experts might find this annoying, but I say its more inclusive. Plus, having teams is a fun change of pace from free-for-all. There is more strategy involved.
February 28, 2008 at 4:33 pm #38615TrebuShae
ParticipantI chose 3v3/4v4 because I can definitely see why ffa wouldn’t be any fun for novices. I can just see it now, all of the map exploits and people racing to get the best hiding spot. Well… that’s what I would be doing anyways.
Teams are fun. 2v2 is okay but it can sometimes cause problems, especially if that one person you practiced with decides to NOT SHOW UP. Bigger teams can also bring more players together overall and not leave one person doing all the work (if your partner happens to be not so good at Halo).

ParticipantI think it kinda relies on how many people you have registered for the tournament, you would get the tournament done faster if it were 3v3/4v4, opening up other possibilities my input doesn’t really matter though since I don’t usually play in the Halo tourney.
February 28, 2008 at 6:06 pm #38633MasterP
ParticipantNot sure how it works in consoles but in PCs, large team-based tournaments aren’t any fun unless you know the people you’re playing with. Keep the teams at 2v2, it makes it much easier for random people to learn to play with each other.
You might try having a team-based tournament AND a free-for-all tournament. That way you let the small-team loving people have it their way and the people who didn’t bring buddies have it their way. Both could occur at the same time if you limit registration to one or the other and it really doesn’t tie up any additional resources since the people were going to play in a Halo 3 tournament anyway.

Actually, it ties up more if they’re run concurrently. We have limited copies of Halo 3, Xbox 360s, and TVs. We don’t have the luxury of each person having their own gaming machine.
I leave it up to the community to organize its own freeplay if they want to do a mini free for all tournament or team games afterward.

ParticipantOne good thing about 3v3 or 4v4 is that there is that it isn’t likely that only one person has any idea what is going on. In 2v2, a good player can be tripped up by a novice partner. Still, I think there could be problems with groups as big as three or four. What if some people don’t show up and you have to get together three new people to join a registered player with no partners? This isn’t an issue for a group with a small, even number of members like two.

ParticipantLike I said…teams will be randomized. Meaning they will be drafted directly before the tournament begins.
February 29, 2008 at 12:56 am #38680Cacophony
ParticipantTo avoid the problem Ephraim mentioned you could re-take attendance at the LAN and form teams through that. I think 3v3 or 4v4 is a fun idea though.

You’d still have the same number of people playing concurrently, it would just be split between 2 brackets. Depending on how you plan it, something like this would be very do-able.

We don’t have the luxury of each person having their own gaming machine. Is this even necessary? You’ve posted this several times at it’s annoying as hell. While it is true that some Halo3 players won’t have an XBOX360, I think it’s a fair assumption that a majority have their own XBOX360s and, if asked, could bring it. Also keep in mind that console gaming is cheap compared to PC gaming. For the same price as my computer I could have bought six XBOX360s. It not like it’s a tremendous burden to buy one so please stop making it out as though it is.

ParticipantSame reasons as CoD4.
February 29, 2008 at 3:50 am #38696tyr
Participantwell I voted for 3v3/4v4. Makes the tourneys go by faster and hell I say let the team size be whatever the team chooses. Like yeah there is power in numbers but… I personally have with one other person taken down a team of 5. (ppl dropped out of the game leaving me and this other person) And we won. So i mean. Ppl like Oh Malley could take down a 3 person team no problem. Hell he took me and Chaoswolf down like that quite a few times…
February 29, 2008 at 4:03 am #38697Bitey
ParticipantMasterP I don’t have enough money to afford an XBOX 360 right now, I may have before I got my computer but we are not talking about the past we are talking about now, most college students are more worried about food, rent, or gas money than they are an XBOX 360 to say that it is easy to just go out and buy one is a bit pompous, don’t be so hasty to think everyone has money just laying around to spend, I don’t know if that is what you meant by what you said but that is how it came across to me, so please clarify or don’t make assumptions like that.

You missed the entire point of that post if you got that message out of it.

Okay, so I want general input on this question from the console community.it appears you’ve misinterpreted mine completely.
Secondly,
not everyone brings their consoles OR their TVs even if you ask them. And there’s a good portion of people who play on their friend’s/roommates 360’s. So I’d probably say less than a majority have an available 360
And it does tie up additional resources. To pull off a decent FFA round, you need about 6-8 people, therefore that’s 3-4 TVs being split screen since everyone knows how ridiculous it is to do a 4 person split screen on TV’s smaller than the 26 inch range. So, for those FFA rounds, that’s AT LEAST 3 consoles, and 3 TVs. For a 3v3/4v4, it would take 1-2 TVs, and 1-2 consoles. So that’s a grand total of 4-6 consoles and 4-6 TVs which we don’t even have right now. Yes we’ve had that many before, BUT generally 1 or 2 consoles ends up as a free play consoles as well as the TVs. We’re trying to limit the number of tournaments by the way. If you were a part of the console community and attended the meetings, you would’ve known that. But since you are NOT part of the community NOR attend either of the console meetings, you obviously don’t.

ParticipantAnd it’s that type of attitude that made me leave the console community. That post was better before you editted it and put in the flames.

I’m willing to bet if you asked EVERYONE that played XBOX360 at the last few LANs you’d find at least 10-15 people that would be willing to bring one and a TV if given a guarantee that their gear would be well taken care of. Hell I’d bring my Wii and TV for you to use if there wasn’t so much horseplay in the console area.
Since I’m not part of the “console community” (dispite the fact I played console tournaments that didn’t interfere with prime PCs earlier in the school year) I’ll leave you and your “community” to figure that math out for yourself.

ParticipantThis entire situation is rediculous. Oh Malley does a good job with what he does and is striving to bring the console community together. If you cant be constructive or beneficial then don’t bother posting. (This is aimed at everyone, not anyone in particular.)
This entire thread got derailed and it seems to happen a lot here, mostly by a few people. This is a club and a community and the club members should all work together to achieve the goal of the club, which is to attract new members to WCU, not snipe at each other.

ParticipantJust because its faster, 2v2 would be the best. I could see problems with the 3v3, 4v4 by not having enough people for even teams.

ParticipantHey Idk if you guys remember me but i came to the Halo 3 tourney this past year. I would love a bigger tourney like 4v4 or 3v3 but in finding teamates 2v2 would be the easiest so thats what i voted for. Its just easier finding one other person to come than 2 or 3 more u know. I am now attending WCU and was wondering when i would be able to join the club and if possible if i could head up the next halo tourney. I have alot of MLG experience (5 times, making pro twice) and local tourney experience. Im very excited to be apart of the club!
July 1, 2008 at 4:25 am #50137Cacophony
ParticipantJust come to the meetings. That’s how you join!
As for running the tourney, that falls to the officer in charge. In the case of the last LAN, me. Though help from the participants was most appreciated and vital to the success of the tourney I think.
July 1, 2008 at 3:42 pm #50149ExiLe
Participantwhen will the first meeting be?
July 1, 2008 at 3:48 pm #50152Cacophony
ParticipantI doubt we’ll know until the beginning of the school year. Stick around the forums and you’ll know when everyone else does.
July 1, 2008 at 5:31 pm #50157Oh Malley
ParticipantAnd technically you don’t even have to really go to a meeting to join the club. We’ve got a lot of regulars that play on our PC servers that are considered club members and yet aren’t even at WCU.
So, welcome aboard. Feel free to send me a Live friend request – XBL GT: tF Audyo.

This way you can be more active in making decisions and be more involved in the club overall.

ParticipantPrecisely. But just claiming that it’s not the meetings that make you a member. It’s participating in the community that counts. Going to the meetings let you play a greater impact since you actually get a say in how the club is run, how LANs are set up, and the like.
July 21, 2008 at 11:12 am #51933Akuzan
ParticipantExile you should go to the meetings and get involved if you want it to be “mlg esque”. I never went to any of the meetings because about maybe 10 people came to the halo tounaments when I first started them but since then it has grown. Well to whoever is running it , “Do work son!”. Also Exile is my partner lol.

ParticipantI like 3v3/4v4 more than anything. With doubles one player can carry the team and the other guy really doesn’t improve much, or learn from the experience at all, where as with a 4v4 or 3v3 type of format it requires a more team effort than anything else, and on top of that there is a lot more room for newer, less experienced players to learn from the better ones and improve. All of this is from my experience of course, back when we had our huge H2 tourney up in Reynolds my Freshman year, when the console community was huge, do to an open LAN, which no longer exists from what I’ve heard.
