    I’m just curious about everyone’s graphic cards…

Please post, I haven’t seen a 8800GTX yet… and that would really surprise me if someone did…

Starting playing CS:S again when I got the last upgrade for my AGP-based system, the X1950XT. Playing 1680×1050 on an X850XT PE didn’t give me acceptable frame rates. I was/am locked into AGP because I have the Athlon FX-51 (bought it when it was first available at $1000 bucks for the processor) and 2GB REGISTERED RAM (screw you early FX-51).

Upgrading my system to my satisfaction will run between $3200 and $4400, and I have other places to spend that money right now.

LOL, i feel sorry for you blu3…

AGP (8x) is old school now…

You can upgrade your mobo (depending on your socket) for about 100 bucks and get an PCI-e slot (16x)

You do know that ‘registered’ memory is only truly useful for servers, right? Same goes for ‘ecc’ vs ‘non-ecc’. :)

    1. The Athlon FX-51 required registered memory.

    2. No manufacturer currently makes a motherboard that supports my processor.

nothing like going to the site of the manufactor of your graphics card for drivers and find out they don’t support your card any more… those rat *edited*s…

I thought nvidia and ati were using a “generic” driver now for each series of their cards? You could also ‘yahoo’ it. I found some great ati mobile and geforce go drivers online that are better than the manufacturer’s have released.

Yes, the drivers from nvidia.com or ati.com will work for any card, and there are plenty of third party drivers that also work. Manufacturer’s drivers are worthless.

Umm.. FX-51 uses ECC memory but unbuffered

FX-51 uses the Socket 940, which are expensive alright but here’s a couple you might be interested in:

Theoretically speaking, all these mobos should support your processor and they all have PCI-e x16.

There are some dual Opteron motherboards available through Newegg, but for $260+ I would have doubled the cost of the upgrade. The X1950XT (AGP variety) gives about the performance I’d get from the card if it was PCI-e; anything faster may be bottlenecked by the processor.

My next upgrade will be significant, and that’s why it will be expensive. For now the X1950XT works well enough at 1680×1050.

I’m running an x800XL PCIe right now, but my new system is going to have a 8800GTX in it, seeing how they’re only $350 or so. Once Intel drops its prices on the 22nd of July I’ll make a decision on either the e6700 or whether I’ll go AMD. So far though, Intel it will be once more:

And with the new P35 chipset coming out from Intel, it’ll only be better:

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showd…?i=2995&p=2

But if the prices on the Intels drop enough I may even try to sneak in some SLi on the 8800GTX, just depends on budget.

ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 in a dell inspiron 600m. *edited*ty for sure, but more than good enough to run 1.6 at 100+ fps, and that’s all that matters.

Still don’t see any Opterons. Opterons will beat your Intel *edited* *edited* back to pansy land.

What makes these Opterons better than the Intel’s he’s using? (Genuine curiosity here.)

    #22406

Kuros, you’re comparing a server CPU to a desktop CPU. Your Opteron would fail at gaming.

Opteron IS NOT supposed to be “better” than Athlon 64. Opteron is targeted to network servers and thus to a complete different market in mind. They can have two features not present on Athlon 64:

    – Virtualization technology

    – Memory controller supporting ECC memories, which provide error correction capability – a feature desirable to have on servers (in fact ECC memories are slower than regular memories due to this feature).

Regarding the difference on HT bus, this is also a problem, because the same thing can have different names. To summarize:

    800 MHz HT = “1,600 MHz” HT = 3,200 MB/s HT

    1,000 MHz HT = “2,000 MHz” HT = 4,000 MB/s HT

In this context 1,000 MHz and 2,000 MHz are the same thing. A detailed explanation is given on this tutorial:

    http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/19

So the difference between the two CPUs is that Opteron has virtualization technology and supports ECC memories while Athlon 64 doesn’t. All the other specs are just the same.

Here’s also a funny fact, the specs on the Opteron 1220 that you linked in IRC and then the Athlon 64 x2 6000+ ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. Well, except for 200mhz more on the 6000+, but who cares about that. Either way, I’ll then bring your attention back to here and say, good game fanboy.

    Fact, as of right now:

INTEL HAS BETTER PERFORMANCE IN GAMING AND MOST OTHER DEPARTMENTS THAN AMD.

    Good game AMD fanboys.
