ParticipantFirst off. I apologize in advance but this is going to be long
So i’ve been analyzing the situation, granted from the limited, member point of view, and I think i’ve reached a conclusion that separation is not only inevitable but necessary. However, the reasons for it may be far simpler than many people want to admit. This reason is the everlasting feud between PC and console gamers.
This is not something exclusive to this club by any means. It is almost a fact of life that if you put a PC gamer and a console gamer in the same room together. By the end of the day someone is either going to have their head bashed in with a desktop or have been strangled by a controller cord (maybe not so much today with all the wireless controllers so lets just say a wii-nunchuck).
From what i’ve gathered by observation and talking to people. this event actually closely resembles when the Irish came to America. And then more came, and then more, and then they wanted an equal voice to the “native” born. Anyone who has taken a decent history course should know where this leads. The club started by PC players but it has grown thanks to the console players and now they want an equal voice in decisions. Many of the original and remaining PC members however do not want the club to loose its roots.
Perhaps it would be best if the two factions split into separate entities and became partners in gaming rather than rivals. This would also ease the situation on anyone wanting to remain neutral in this debate. One group would continue to remain PC based while the other would become more console oriented. Not saying these should be exclusive dispositions but rather areas of specialty. This would also allow for a lot more tournaments if each side stayed freeplay on its non-specialization allowing more tournaments per medium while maintaining a manageable prize selection. As long as the clubs events do not overlap there should not be conflicts. Many people would undoubtedly attend both events.
The only real flaw that i can see in my analysis is the 360 players views on the situations. They seem abnormally hard to get an idea of where they stand in this. Anyway, just some ideas for people to think about it.

ParticipantI think this just fuels the stereotype that Console and PC gamers cannot get along. Nearly half the PC gamers I know either personally or online own their own consoles and play time evenly between them. Now I do agree that there are some bravado players on both sides who hold strict views on which method of gaming is superior, but the majority of the people in the world and the people in the club could care less what is “better” and what is “worse”. Many of the people on the “console side” of the club frequent the PC games in tournaments and vice-versa. Watering this down into black and white is not the correct method to solving the issue at hand.
I do however feel the club has fostered an environment where the two as seen butting heads rather than in cooperation. I would even go as far to say that designating a separate Console VP and PC VP was detrimental to the club spurring more resentment and segregation between the two. The separation you are calling for has been tried with the split of the two jobs, and making them two separate entities will not and did not solve the issue. Instead of collaboration, you will get competing between the two clubs making a detrimental dilemma for the people just going to LANs, the regular members, and the commuters and alumni.
Instead of this separationist idea, perhaps a joining of halves creating a unified club, with shared roles and a strict leadership hierarchy. As the club stands now, with the constitution being rewritten and people being ousted, there is a barrier created between the halves that has been there since 2008. I honestly think that with a new constitution, the reinstatement of some of the executives and a general meeting to discuss the future of the club is needed for any resolution to start. I say we remove the Positions of Console VP and PC VP and revert back to the all encompassing VP position. There are people in the club, new and old, who still do not see the reason for the competition between the two groups and the leadership should represent this unbiased view. The leaders cannot be considered from the “console side” of the club no more should they identify with the “PC side” of the club. There should be no sides in this.
There is no superiority between the gaming mediums and any ideas showing that should not be represented in the club.

ParticipantMost people that come to the LANs don’t give 2 *edited*s about consoles vs PC wars within the club. They just want to play games. It’s not that hard to have them both. I did it peacefully for nearly 2 years.

Both sides got along just fine for years and could very easily do so again.

ParticipantI agree and the idea behind making the two VP positions was to allow someone who knew more about the other side to take the wheel. I was biased and didn’t want to be able to have that control, I put the power in the players hands instead of dictating how it should be in my opinion, call it wrong or right if you want, but the idea was not PC and console side of the club. Just a person that didn’t want to look like a dictator and do all the work by himself.

ParticipantI get the feeling that OP’s suggestion wouldn’t fly with SGA.

Apparently you didn’t fully read the topic which granted it was long so i guess is forgivable. Perhaps i should be more clear that when i say many people would attend both events i am of course referring to those who can exist between the lines. Second I only count about 16-20 consoles total and since there usually seems to be around 60-90 people that doesn’t really count as most. In fact it seems most people don’t.
I believe i also mentioned that these events shouldn’t force exclusion just specialty. It’s like having a MTG and warhammer tournament in the same location at the same time with limited judges. The two just seem to get in each others way from where i am sitting. I seem to be the only one on this discussion who can’t see the private forums so I don’t know what is being talked about there. As such i’m just putting some ideas out there that may not have been brought up. Or maybe they have and i’m just fancying myself being involved.
I was actually hoping more normal members would get involved in this discussion so that execs and advisers could see what the members think and get a broader view, but unfortunately i’m not seeing very many active at all.

In general this is one of the biggest problems in the club, not enough people wanting to do anything with the club.

Nothing’s getting discussed there. The only people who’ve taken an active part are Liquid and Josrocket, and all Josh did was troll the entire thread with racist and sexist remarks trying to get a nonstudent to ban him so he’d get the club in trouble.

Now you see our problem. If members don’t tell us we have a problem how are we supposed to know it exists?
When a handful of people show up here and post end of the world scenarios and preach that our decisions are terrible because of X reasoning, it’s hard for us to take them seriously when no one else cares enough to post in support of those statements. This is why we’re in the situation we’re in, half the EXECS weren’t active here and didn’t care enough to post when there were problems so no one else knew there were problems except those who hang in the commuter lounge, a small percentage of our overall population.

Participanti may be reaching out on a limb here, but why is it so difficult for the loungers to put the magic cards down just for a second, hop online via laptop or iphone, and read/comment in the forums?? It took me less than 5 minutes to read and respond.

It’s not ability, it’s desire.

ParticipantThe forums were here before them… the forums were here before me. Aside from the members, the forums are the club in my opinion.
I also think this thread is pointless. There is a clear separation between consoles and PC within the club already. There is no reason to separate it any further unless someone is thirsty for more power.

ParticipantI game on both PC and Console. A PC is REQUIRED to be a student here thus being bias towards something EVERYONE owns is ridiculous. Owning a console on the other hand is an option and is for pure desire to play CONSOLE games. The fact of the matter is at the LANs people play what they want, and in most cases there is a bias as to what certain individuals want to play GAME wise, or platform wise. Everyone has their preferences, but for the most part we ALL get along and associate with one another. LANs are for games and having fun with like minded individuals. Why must everything be an argument or a desire to stir more drama? Lets get back to enjoying the games, running this Club and Community of gamers as stated by the constitution, and FFS quit with these essentially pointless threads.

Participantall discussion on the WCUGA and the constitution is to cease until further notice. this is handed down by the SGA ICC
