ParticipantAbsolute horse *edited*…it just shows how Wimbledon has changed for the worse when a serve and volleyer does not win, not that Fed is a S+V, and that a clay court baseline *edited* wins it…But Rafa did play great…

Participantmajin is being mean
you should be ashamed of yourself yahoo
that was one of the greatest matches in history
better than the agassi’s last match in the us open
well its been awhile since an extreme clay player did well in wimbledon let alone win the championship
its so fun watching nadal swing the balls back with incredible spin. ITS LIKE IS THAT *edited*ING POSSIBLE

Yes but that is not the point…Wimbledon has lost almost everything it used to have. The speed of the courts, the worn down net areas. The classic serve and volley’ers charging and making it deep in the tourney. If I want to see someone sit at the baseline and ralley for 20+ ball rallies, I can go watch the Aussie and the French open.
You can see the change in the courts if you go and look at a wimby court in the finals from 5,6,7+ years ago, the grass around the net is brown, and the baseline grass is still slightly green. Now the lower courts are the ones with the worn down net areas because the doubles hardly get to play on the center courts until deeper in the the tourney. Now this isn’t Rafa’s fault, this is just the evolution of tennis, sort of. With the new technology, rackets and strings make players hit the ball harder, and with more spin, it is getting harder for a S+V’er to make it in todays game.
And I never said it was not a great match, just not one of the best Wimby matches of all time…I have seen better 1-4th round matches in the past that put that match to shame. Any early match with Pat Rafter, Goran, Pete, even Bjorkman are funner for me to watch. That is what used to make Wimby special, I didn’t have to watch 4 grandslams of people sitting back and just out rallying, or out angling people…

Participant*edited* people getting philosophical about Tennis lol.
July 7, 2008 at 5:18 pm #50593pyro urban
Participantyea really now lol. all sports are changing with the newer technology. ofcourse people can swim faster with water dynamic no frictin swim suits. or stronger bats. more grips on the basketballs. more aerodynamic footballs. not that hard to break records with new technologies
July 7, 2008 at 8:31 pm #50613Poopie
Participanthaving new techonolgy would only ruin the sports.
its putting all the older generation athletes at a disadvantage.
such as bjorn borg getting his records beaten by nadal and federer.
i feel bad for borg.

Participantyea but nothing you can do about it

ParticipantBut technology is not changing the way baseball is played, people still pitch, and hit, and they hit a few more homeruns every now and then, but it is still essentially the same game. Same with Football, people still run around and tackle, carry the ball, and pass the ball…And with basketball it is not technology, you could almost blame it on Jordan setting the bar so high for the future, that kids/men train that much harder to be like him and it makes everyone better eventually. Although you could argue that basketball has changed in the fact that there are much more dunks than layups from the 60’s, but that doesn’t change the game.
And about the records, if there were no records, or once one person got a record, what would the point in playing so hard for so long be if there was no way to break them…and isn’t the saying, “records are meant to be broken…” or something along those lines. And if you ask those guys how they feel, they do not mind, take Pete Sampras for example, arguably the best player to play the game at this point in time(maybe second best), but he has the most grand slams. When asked about how he feels to have Roger Federer almost guaranteed to break and shatter his grandslam record he just shruggs it off and says oh well, if someone of his calibre is going to take my record, so be it, he will be the greatest player to play the game.
And onto the philosophical part…I just do not enjoy people arguing about tennis when they do not know squat about what they are talking about(no offense to anyone here)…Especially when it is a top 3 sport in the WORLD, yet it is not even a top 10 sport in the U.S.
: )
I guess what I am trying to say is, go NOVAK, and go MARAT(don’t get mad)!!!

Participanthey i do know tennis thank you very much
technology maybe not be changing the sports you mentioned yahoo because they are do not rely solely on the technology itself.
for example in golf. golf clubs are being advanced so much that all most holes are being stretched(distance increased) fields because of the clubs ability to whack the ball really long distances. when swinging golf clubs its about the momentum and angle not strength so technology does play a big part in golf. jack nicholas a legendary golfer criticized this and so have other golfers as well.
