I had forgotten what this game was, I actually love this game, I played it back in the day and it is actually a lot of fun, similar to worms, but you only get one guy.

I would hope more considering the number of *GOOD* games that got bumped for it. Plus if it’s unplayed it would give the impression that console players were trying to sabotage the PC side of the club as they were the only ones who voted for it…

The thing is, now that it isn’t scheduled alongside a tourney most of us would play on the console side, I would seriously play this game. And God forbid you guys do something different for a change. Besides, this game is easy, fun and free. No worries about people not being able to get it or whatever. It’s a quick easy install and easy to pick up and play. Yes we’re proving a point, but we might as well try and have our fun doing it too.

srly,, we need to get out of this rutt! 100% the same as last lan as far as PC games being played.. the boringness is turning me away as dedicated as i am. back to back lan the same = fail

I’ve been one of the few behind the scenes pushing for change to come about. Our on-campus presence is somewhat mediocre. Yes we draw a lot of people to the LANs, but look at our meetings. We’ll have 30 show up to the first and then ~10 for the rest of them. I kinda threw up one of my big ideas towards the end (though I doubt it got noticed) about having alternating free-play and competitive LANs. I know I’ve talked to Bitey and Mouchet about it in detail and a few others in my circle, but that’s about it.

How many LANs in a row have you played Halo3 and Guitar Hero? The only tournaments that have remained constant for PCs in the past year is CSS and TF2. Are we supposed to change them even if they’re successful?

Actually, Guitar Hero hasn’t been in every LAN since we started it. Also, Guitar Hero is the only console tournament to ever get sponsored. And my point isn’t that we seemingly vote different games for each LAN, is that we constantly try to bring up new games EVERY meeting to try out. Your last “new” game to get introduced to the list was Call of Duty 4. PC plays mostly FPS’s. I don’t understand why there can’t be an RTS, some sort of fighter, a strategy game, a puzzle game, or whatever new for the PC list. All I’ve seen for the PC list are the same games just recycled over and over. Day of Defeat, UT2K4, Quake 3, Call of Duty 4, CSS, CS 1.6, and TF2. There was ONE Starcraft tournament and that was because a CONSOLE person pushed for it and ran it.

There’s an easy explanation why the console community has grown so much faster than the PC side.

We have tried RTS ever since I’ve been in the club and it never works. There’s always one or two REALLY good people and it’s a major turn off to everyone else. For example, the Starcraft you refer to was won by the guy who ran it and when it was played at the following LAN it had like 4 people play. We can’t be expected to stick with tournaments that fail.

There aren’t any good fighter or puzzle games for PC. Unlike the consoles, they don’t release a zillion games per year for PC, we get maybe 3 good games per year and out of those maybe 1 is decent enough for tournament play, maybe. Then everyone who plays it has to have their own copy, instead of getting 4 players for a single $50 purchase.

Btw, if you know of any *good* fighting games for PC feel free to let us know. I can’t think of a single one since they quit making Mortal Combats for the PC.

Because consoles are 1/4 the price and the university pushes freshmen parents hard to get university backed PCs that can’t play games. Also, remember we were here before you were and were hovering around a peak about the time consoles started so comparisons of growth speed isn’t really that fair.

Isn’t that true for virtually every game that’s played? The same 3 or 4 respective people win the same tournament each LAN. Especially with Chupathingy and Call of Duty 4, but you’re playing that again. Furthermore, that’s the same reason why you kept UT2K4 off the books for so long, but you’re allowing it back. Trying another RTS would not hurt.

There are other alternatives than the big games released by major developers that have opportunities. 1) Play older games. They’re still fun and bring back good memories. Besides, I thought you guys were about fun. 2) Play some of the free stuff that’s out there. Gunbound is a good game and fun game. Again, I thought we were aiming for fun, not competition here. At least that’s what nearly every naysayer I’ve had come to me about pushing for more competitive based rules and settings has been telling me. 3) Again, trying 1 new game or mod will mix things up.

Furthermore, the consoles may be able to have cost distributed out better but at the same time we are limited by equipment just as you guys are. Call of Duty 4 was one of the games held back because you can only have 1 person per box playing over a System Link. And most other games, you can’t fit over 2 players per TV.

But everyone is required to have a PC. (Plus I think 1/4 the price is a bit exaggerated. Maybe 1/2. I built a good solid PC for under $600. My 360 cost more than half that.) If you try playing some games that are free to play or fairly cheap then the computer requirements are not an issue. Not everyone has a console or even access to one. Also, there should be no reason why consoles all of a sudden out number PC people. You guys were going strong and quickly expanding when the consoles were barely holding their first tournaments. Honestly, I see a lack of effort for recruiting more of an on-campus presence. There is virtually NO on-campus PC community as far as I’m concerned. Everyone goes off and does their little thing and plays with their one or two close friends. Maybe if you take steps to re-establish a firm PC community here, things would change.

If more PC people had shown up to the meeting, there would be “better” games. People cant complain if people don’t show up. I understand that 3 people were on IRC but that’s not enough. The only way to get the games you really want to play and that you think people really want to play, tell them to come!

yeah..we should totally drop Gunbound or w/e its called for CS:GG..I suggest GunGame because most people aren’t good enuf for JUST CS and it is tons of fun and similar to CSS:GG and peeps said they couldnt have CSS and CSS:GG even though they were voted high..we had a dood that was coming from VA. to plae CS..now it ain’t there and neither will he..what a shame…Loot.

RTS tournaments really take far too long to play, sorry.

COD4 we have been doing down to teams of 3 so Chupa isn’t winning himself every game. Nice try tho. The reason we chose COD4 is because we can install it for people to play, unlike some other games.

As for UT2K4, I would have gladly played that even if Keith Kelly had come to play simply because I like the game.

We have a pretty large group of people to play CSS and TF2 so I see no reason to change them. As for 1.6… seriously guys why would you want to play basically the same game (1.6 and source) twice at the LAN? That really just isn’t fun. And modifications of the same game are not different enough from the original game to warrant playing them IMO (gungame, zombie, TF2 arena). Remember that one LAN where we played 3 CSS games? the next meeting we voted that we couldn’t ever do that again because it sucked so bad.

I would like to have us play HL2:DM; it’s something different and cmon guys its $5 on steam. Plus if you buy that you can play ANY source-based mod (Insurgency, Age of Chivalry, etc).

ALSO: I agree with loot and would rather play CS:gungame than gunbound. However I will probably play SSBB at that time so it doesn’t really matter to me.

It was previously voted in that only one Counter Strike game could be played per LAN.

you just made my point,, they are pretty much the same thing, so why not play something a bit different than the last lan.. might get some more people to come.

thats not directed towards you nickname,, i was just tossing the idea back out their for some sort of verioty

ah poo..so same CS games means Source and 1.6 or just Source and Source GG and Source Zombie? I think CS:GG is different enuf frum CSS..probably more fun to most people than Gunbound..amazed this random game got voted in..I think when voting at meetings happen, they should be silents votes..like write them on a piece of papyrus so others dont just jump on tha bandwagon or get peer pressured..I wish Keith Kelly would come and play…Loot.

in most RTS games, (Starcraft, AoE2, Red Alert, etc.) one game takes around 5 minutes with 2 people, so if u set up a bracket system with 2v2, you can be done with the tournament in 2 hours with breaks and bathroom and such and depending on how many people play.

We did this last year with CNC3 and 20 peeps and playing time wise, we were done around 2 hours with a 15 min pizza break half way.

it really just comes down to how u organize the teams and bracket system. if need be you could even make teams of 3-4 people and play against each other that way….

The only RTS tournament I’ve ever enjoyed involved world in conflict. Fantastic style of gameplay for tournaments. Downside is people here never had the PC’s to run it :P.

I go to LAN tournaments to play big name games competitively. Ironically out of the 12 tournaments (not WCU) that I’ve played in, Gunbound wasn’t in appearance.

It has been proposed that we have a free play LAN. I could see this type of game working well in that setting. If I want to play some classic old games I’ll do it on my own time. As a PC gamer I go to the LAN to play the current games that I actually spend time playing. Typically these are big name games and the reason they get voted in each event is because PC gamers enjoy them.

I don’t really care too much that Gunbound was voted in. I care more about ‘how’ it was done and ‘why.’

This new idea of ‘lets make our LAN partys as abstract as possible’ is not going to work. Our events will not get bigger hosting no name tournaments. Since the LANs we currently host are Tournament LANs, we need to focus on games that are tournament oriented and well known.

If we need a freeplay LAN then lets vote on it but most indie/casual will not positively affect the growth of our attendance at tournament LANs unless we turn it into an Expo, at which point we would likely be stationed in a much bigger building. When voting one should look at what people are currently playing and what will attract more people. Always think in terms of nation wide advertising. What games will attract people to WCU? Based on our clubs mission statement, we should be focusing on attracting people to the University. Logically the best and most statistically sound way to do that is to choose the popular tournament games and create a fun environment.

My 2 cents on the subject.

Replace PC with console and Gunbound with Wii Bowling, in that entire rant outside of the first sentence and that is the point I wanted to prove by having Gunbound. Thats the most subtle way I can put it with out starting *edited* again.

Agreed. This also means voting on games that we ourselves might not play, but ultimately will bring in more people. I’ve asked this question time and time again, how many people have we lost from consoles alone over games such as Gears, Call of Duty 4, and Guitar Hero, where there is a dedicated competitive community supporting them because other games got voted in. And honestly, it saddens me because the guys that come to these LANs for those games are awesome people and to have them become disappointed, leave, and me not be able to hang out with them for the LAN.

But if the ideal is to vote for games we want to play, then.. well, I want to play something other than Brawl and Wii Bowling, so I voted Gunbound. Because odds were you’d just put that in the toss away slot. I’d play TF2, but it’s always schedule at the same time as some other tournament I like to play in.

I think it would be kinda cool to have a older game at a LAN. In general, if the LAN hosts new popular games, the more people will come to it, but at the same time, its always good to have an older game. Like if for console, you guys could get your hands on several 64″s and plays DK64, Goldeneye and other schweet games. And for PC, get everyone copies of Doom and Red Alert and other games that were phenomenal back when we were all still tiny and allow free play. I think that Gunbound will prove to be enjoyable if people stop complaining about it and play it as it is a game to be enjoyed as the same with wii bowling.

Stop using them as the reasons you are mad and get down to it. I know you guys will still play them and still enjoy yourself….There is an obvious need to amend whatever procedure was used to vote in game because it’s definitely *edited*ing everyone off. I just think its pointless to act like there is a significant difference between consoles and PCs. I personally play both, just since i built my computer i play PC more. Doesn’t mean i wont go downstairs and play madden w/ my friends. its jsut stupid to segregate the club like that. -.-

are you serious?… well i sorta agree, i just remember 3 better than 2 because i played 3 for a year before i played 2 and 2 just seemed old then. 2 really was better, but i like 3 more than the rest. OH i thought Black was phenomenal because like you said, the series just fell off tremendously and i was like “Finally something good”

but what about what i was saying… hosting an older game that we all use to sit 8 inches from teh TV/Screen playing? i plan on coming to the spring LAN, and i will jump up and down yelling if i dont get it. and remember im big, i make things break when i jump lol

Audyo is rite… TM2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> All the rest. TM black wasn’t bad though and honestly TM:HeadOn (PSP) is pretty good. idk what happened with Twisted Metal 4 because it was almost like playing a completely different game.

We seriously need like a 2 day LAN. I would love to play both the PC and console games but it’s just not feasible and for me the PC games win 90% of the time but I would love to come and play some brawl and gears and such, just to have some fun.

We cannot speak for people that don’t come to the meetings that may play at the LAN. Only vote for games you will play, and we will not end up in this mess. Noone can be the judge of people that potentially come to the LANs, so stop trying. If you believe we need a different perspective on game selection, we need more people to come to our meetings – not trying to vote what you think they want.

I love the way that people assume that everyone that doesnt show up to the meetings shouldnt matter when it comes to the LAN. These people do have lives outside of the gaming club and just because they cant make it to the meetings shouldnt mean their beliefs and opinions shouldnt be heard. I do agree with you potion on the fact that this can cause problems but the people that fund our club (the people that come to our LANs) should still have a voice in the games there regardless of whether or not they come to the meetings.
