On most occasions whenever I try to join a server, the game will lock up on the motd screen and I can’t press ok or continue to get to actually play.

On 1 or 2 servers it will say “loading motd please wait” on a white or black background or the section inside the motd window is just black or it partially loads if not all the webpage and occasionally the sound will loop.

To get out of I have to go to task manager to end it and it will say that TF2 is still running fine (it doesn’t say not responding).

But this doesn’t happen all the time, sometimes I can get on a server after a couple of tries if not on the 1st attempt just fine and happily play without any locks/crashes, until the map changes where there’s a chance that the problem will occur once again when the motd loads back up. This only seems to happen when I connect to servers who have a more enriched/advanced motd compared to just general text. Usually there are graphics and such and is an html motd page. If I join servers that only have text as the motd then I have no issues.

To resolve this I’ve tried reinstalling steam, defragging games files, verifying integrity of game cache, cleaning registry, removing/closing any external devices and background programs that may be causing a conflict, using latest display/chipset drivers, updated router firmware, and ran windows memory diagnostic tool.

The only fix/test that seemed to specifically address my problem (that I found on the web) was the paged pool memory test suggestion using process explorer on steam’s knowledge base for game crashing and sound looping but all that came up clear.

So I have no clue wtf is causing it and I’m getting *edited*ed. The last resort I guess I could try a reinstall but I don’t really wont to go into all of that. I have searched all over and have yet to come up with a solution. Please help :weird:

you sure that card is a 256MB?

You have tryed everything i would have suggested allready. On a server that crashes, if you keep trying that same server over and over does it crash every time? Also WCU servers MOTD is one huge JGP image,, does that crash you? and is it only TF2 MOTD’s?

sorry its 512, ill edit my post

If I keep trying its hit or miss. Sometimes it will go forward and sometimes it will just crash/lock. I have figured out that sometimes, to get past it, as soon as the continue button comes up if I click it real fast before the motd really gets a chance to try to show then I can sneak by but this doesn’t work all the time. However sometimes as soon as the sending client info finishes and on the first screen it locks and starts looping sounds and I cannot do anything.

The wcu tf2 comes up just fine and I have not experienced this problem with any other game. However, only other steam games i play are cs1.6 and source and I only play on wcu servers on those two games so I dunno about others. Since wcu tf2 has not been up then I have been playing on random other tf2 pubs.

This crashes alot for me: 8.12.16.111:27015

This one I play on alot and randomly does it: 63.247.91.139:27019

Good to hear. I’ve never seen that problem before but Valve is great at creating stuff like that.

    Final note on this.

After a couple days after the re-install the same exact issue started again…I said WTF. I remembered that I just recently changed some video card settings through the nvidia control panel and messing with resolutions as well. I always set up my custom video card image settings. So I went ahead and changed it back to default which is “let the 3d application decide” and set ingame resolution to 800/600. Issue solved.

So for those that come across this problem, it’s your video card settings!
