I think Sony is FINALLY going to bring back backwards compatability. Looks like it might actually happen.

Emulation of any kind reduces performance, I would be surprised if they got all the games to 100% speed.

Sony really screwed you guys when they took away your entire existing library of games. I find it borderline incredible that the only current-gen console with 100% free backwards compatibility with the previous generation was Nintendo. I thought such a feature was an expectation and not even an option in regards to feature cutting to save money. I mean really, the main chip of a PS2 costs what? $50? They just wanted to push the PS3 out and not worry about it because who doesn’t want to keep that old PS2 hooked up?

Keep in mind that PS2 sales have still been extremely high since the PS3 came out. Now that they are finally starting to decline and production is becoming less profitable (???) they could cancel production and focus on their current-gen console only. Saves money, another cost cutting venture.

I’m still rockin’ the PS2. I wish my PS1 memory card didn’t break though :(

not really mitch…the first gen ps3 systems (20GB and 60GB) had the actual actual hardware to make them backwards compatible…then they discontinued them and replaced them with the 40GB and 80GB…the 80GB in order to cut costs they removed the hardware and replaced it with an emulator and there was absolutly no diffrence…The preformance is acutally better for both…expecially since all graphics are upconverted…soon after this they discontinued all backward compatible modles and claimed that it would be released once they decide to kill PS2

I have an original 60GB version with the hardware

my dad has the old 80GB with the emulator

We have played ps2 games on them.

    PROS:

Plays just as smoothly on both

Upconverts graphics for both PS1 and PS2 games

    CONS:

Cant play games with extra perifs. like original GH1 and 2 and all the PS2 DDRs

It’s a shame though for them to tell you guys that it can be backwards compatible and they already have the software/firmware to do it but won’t do it because they want you to buy another console instead.

That business mentality is part of the reason I never really liked Sony. I can see the benefit of cost cutting but, correct me if I’m wrong, the final sales price stayed the same. If nothing else, those savings should have been passed along instead of pocketed as the original sales price is why many were weary of it.

Well you are right. But they also cant hang their ps2 customers out to dry either. They removed it not to be assholes its because the ps2 was selling very well because its affordable and it has 1600+ games. Developers were willing to continue to make games for it and they still are making a ton. In order for this to happen you have to understand that they need to be separated. When PS3 came out they predicted that PS2 sales would go in the towlet and thats why they had backwards compatibility in the first place. You cant possibly think that they would blatently do something to *edited* their customers off. Because of customer concern and outrage there have been several interviews by SCEA and SCEJ on the matter.

Either way its not hard to find a backwards compatible ps3 at the current moment, so if your worried about it and cant wait for the update go get a backwards compatible one on the internet. Also ps2s dont cost anything so its not a big deal, even if you dont have a backwards compatible ps3.

This is why I never throw away consoles.

I have a game room for this stuff:) Everything from Intellivision to Atari to N64 to PS1 to Wii. I still play all of them.

    :)
