ParticipantSeems like an interesting idea. Though with how much will be running in my room (Computers, TV, fridge) the lights out seems necessary.
Seems cool that whole cities will be trying it though.

ParticipantUpdate: I spent Earth Hour watching a movie with my mom. This required lots of electronic devices going on at the same time. Let the hippies *edited*; I had a great time.

Turning OUR power out doesn’t really help. If you had everyone on the planet do this it still wouldn’t matter. Not polluting for 1 hour doesn’t come close to making up for the 23 other hours. That would be 4.17% of the daily emissions. Big deal.
Besides, they have yet to prove “global warming” and the US government has rejected the idea of charging companies for “carbon credits” due to lack of evidence on the subject.

ParticipantI have a bad feeling about the direction this thread is going, but here goes:
The world’s population is around the general area of six billion. I am no environmental expert, but less than .5% of that turning off their lights for one hour is not going to do much of anything to help the planet. The entire project comes off as silly.
I think many environmentalists have a noble goal, but if they want to get John Q. Public on their side, they have to try a lot harder than this.

ParticipantSilly maybe, but it is a nice thought.

ParticipantIn cities that participate, do they force residents to comply by turning their power off or do they get to choose whether or not to participate? None of the articles I’ve read really said.

ParticipantGood way to end this was here with the simple statement, “Whats it going to hurt”
Maybe its just be, but whats the point of bashing the idea? Cant we all be friends, with out cutting each others throat? I for one would like to see the jackass attitude be left on someone else’s server.
the whole idea was to raise awareness, now just maybe people will cut the lights out when they leave the room. I for one am the worst about that.

We were pointing out the fact that 1 hour a year can’t make up for the other 8759 hours in the year and that makes us jackasses? Some would call that a common sense question.
Sure there’s plenty of symbolic meaning to the 1 hour but symbolism alone can’t fix pollution.

ParticipantCan’t we all just get along?
The purpose of this entire thread was to raise awareness and have a discussion, not to start a flame war.
/thread.
