ParticipantWell. I decided to install Vista, Getting tired of XP. I got another hard drive, and im going to install it there.
Theres one thing i want. I want it to ASK me what HD to boot from on BOOTUP screen after POST.
Like
Windows XP
Windows Vista
and you chose with arrow keys, ive seen this at my couzins house a year ago, but dint ask him how to do it, and he lives in florida.
So please help, maybe i need to change some jumpers, i will do just tell me what position to put them both in.
For extra info,
1st. HD 320 GB WD
2nd HD 40 GB Maxtor, Found on street, going to re format and use.

ParticipantInstall normally on 2nd drive and it should automatically put it’s entry in the bootloader (the menu for you to pick which one you want). If it doesn’t, repost and let me know.

Participantaight, but what should jumpers be on both drives?

ParticipantCable select is generally the way to go. You can be more specific and set the primary drive (the 320GB to master) and the smaller drive to slave but I generally recommend leaving them on cable select to keep from having issues.

ParticipantVista will call XP “Previous version of Windows”.
When you get to that point let us know and I’ll get you the command to change it.
Also as a warning, if you put Vista on an old hard drive, you WILL be disappointed in the performance you get. Vista expects you to have a decent hard drive and an “old 40 gig you found on the street” probably isn’t going to cut it.

ParticipantWell. Im using it, its fine, i mean for MY PC, its not that fast, but i like it.
Uhh. im going to re boot and connect everything, and put ma 4 gigs in cause i couldnt install vista with 4 gigs o ram. kk Ill tell you went to give me command and what to do with it.
PS. Thanks for the Help! I appreciate it.

Participant2 new problems
When i boot it boots straight to Vista
And i have to plug out IDE cable from Vista HD for XP not to freeze up…
Any clues?
Both HDD’s not SATA

Participantyou must first install XP with both hard drives present THEN install vista. This way the computer can recognize both and will display the boot menu.

June 2, 2009 at 10:46 pm #86172MasterP
ParticipantYes you can fix it but it’s about 1000000000000000 times easier to just reinstall Vista with the XP drive in.

1) Type cmd into the start search, right click and select “Run as Administrator”.
2) Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (again, right click and select “right click and select “Run as Administrator”).
3) Go to C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe (again, right click and select “Run as Administrator”).
