ParticipantHey all,
I just wanted to prod your opinion on this.
I have always been faithful to headsets- having a built in mic seemed to be the way to go for me. That has always limited my headphone selection as I needed something with a built in mic.
The idea came up that if I got some sort of high quality desktop mic, perhaps the Blue Snowball, that the combination of the snowball and a nice pair of headphones would be superior to a gaming headset.
What are your thoughts? Do you feel a set that is designed for gaming would be > high quality music headphones + high quality microphone.
Thanks!

Don’t buy seperate.
Gaming headsets are designed for multiplayer gaming, which means it has a mic. Any “gaming” headset that doesn’t have a mic is just an overpriced, overly large ipod headset.
Even the most expensive standalone mics still sound terrible to your teammates because you’re typically over a foot from it. You normally can’t enable noise cancelling for fear of it silencing yourself which means that everything in the room is going to come through on voice comms and every little noise is going trigger the voice activation.

I have had like 3 cheap (~$40) sennheiser pairs that I have broken. I had a steelseries 5h V2 that I tripped over the cable and broke the 3.5mm plug. I bent the plug back and rma’d it (that broken set was my fault). The replacement lasted a while. I had it sitting on my pc case (~2ft off the ground) and it fell of on to a hard wood floor and snapped in half. I should say, though, that it wasn’t the first dive the headset took. So, that break was on me.
It is very sad when they break

I have gone with a new strategy: always use an extension cable. Now, when I inevitably trip, it just detaches.

I’m using this atm. Have tripped on in twice and it’s still going. I’ve also dropped it but it was on carpet so that’s not really a good indicator. The construction looks and feels weak but it’s surprisingly strong.
