I haven’t been very active on facebook in a while, but I still have a social life and friends and as a result I get tagged in pictures. Well, in this day and age where companies don’t just do a background check on you, but also hire other companies to dig up e-dirt on you, it’s getting to be too much. I have to watch what I say now.. and that was not what Facebook was originally intended to be. Now parents are on it… just the other day my Aunt posted “Come on guys, keep it clean. Don’t post offensive words.” That’s it for me.. I can’t take it anymore. There hasn’t been any point in doing anything on Facebook in a while now, but it can still be used against me.

PRIVACY SETTINGS SUCK. I swear someone is going to get sued one day because a company didn’t hire someone because of their facebook and the person was using *edited*ty FB privacy settings. IRL you have no idea what your employees do when they go home anyway. In fact, most of the people doing the hiring probably drink, smoke, whatever.. they just see fit to judge when they see pictures of someone else doing it (which they shouldn’t be seeing in the first place).

Anyway, I have decided that I am going to have to restrict all of my photos to a select group of friends and then untag myself from everyone else’s pictures. Now, this is possibly erasing 6 years of pictures from my life (how long I’ve been on Facebook).

copy/save all the pictures. sure it will take you nearly 4 hours, but it will prevent you from regretting not having that picture of you doing the naked keg stand to show to your grandchildren one day.

GL with this. I’ve heard it’s impossible to actually delete your profile.

Ah, well I wasn’t actually planning on deleting my profile… and I looked at it and I’m going to have to pull my foot out of my mouth a bit.

I ended up just making my pictures available only to a small group of friends. Now, we’ll see how that works out but I didn’t think you could do this before. I also found a bunch of other privacy settings and I removed a lot of information about myself in general.

I’m still really aggravated with the whole thing though.

I have deleted nearly 500 people from facebook when i was job hunting 2 years ago. If it is not someone I talk to on a monthly/yearly basis they were cut. This limits the chance of something thats a friend of a friend is willing to come across. and absolutely no co-workers for any reason what so ever. If a coworker ask to be my facebook friend, I send them a Linkedin invite.

The real trick is if you dont want someone to know about it then why did you let anyone know about it. AKA i was arrested last weekend but i didn’t post my mug shot up on the net for everyone to ask questions about… oh *edited*, wai wut?

There is an option to delete your profile, but because the *edited*s don’t want you to, they make it hard to find. There’s an option to DEACTIVATE your profile that’s easy enough to find, but when I was considering deleting my profile (which I still may do), I had to search the Help section for how to do it and even then, it wasn’t even the first result. It was like the 5th one down.

My understanding is that even if you delete your profile it doesn’t completely unlink your picture tags.

Hmm, I’m not so sure about that. If I recall correctly, if you deactivate your profile, your name will still show up under the tags, but it won’t be a link to your profile anymore. I don’t think any of my friends have deleted their accounts. I’ve only seen a bunch of deactivated ones.

Also, to add to my previous comment, as far as I know, the only place to find the link to the page to delete your account is in that help article. God, I hate facebook.

Should be a privacy setting that doesn’t allow others to tag you.

I don’t think there is one. I know there’s a setting that won’t show the pictures you’re tagged in to certain people.

Yup. I use them (the ones to allow only certain people to see your tagged photos).

Yeah, I only recently discovered this and have been using it ever since.

I’m still not convinced it will help.
