    Console Meeting Minutes

    September 12, 2008

    In attendance:

    Casey Scarbro AKA ExiLe

Christopher Campfield AKA tF Dark Omen

    Curtis Campfield AKA tF Rudi

    Shawna Hipps AKA Nalgenie

    Joseph DeLong AKA Thor

    Matt Proffitt AKA Heritage

    Dustin Baker AKA tF Hurricane

    Michael Moore AKA tF Audyo

    Joshua Schwartz AKA Josrocket

    Michael Huffman AKA Kaz-Ka

    John Bartlett AKA Eyce

    Brenton Barber AKA tF Shingi

    Ephraim Freed AKA Groundshaker

    Minutes:

The meeting began at 8:03 PM.

First to be discussed was the possible addition of Soul Calibur 4 (PS3) to the next LAN’s tournaments. The proposition was accepted.

It was suggested that a team-based Super Smash Bros Brawl tournament be featured at the next LAN. It was decided the idea needs further discussion before an official decision is made.

There was a discussion as to how team selection will work in Halo 3, Gears of War, and Call of Duty 4. Console President Brenton Baker (tF Shingi) suggested that those signed up for team-based console tournaments could choose to play in their own organized team, or have their names put into a randomizer. The proposition was accepted.

Game types wre selected for several tournaments:

    CoD4=Sabotage

    Gears of War=Execution

    Halo 3=Team Slayer

MLG settings will be the standard for these tournaments. Brenton Barber will anounce far more detailed tournament settings in the near future.

Settings for the Super Smash Bros Brawl tournament were anounced:

2 stock, 4-minute limit, Best 2-of-3. Finals will be best 3-of-5. More details will be anounced in the near future.

There was a discussion on the possible banning of four Soul Calibur 4 characters (Darth Vader, Yoda, Algol, and The Apprentice). It was decided that the issue needs more exploration.

After a brief discussion, the Mario Kart Wii tournament was cancelled. In its place, a Guitar Hero 3 tournament will be held. Settings will be anounced in the near future.

Potential Free Play games were sugested:

    -Pain

    -Rock Band

    -Castle Crashers

    -Tekken 5

    -Wii Bowling

    -Mario Kart Wii

It was suggested that a poll be introduced during the next LANs registration:

When someone registers to attend the LAN, they are polled as to what new games they would like to see in future LANs.

There were many words of support for this suggestion.

Those in attendance were advised to attend the Mini-LAN taking place the next day.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM.

No Mario Kart or Wii Bowling? Wtf?

What was the point of even having a vote for console games at the general meeting if the results were subject to change later?

They’re going to be there. Just not as tournaments.

I figured Id go ahead and throw out there the fact that Darth Vader and The Apprentice will not be banned because honestly, it would take a LONG time to be insanely cheap with them. Algol is still up in the air, if anyone has any suggestions about more SC IV rules or Smash for that matter let me know.

At the meeting we were discussing on how to run the Mario Kart Wii tournament. When no one knew any good settings I asked in general who all actually wanted to play the game as a tourney and the result was none. So we took a vote to replace it with another game that had more interest and that was Guitar Hero III. Voting for games at the club meeting allows me to see which games have a lot of interest and serve as a guideline as to what games are popular. It’s not like we just go later and pick whichever games we want we still go by the votes at the club meeting. So all this comes down to was that Guitar Hero is a better tournament game than Mario Kart and there was no interest in it at all at the console meeting.

Also, Ephraim man my last name isn’t Baker. It’s Barber, lol.

Was just curios because at the general meeting both Mario Kart Wii and Wii Bowling got more votes than Soul Calibur 4 and Guitar Hero 3. There were ALOT more people at the general meeting so I would hope it would be the basis of interest instead of the smaller meeting.

I’m not going to tell you how to run the consoles because I really don’t care how well you do but not knowing good tournaments settings doesn’t mean PCs switch games. If it did we wouldn’t play half the games we do. Several people bragged about running tournaments before (IE Gamestop), if that’s REALLY the case you can’t tell me they can’t sit down for 5 minutes and figure it out.

On another note, you guys should take into consideration that a lot of people do not know how to play guitar hero on hard… it takes out a lot of the fun when they are getting completely demolished by their opponent. WII bowling is simple, anyone can play and the same goes for Mario Kart.

I personally dont even remember discussing anything about settings for mario kart, but then again i was at the other half of the table for most the meeting and couldnt hear as is, as for dropping games though it should have been 1 of the 3 first person shooters like gears, but hell the decission was going to be made regaurdless.

Another point I would make. As far as Mario Kart goes, no one at our meeting had a copy of it. Therefore, we have no knowledge of what exactly is in the game. I don’t think any of us know anyone with a copy of the game for that matter.

We decided to bring Gears back since it still has a fairly large fan base AND with the release of Gears of War 2 around the corner, there’s renewed interest in the original anyways.

Wii Bowling and Mario Kart Wii are still going to be around. It’s not like we’ve banned them entirely. We’re going to have free play stations available and this time we’re going to monitor so four people don’t hog a console all LAN playing the same game.

I had a copy of mario kart wii and the tourney could be played very similar to mario kart 64 (imagine that)

I had to think about this but guys I have a very serious problem with what went down here. It is the duty of the club to play the games that are VOTED to be played; not the games that a select few want to play. Now which is a better representation of the club: the 13 people at the console meeting or the almost 50 at the general club meeting? Now if you want to add additional games, those should be based purely on the number of votes that each game received; as its already been said, both Mario Kart Wii and Wii Bowling received more votes than GH3 and SC3. Of course if you wanted to up to another tournament, GH3 would be an obvious choice because it received the next highest # of votes, etc.

I could argue this stuff all day but it all comes down to this: If you guys are going to go and decide the games without the entire club’s input, that’s fine (we would need an amendment to the constitution) but DONT waste the club’s time in the general meeting to vote in games if you aren’t going to adhere to those votes.

The turn out for Wii Bowling/Mario kart is generally 2-3x that of GH3 or Gears War and probably greater than the two put together. This was probably reflected at the original meeting. I don’t know how you plan to “override” the general meeting votes, but that’s not what the Console P/VP positions were created for. I should know, I created them.

For the record, I mentioned I own a copy of Mario Kart Wii. Also, there wasn’t really a vote; it was more of a general consensus.

Oh, and sorry about the name Shingi. I knew I was going to screw that up.

    #56353

I knew this was going to happen with the split of the PC/Consul.

What should have happened is the consul games would be voted on at the big general meeting. General meeting meaning everyone in general (PC, consul, everyone). At the smaller meetings things like how are we going to run the voted games, how we setting up the consul lan flow, order of events, special consul fun nights or what ever they wanned. Things like “none of us have that game” should have been brought up at the general meeting. and for those that actually play consul game at the lan should have went to their meeting if you really cared what was going on. On a side note: I have received a few PM’s (which will stay private) about how one’s did not really like how this consul meeting was ran, i posted that so you now know and perhaps next time things will be ran smoother.

audios, cant wait to LAN day, looking forward to seeing some cod4 ps3 action. :)

If I had known games were going to be changed I would have gone, as would have many others. If you’re going to be making changes like this, EVERYONE needs to know in advance, that way people that might want to play consoles but don’t care how the tournaments are set up (IE PC gamers) might show up. Note the way you announced the meeting:

    Shingi said:

I’ll be holding the first console meeting of the semester this Friday in the Cat’s Den at 8 p.m. The purpose of this meeting will assess where we stand as far as what free play will go on at the LAN’s and also other events that we can possible hold.

That doesn’t even hint at the possibility to overriding the general meeting vote as far as games go therefor most assume the games played will be the ones previously voted in.

I agree with a previous post, if the general meeting voting doesn’t count don’t bother having one as the PC voting REALLY got shafted because we ran out of time after spending 15-20 minutes nominating and voting on console games.

Also, I would bet that there are more copies of Mario Kart Wii on campus than there are PS3s. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but as far as overall sales and marketshare go you should be having more Wii tournaments than the XBOX360 and PS3 as it has outsold both by a sizeable margin; over twice the sales of the PS3 and 9% more than the XBOX. Now I know gamers don’t like numbers presented like this but that means we should be jumping towards attracting Wii players, not the handful of rich people who have PS3s on campus. Wii gamers may not be into slingshotting people into buildings but they are attracted to a good Mario Kart tournament.

Honestley I dont see what the big deal is all about, its not like the games choosen over Mario Kart had virtually no votes. And another thing, just because it did not have more votes at the first meeting does not mean that it will be any less popular because everyone that shows up at the LAN does not show up to the meetings. We are also gonna be handing out surveys to the people who come to see what the most popular games really are on campus, that way we can see what the people who show up to the LANs actually like instead of just restricting the games to voting at the meetings that half of the people at the LAN will not show up to anyway.

By not coming to meetings those people agree to the terms of the LANs that they are attending AS IS. If they really have that big of a problem with the selected games, they need to be at the meetings. If they don’t want to do that, they accept the LAN for what it is and need to STFU. By not listening to the votes at the general meeting you are turning of the people that actually care about the event. The people who were willing to drop what they were doing and come to a meeting to make the event better. It is not your job to over ride what the population voted for because you believe it will be more popular. It’s your job to listen to those votes and make sure that those games that were voted for are ran as smoothly and enjoyable as possible. People that are having fun and attend meetings bring friends with them. People that come by and aren’t going to meetings are at the event to win prizes and flaunt epeens. LISTEN TO THE VOTES, YOU CANNOT OVERRIDE THEM AND IF THE PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB LETS YOU, SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE. (Not that something wasn’t seriously wrong anyways.)

I was going to post something extravagant but Kuros did it so I won’t. For what it’s worth, you’ve lost me as a console player at this LAN for this type of decision making and probably at least a dozen other PC gamers who don’t want the big, drawn out tournaments.

So your going to tell me that the people who come to the LANs, the people that we get our money from to help run the this dont matter if they show up to one meeting? Thats just plain ignorance to me.

You have a lot to learn about administration.

This club was founded and designed around growth and recruitment. The club continues to grow despite mentally retarded executives and continues to bring people to the university because they have managed to adhere somewhat to the overall design of the club. Are you telling me that after 2 weeks of experience and ZERO LANs under your belt you are already smarter than over 4 years of experience and well over 10 LANs?

We’ve done plenty of polls in the past, and they are generally successful but it doesn’t solve the problem that you have at this LAN. Also, handing out polls is a good time to PUSH THE MEETINGS ON PEOPLE THAT WANT CHANGES! Remember that, use every opportunity you have as a tool to make our family bigger.

Polls are fine to hand out but people rarely fill them out. You’ll notice the last time we did one for general suggestions and comments there were quite a few that were left blank in the playing areas.

Yea, I understand about people not wanting to fill out the polls and the fact that some people are upset but honestly, the only person at the meeting that actually had a copy of Mario Kart at the meeting was Ephiram. I don’t anyone else who does (besides Nickname I believe) that has it and that is an issue that influenced our decision at the Friday meeting. Its kind of hard to run a tournament if you dont know for a fact that people will actually bring the game.

And as far as the polls go, it could be put on the registration sheet and made manditory that way we actually get mroe imput for the LANs.

You’ve had Smash Brothers miniLANs for the past few weeks, you can’t tell me none of them have it. Also, something that hasn’t been explained is why Wii Brawl was thrown out when all it takes is a single projector, which we already have more of at this LAN due to the Dell sponsorship. It also had more votes than games being played.

Btw, I find it mildly entertaining that the “we can’t find anyone with one or that has any interest” attitude has been changed from PS3s to Nintendo games that have historically done well at LANs.

Mandatory won’t work people want to be able to have choice and not feel obligated by things. It makes something more enjoyable when you don’t HAVE to do it. I would hand them out as people are leaving, this way you can ask “what do we need to do differently” rather than “what do you want done.” You are much more likely to get answers that aren’t tailored to individual players this way. You’ll get more of the same responses over and over if there was a problem that was really significant.

No one has even brought up the fact that they have the game at the Smash miniLANs because all they care about is Smash lol. Its like you guys said earlier, if they cared about Mario Kart, they would have shown up to the meeting (the console meeting) to try to lend a helping hand. And as far as Brawl goes it’s definitley still going to be at the LAN unless I missunderstand what your saying. As a matter of fact, one of the key discussions we are going to have soon is a Brawl Teams Tournament.

so here is a question to the PC guys. So if me and a bunch of people who are hardcore console gammers came to a meeting and all voted for some random PC game that we liked to play and it took the spot of one or two of your usual games wouldnt you be mad? would you be like “this isnt fair b/c we are the ones who play these games competitivly and put the time we put the time into making these tournaments good.” The Console meeting was for those people who actually cared about what happens during the console portion of the LAN. I myself told atleast 4 or 5 people to come that didnt just for the fact that they themselves were just playing the PC games. Now i get where you are comming from about Votes at the main meeting but honestly i know most of the console gamers didnt vote for the PC games to be played b/c its not a big deal to us. But when the console stuff comes up the PC players just voted for casual games that yall probably dont even play that much. So how come when we want to put the games we all decided on at the console meeting that no PC people were at we get yelled at? We all just are thinking about what would be the most fun for our type of gamer.
