Obama fires somebody that has helped save millions of lives in Africa because he was appointed by Bush, Replublican, and partially taught abstinence? I guess partisanship is more important than the lives of millions of Africans.
Quote:
One high-ranking Obama official admitted that the decision was “political.” Yet the AIDS coordinator is not a typical political job, distributed as spoils, like some deputy assistant position at the Commerce Department. It involves directing a massive emergency operation to provide lifesaving drugs, through complex logistics, to some of the most distant places on Earth. And now that operation may be months without effective leadership — undermining morale, complicating interagency cooperation, delaying new prevention initiatives and postponing budget decisions. It is difficult to imagine what vision of public service could cause any Obama official to celebrate a victory by sabotaging a good man and a good cause. And it is difficult to conceive what political gain Obama has achieved. This type of captivity to extreme interests is precisely what has discredited Democrats so often in the past. It is a kind of politics with all the “newness” of a purge, all the “freshness” of a mugging.

ParticipantBush actually had one of the best records of any president when it came to foreign AIDS relief. Everyone seems to gleefully skip over that. Bush, best at something? Right…
There’s really no reason to swap this position out unless your goal is to kill people. The guy in place is obviously doing a very good job and it seems rather un-messiah like to play partisan politics like this. I mean he was all about change but this move seems rather deadly. I would think that him being African-American might inspire some sort of compassion towards his people over there but I guess loyalty is overrated these days.

ParticipantI do believe you just deflected and derailed. Tbh, I’m surprised it took you this long to do so. It’s going to be interesting trying to bash Obama because his followers believe he can do no wrong and when you prove he did they just deflect and bring up Bush.
How about instead of bashing Bush for the response time of a department he didn’t run you defend Obama’s mistakes that he himself ordered.

Participantyou do know that was all FEMA right?…
The President isn’t supposed to oversee all disaster relief, there is a whole agency for that.

ParticipantSo lemme get this right…your best defense of the entirety of the bush administration is how he put us even further into debt spending money overseas while simultaneously not helping Americans?
February 2, 2009 at 7:25 pm #69995YouWinGameOver
Participant…all i was saying was trying to correct Lockem, I didn’t say anything about Obama I think it was stupid that he removed him from the position.

As for Katrina, we have already stated that Bush did not even run the department, although he should have moved faster to get the feds involved.

ParticipantI never said anything about african aid causing a crisis, and with regard to Katrina, the argument that fema is not “his department” doesn’t even mean anything. Of course there are directors for all departments, but the President sure as hell has sway over them. The point is that bush did essentially nothing for an extended period. Also, nobody blames the actual hurricane on him. That’s not what people mean when they say “remember Katrina.” They’re talking about the failure to respond.
FEMA = FEDERAL emergency management agency, meaning that the Chief of State/Executive can and should most definitely guide it in a time of crisis.
February 2, 2009 at 8:06 pm #70005Ephraim
ParticipantThe point is that whenever Obama does something wrong, his supporters can simply deflect the subject back to Bush, even when Bush did nothing wrong. Kinda like what happened in this thread.

Participantwow, I guess this really is just an excuse to troll…I’m all for accountability regardless of party, but “Bush did nothing wrong?” This is certainly not intelligent discussion.

My point was that Obama is off to a lousy start when it comes to humanitarian aide in African nations. When it came to helping Africans, Bush did nothing wrong.

ParticipantOh, OK. As for the firing of Mark Dybul, it was done because he was pushing to use as much of the money as possible for abstinence only programs, so it seems to be a policy difference that got him fired. Plus, It’s not like someone else can’t do the job inline with the new policy. At the very least it doesn’t seem to be arbitrary.

That is not how you run government agencies. Especially not ones that save millions of lives.

ParticipantI agree with you guys that this may have been a hasty error, but really not one that is going to mean much of anything. Maybe the reason Obama fired him was because of this:
“A few radical “reproductive rights” groups — the fringe of a fringe — accused Dybul of advocating “abstinence only” programs in AIDS prevention. It was always a lie. Dybul consistently supported comprehensive prevention efforts that include abstinence, faithfulness and condom use — the approach that African governments themselves developed. In fact, Dybul was sometimes attacked from the right for defending a broad definition of AIDS prevention, including programs to address prostitution and transgenerational sex. Over the years, PEPFAR distributed 2.2 billion condoms — hardly an “abstinence only” approach. “
I mean you all are saying that this was very partisan of Obama to do, but one could also say that he was “reaching” across to the right, right as in republicans who clearly didn’t like him, by firing this guy.

It fits though, Obama didn’t hire anyone from the existing intelligence community because they were in the existing intelligence community, you know, those evil people who were complacent in torturing terrorists captured on the battlefield by making them stand naked infront of women. Oh noes!
If Obama is willing to fire anyone, regardless of how epic a job they were doing, simply because they have an ® beside their name when they talk on TV I hate to see how we’re going to look in 4 years.

ParticipantI think we seriously need to get rid of this 2 party bull*edited* system who cares if someone is republican or democrat if they are doing a good job he/she should leave them where they are.

Wikipedia said:
-It is a socialist republic ruled by the Communist Party of China under a single-party system and has jurisdiction over twenty-two provinces, five autonomous regions, four municipalities, and two Special Administrative Regions.-The PRC is considered to be a major power and an emerging superpower,[4][5] holding a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and memberships in the WTO, APEC, East Asia Summit, and Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
-China is a nuclear state and has the world’s largest standing army and fourth largest defense budget. China is one of the world’s fastest growing economies in terms of nominal GDP growth, and is the fastest-growing major economy.[6] It has the world’s third largest GDP in nominal terms or second largest in purchasing power…
That sounds like working to me.
Of course it depends on what definition of “worked” you have.
