ParticipantAs far as the LANs, I went to a meeting with a head of the Cat’s Den. we can only get the “Cat’s Den” section of it, not the Aramark section. this would only stretch from the door to the racing game, maybe, it’s not all that sizeable. It could likely house a console-only LAN if you want to look into that.

Smart move for them because now the Cat’s Den actually has people in it, quite a few of them in fact.
Considering how successful the “rent” was I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t do it again next year.

Participantat least with the setup described when i talked to him, about the (previously) “Cat’s Den side” you’d be terribly pressed for space if you did a pc lan… I would estimate it’s capacity to be roughly equivalent to say one section of a divided multi-purpose room, and that LAN was tight.
eh, eyeball it and see what you think. to me back when we talked to the guy, we were visualizing maybe from where the cat’s den windows start to the wall with the racing game.

Participantteh question is not if we can fit. we can. i got 90 ppl in the MP room dident eye. yes it was crowded, but i got alot of feedback that the enviorment was alot funner.
the question is: does the club wont to do this? and is someone going to go talk to them?

April 6, 2008 at 9:58 pm #42280MasterP
ParticipantKeep in mind that even if you did get the arcade side of the Cat’s Den, there are like 3 tables over there now and the Cat’s Den would not be happy if we stole 90% of their tables. Plus even with all the tables in there we wouldn’t have enough sitting space so we’d have to bring in more which means we have to get them from the UC anyway and move them ourselves because the Cat’s Den doesn’t have a setup crew.
I really hate to naysay on this because it would be nice to have it there but keep in mind the UC staff did a absolutely superb job at the last LAN. If they continue to set things up EXACTLY as we want I would be hesitant before moving away.

ParticipantI agree with masterP
Although it may be fun to have the arcade games and stuff at the lan if we do it at the cats den, i just cant see the space working out. They have the pool table and the pingpong tables that take up a good section of the area and besides that i believe it would just be really crowded. And who know how many people would want to play the arcade games, that would just be something besides the terniments that every executive is going to have to orginize and deal with. I mean we could have five people lined up to play one game and then they all have a different idea as to how much time they should get to play said game.
I mean i think it would be an interesting thing to try but i just dont think it would be worth it. As masterP said we would have to haul most of the table from the uc to the cats den and then they have no real easy access drop off point for everyone who needs to bring computers and the parking could be very slim down there depending on the weekend that you decide to do it on.
Just my two cents >>

Participantthe point is not to move for the arcade games, its for the tight space atmosphere vibe. Everyone keeps talking about how great the LAN was when we moved it into the UC’s MP room. 114ppl in that tiny aurs room, the Den is ucking HUGE!!!
Now how can you both assume we half to move tables? If I had this train of though when i moved the lans out of the labs and into the UC, Gess wut,,, Wouldent have happened. does eather the MP or Grandroom have our setup? I had to talk to someone and get the details. We got them to bring us tables and set everything up. whats to say the den wont do the same?

I had to talk to someone and get the details. We got them to bring us tables and set everything up. whats to say the den wont do the same? The Cat’s Den doesn’t have it’s own set of tables and it’s unlikely they would move a dozen or more across campus. If they were to move them the fees associated with hosting a LAN would probably double to account for the extra labor. A LAN there would probably require us to use the tables that are already there and those wouldn’t support many at all considering the majority of them are round tables. You’d end up with a cabling nightmare and they are extremely touchy about letting people in outside their normal operating hours so setup would be a problem. They don’t even like IT being in there when they aren’t.
Also keep in mind that the Cat’s Den isn’t set up for network activity the way the UC is so that might be a problem. Also, as I’ve said before, kitchen equipment typically uses a different power socket than the powerbox the UC gives us so you’d need to verify that before doing any further planning on this front.

ParticipantI still think a LAN at Brown would be fun. But, I have an odd unexplained fondness for the place.
Seriously though, if someone does their homework and everything checks out I say go for it.

Participanti mean im not saying its nessisarially a bad idea i am more concerned about all the equiptment that others are going to bring. The UC has an easy loading area where you can park and stay for a little bit while you load in your things. Brown has that too but its extremely hard to get in and out of expecially if you have a lot of cars biding for the spot at the same time.
I dont know much about the electronics of it all but i do know about convinience, and that convinience is going to go down for our lan attendies. Ive walked all over the said loading zone when i lived at central and i also know the parking up there. I just dont think it would be good for our attendies.
Like i said i am not completely against it but i do know that the parking is unpredictable. Sometimes it would be fine and there would be a lot of parking other weekends the parking lots would be completely full and we can never tell which it will be.
The UC at least has a continuous type of parking most of the time because it is not near a dorm.

ParticipantPersonally, I could take it either way. If I’d have to guess, I’d say the Grandroom is better equipped for the LANs. Although, the Cat’s Den has a friendlier atmosphere.

ParticipantQuestion is, do we want to take the time to plan extra events? Cause I think we’ve all agreed that it’d be good for PC or Console only Not both.
