Well luckily for AMD, ATI is starting to turn out some decently competitive products (have you read anything on the new ATI IGP? it bests lowend discrete nvidia cards!). The problem AMD has is this whole Phenom thing… and they have so much invested in it there is really no way out. Plus ATI getting behind the ball with their last couple of generations of cards means it will take quite some time before they start making money again. I honestly don’t know how they can survive.

Yes I know all about ATI’s low-end cards.

As to the whole surviving thing, Intel is being forced to bail them out by means of the myriad of lawsuits. According to normal business law they should be an acquisition target but neither the US or EU court system will let that happen.

From researching for my new build, Ati is getting wonderful reviews on it’s cards and terrible reviews on it’s drivers. And this comes from the guy that wrote DirectX. Argue that man’s reliability.

One thing that makes me sad: Newegg taxes in NJ :(. On a 1200 build that is like an $80 charge :(. I need to find a loophole :).

I actually love NJ. The only gross part is northern where the turnpike goes through. The rest of it is very nice. I need to find a friend in Pennsylvania to mail stuff to :).

I’m not touching the ATIvs Nvidia flame war other than to say I <3 Nvidia and that chart about crashes in Vista is likely because there is more Nvidia cards out there.

I will say that for games the Core 2 E8400 is likely to be much better and cheaper than the Q9300. Depends on what other apps you run and how multi-threaded they are.

Also, do you have any dreams of overclocking one day?

I don’t know much about overclocking. I wouldnt’ want to do anything that could be harmful to the system and risk the money that I sink into it. If it is no risk than sure!

When pushing higher voltages to a chip than it’s supposed to have, there’s always a risk.

If you know nothing about overclocking then I suggest that you don’t do it! Messing with stuff without knowing what you are doing CAN damage your hardware.

Plus let’s be honest, with the chips you are looking to acquire, overclocking really isn’t necessary.

I can walk you through it, but there are a lot of factors and it can be a full days job sometimes to figure out how to get a touchy processor to run stable.
