Goddam fan’s making it sound like it’s about to take off. I’ve checked how many programs/apps are running and it’s only around 63. Only 10% CPU usage. I’ve cleaned the *edited* thing from dust but it’s still running hot as well. Do I just have a *edited*ty fan? It used to run silent.

ParticipantYeah, I’ve had a virus issue a lil over a month ago which was solved, but the fan issue occurred before that. The same thing happened to the laptop I had before (it was a Dell). I’m guessing laptops just break down after only a couple years?

ParticipantThe virus could be maxing out your CPU and reporting a false load to task manager. Happens all the time with rootkits.
Boot to a mobile linux OS (Ubuntu or Knoppix) and see if you still have the problem once the OS is up and running.

ParticipantDownload Ubuntu, burn it on a CD, boot to the CD, choose the “try it” option. Once the OS is loaded, see if your fans are still going crazy.

ParticipantMitch out of all the Linux versions that are out there which one would you suggest?
I’ve always wanted to try Linux, but I dunno….

ParticipantI hate linux but if you have to use it go with Ubuntu. It’s the easiest to learn IMO.
Others will probably disagree with that but it really all boils down to preference.

Participantive got Ubuntu and 7 on my tower. Ubuntu is really simple if you just want to play around on it. i wouldnt suggest it as the primary OS for gamers though.

ParticipantImportant to note here might be that I don’t dualboot. All secondary OS’s I use are virtualized using VMWare.

ParticipantI’ve always liked Fedora / Red Hat… I find that the command line is easier to understand than ubuntu… but then again I think I decided a while back that I hate ubuntu for some arbitrary reason and have left it at that.

Participanthonestly mandriva is probably the easiest linux to use, then after that it is a tie between ubuntu and fedora, though i give ubuntu the edge there because it uses less beta software and is therefore more stable.
by easiest i mean everything actually works out of the box; if you start talking command line stuff like lemmon there, the order is reversed, fedora being the best then ubuntu then mandriva.
do not bother with any other distros. stuff like SuSE and xandros are terrible unless you are a linux guru.
