ParticipantIf anything, it might be a halfway decent martial arts movie, even if it sucks as a dragonball movie…. but that’s being optimstic…

ParticipantEven if he’s a Saiyan, he’s supposed to be Asian. Everyone I talked to has agreed that if there was EVER to be a live action DBZ movie, they imagined that Goku would be Asian. This is an outrage.

Participantexactly and even though that actor is really good and has been accepted into that community of martial arts he should not be the star

This is an outrage. If you take a close look at the character designs of different animes, it’s kind of difficult to discern the ethnicity of the characters. Still, I think an asian Goku would be more acceptable. After all, his name is Goku, not Johnny.

I didn’t say that he really is Asian in the series; just that everyone I’ve spoken to has imagined that an Asian would be cast as Goku.
On a related note, Asians are a lot better at cosplay than… well, everyone. (imo).

ParticipantReally the term asian is such a sloppy designation. Technically speaking, someone born and raised in Jerusalem is just as much an asian as someone born and raised in Tokyo. I think when we say asian, we usualy mean “someone from East-Asia” or “someone whose family comes from East-Asia.” I try to avoid the term because it has a bunch of different potential meanings.
To me, the fact that Goku’s actor is white isn’t as annoying as the fact that he looks suspicously like Chris Wylde. It’s like Goku can’t save the world because he’s too busy smoking weed and not working.

ParticipantWhile the term “Asian” can encompass a much broader group of people than just East Asians, I think it’s generally assumed that when you say “Asian,” you’re referring to an East Asian. It’s not incorrect to call someone from Israel an Asian. However, normally people would refer to a more specific region in Asia, e.g. in the case of Israel, the Middle East.
Actually, this is taken right off of one of dictionary.com’s definitions of Asian (click here to go to the page):
Quote:
Usage Note: Asia is the largest of the continents with more than half the world’s population. Though strictly speaking all of its inhabitants are Asians, in practice this term is applied almost exclusively to the peoples of East, Southeast, and South Asia as opposed to those of Southwest Asia—such as Arabs, Turks, Iranians, and Kurds—who are more usually designated Middle or Near Easterners. Indonesians and Filipinos are properly termed Asian, since their island groups are considered part of the Asian continent, but not the Melanesians, Micronesians, and Polynesians of the central and southern Pacific, who are now often referred to collectively as Pacific Islanders. See Usage Note at Oriental.February 10, 2009 at 1:52 am #70656YouWinGameOver

I am from Israel and I consider my self Asian, Middle Eastern, African and eastern European.

ParticipantYeah, but I’m talking about what people call themselves, not what they consider themselves. How many Israelis go around calling themselves Asian? I haven’t met a whole lot of them, but every one I’ve met has never said that they’re Asian. They mention the Middle East or just be specific and say they’re from Israel.

ParticipantAt the risk of repeating myself, I sort of think that Americans misuse the term “Asian.” We generally talk about Asians as people from East-Asia or people whose ancestry can be traced to East-Asia. This is flawed because 1) it ignores the Middle East, Russia, and South Asia and 2) it does not distinguish between those who were raised in Asia and those whose family originated in Asia. The last thing I want to do is insult a bunch of people (sure, sure) but I think it is wrong to refer to someone who was born and raised in the United States as Asian. A good example is Michelle Malkin, an American journalist whose parents hail from the Philippines. Whenever someone calls her “Asian” she is quick to point out that she is not Asian, but rather, American. She is no more Asian than I am European.
In short: Master Roshi is the most awesome character ever.

If you want to be politically correct, we should start referring to ourselves as North American because there’s another continent that contains “America” in it. If you don’t want to call East Asians “Asian,” which is the general use in American vernacular (possibly in other countries, too, but I’m not very familiar with that), then it’s incorrect to call yourself American. Even though the rest of the world uses the term to describe someone from or something related to the United States, it excludes Canada, Mexico, and all of South America.
In the case of the word “Asian,” countries found in western Asia, e.g. the Middle East, are not incorrect if they wish to call themselves Asian. BUT, like I mentioned earlier, they generally don’t and they refer to themselves as a descendant of whatever country they came from, or a subregion. We don’t call Mexicans or Canadians “American” although they technically are. They’re Mexicans and Canadians. People from Peru are Peruvians. They could call themselves Americans — just like YouWinGameOver can call himself Asian — but they don’t.
I don’t think people really talk about that because “American” has already been around for a few centuries already whereas the American usage (at least) of “Asian” is relatively new (I read that it became associated with Chinese and Japanese because they were the first Asian immigrants in the U.S.).

I still say it’s silly to call someone asian if they were not actually born somewhere in Asia (for the reasons stated above) but I’m not going to go all grammar-Nazi if someone calls Japanese or Chinese people asisn because it is technically acurate.
Oh, and the guy from the Dragon Ball trailer looks nothing like Master Roshi. It’s a bunch of crap.

Hehe, yeah. I agree. You have a point with all of that; I was just saying that it’s sort of understood by everyone that you mean East Asian when you say “Asian,” just as “American” is understood to be someone from the U.S.
I was expecting some old guy to play Master Roshi. Maybe they’re steering away from really old guys cuz of what happened to Dumbledore, LOL (original Dumbledore died and they had to get another one. I prefer the original). Haha, well, I’m not really serious, but well, you never know.
Chow Yun Fat is cool, but he’s no Master Roshi.
