SpectatorWell, epic fail for the country, but on the other hand, it’s somewhat adorable…

SpectatorI know that the olympics are about the athletes it has always been about the athletes but you cant say that they cant be penalized for competing in a place they don’t want to. It’s like every other time an Arab team refuses to play an Israeli team. If the athletes gave a *edited* about where they competed they would have boycotted the olympics as well.

SpectatorI don’t have anything against the athletes. I’ve seen plenty of Chinese athletes that gave mind-blowing performances. Those vaulters were awesome. Still, I consider anything provided by the host nation’s government (stadiums and the like) to be associated with them.
Anyway, I was watching the swimming events, and I saw the name “Japan” on one of the swimsuits. This got me thinking: why do all the outfits have the english versions of country’s name. I mean, the Japanese don’t call their country Japan, and they weren’t competing in an English-speaking country. Was there some sort of meeting where the athletes decided “english names only?” Did they flip a coin? Maybe I’m just thinking too hard about this.

So you support Russia invading Georgia, using air strikes on Georgia civilians, and all of that?I support Russia defending a providence that had been independent since 1992
death of civilians is tragic, and i dont like it, but i believe that Russia’s reasons are just.

If that’s the case, would you support the US invading parts of Canada if a few rogue elements there want it? How about parts of Iran that want to be free? You know if the US starting invading provinces of Iran there would be a massive international outcry and the UN would *edited* their pants.
This is a very slippery slope to defend.

Spectatornot every thread turns out like this, in fact it is extremely good that there are these few threads that do. Otherwise WCU would be boring as *edited*.

SpectatorHonestly, I dont mind it if Current Events/Political threads get a little firer. Adds a nice little spark to the forums and isnt nasty as long as people keep their heads.
As for civilian casualties in the Russian campaign, for lack of a better term, in Ossetia, anyone have links to news articles about the civilian casualties? Because I’ve yet to hear about them anywhere but here and I’m curious what kind of numbers we are looking at.
Also, watched a spot of rowing the other day where the US came in first after and a bit of the synchronized diving. It was pretty wild seeing just how in sync some of those pairs are and just how critical being just a slight second out of sync can be to the scoring. Anyone know if China took that one in the end or not, because it looked like they would.

SpectatorFYI master p… south ossetia has not been apart of georgia for 16 years
its not us going into canada because a small faction wanted liberation or freedom or whatnot… its closer to us going to kuwait because they got invaded by iraq
oh wait… that happened.
might i also point out the Philippines, Grenada, all of South America after ww1 & 2 and Israel
gg america for being a hypocrite
and i will agree its a slippery rope but the US has been walking it since it was created

So Georgia invaded and Russia went in to defend it? Yeah, that’s not quite how it happened…

might i also point out the Philippines, Grenada, all of South America after ww1 & 2 and IsraelNext time Russia defends the modern world from a tyrannical regime by all means let them do as they please with the spoils. First they have to get rid of their own regime which isn’t happening anytime soon.

and i will agree its a slippery rope but the US has been walking it since it was createdHow many wars have we started completely unprovoked. Careful now, Iraq was provoked by Saddam’s WMD program that was, in fact, real, as we have recently learned with the selling of his weapons grade-capable uranium he lied to the UN about.

Spectatorgod i love u masterp haha… now here comes the essay
i will stand corrected… the Republic of South Ossetia was not declared an independent nation by the UN but an agreement was made between Russia and Georgia allowing them to self govern. Georgia broke that agreement when the current government of Georgia was heavily influenced by unionist ideas. Russia had every right to go in and protect a providence that wanted freedom and when Georgia refused to stand down, it only makes since to use that big ol army they had to make the conflict stop
also… saying that the regime in Russia is “tyrannical” is biased and who is not to say in Iraq or anywhere in the world that the US is called “tyrannical” its all point of veiw
(Ephraim set me straight… and if thats what u meant… point rescinded lol)
again along with the slippery rope is the whole thing of provoked and non provoked. being provoked and not being provoked has always been a very thin line with the US(and many other countries for that matter) and i wont call it bad or good but there have been plenty of times that the US has sent “military advisers” to countries that served as a watch dog and protector of our assets.
i guess when it comes down to it, i dont like that Russia is all up in Georgia like that, but at the same time I hate how, as YouWinGameOver said, we tend to be a world police. personally im an isolationist i guess u could call it. i think it would be better for the the United States to serve more as diplomatic party rather than anytime an issue arises we send in troops and cause (in my opinion) bigger problems down the road. in the long run i think it would be better to solve the issues we have pressing inside our country rather than spread our money round the would
AND (lastly) while i dont like the fact Russia is all over Georgia, i still think that its important to stand up for nations who wish to be free politically and ideologically, which is the main reason why I Support Russia.
now bash away

I was watching some olympic boxing the other day. It was totally different from the boxing I normally see (nobody fell over). Would anybody happen to know how the boxers get points? I think it has something to do with the big white spots on their goves.
