SpectatorSorry to derail but I have to inform the peoples of WCUG of their error.
There was a lot of bashing in the first part of this thread by people who themselves don’t know where Star Wolf originated. It sure wasn’t Star Fox 64.
Star Wolf was originally created for Starfox 2 on the SNES. It wasn’t released because some moron at Nintendo felt it wouldn’t do well if released so close to the debute of the N64. Starfox 2 is available in beta-quality ROM format and is a hell of a good game by SNES standards. The non-track based, “all range mode” 3-D combat everyone loved in Starfox 64 was used extensively in Starfox 2, in fact there are only a handful of places in the game that put you on a track.
Starfox 2 was also the original debute of “The Great Fox” and it’s use as the team’s carrier. Unlike in Starfox64, the carrier actually serves a purpose in Starfox 2 and controlling it is part of the gameplay.

SpectatorNice catch, MasterP.

SpectatorStar Wolf may have originated in Star Fox 2, but their introduction to the general public was in Star Fox 64. It was many years after 64 that 2 became available to download. Of course, if the business people at Nintendo had their way, nobody would ever download any of their propery, no matter how obscure it may be. They’ve always been bulldogs.
Edit: 200th post! Hooray!

SpectatorTo my understanding, the alpha ROM has been available since shortly after the cancellation of the game in 1995, 2 years before the N64 version was released. The patched version is much newer and I’ve only had a copy of it since 2004 but I know it was available for several years before that, probably around 1999-2000.

SpectatorForgive me I don’t patroll the internets looking for ROMs, I agree with Ephraim on this one. What the general public knows is what counts, if he was created in a game that was never released until ROM form. I mean hell I didn’t even have a computer until my freshmen year of high school.

Spectatori’d wanna see james bond or joanna dark make an appearance on smash bros., but that’s just me
February 12, 2008 at 12:05 pm #36730TrebuShae
SpectatorNintendo doesn’t really have any rights to James Bond… just games about him. So that’s probably a never.
Joanna Dark would be cool, though…
OH! And Lucario = Mewtwo ver. 2.0.

SpectatorI believe the current rules for Smash Bros eligablitity are:
1. They must have appeared on a Nintendo console at least once.
2. They must have originated in a video game.
That means no anime characters and no ninja turtles.
Oh, and Sheik is cooler than Zelda.
February 12, 2008 at 3:56 pm #36761Cacophony
SpectatorBut with Dark licensed to Microsoft the chance of them ever being able to use her are nil. That’s right up there with all the people who demanded that Master Chief be in Brawl. At least with Snake, he started on Nintendo and then has Twin Snakes in his favor. And Sonic is Nintendo’s now that Sega is Nintendo’s.
Oh, and Mewtwo’s taunt rocks. Don’t hate Mewtwo.
February 12, 2008 at 4:07 pm #36763Ephraim
SpectatorAnd now to prove how nerdy I can be. Snake didn’t start on Nintendo. He started on the MSX. Metal Gear was later dumbed down and put on the Famicom/NES. This version sucked. You didn’t even fight a Metal Gear.
February 12, 2008 at 4:16 pm #36765Cacophony
SpectatorRight. The Super Computer battle. I’d completely forgotten about that. Still though, better chance than the one PD game on the 64. Plus Kojima has always been friendly with Iwata and Co.

SpectatorLet me rephrase that: current licensing rules prevent Nintendo from putting any of the Perfect Dark characters in any new game. They can do whatever they want to the one they are in but cannot reuse them without permission. XBOX users are in the same boat with Goldeneye on their version of the Virtual Console. Not even the game creator can re-release the original Goldeneye game, even in a different format, without Nintendo’s permission, which they will never get after betraying them like they did.
Licensing rules suck for the users but they are put there for this very reason.

I was just listing the developer’s rules for character eligability in Brawl. It goes without saying that they would also have to obey legally binding contracts. Strangely enough, under these laws, Battletoads are not eligable for inclusion, but Altair is.

SpectatorTriple posting because I am wonderful.
Is it just me, or does it look like Mr. Game and Watch is flipping everyone off towards the end?
