SpectatorThe LAN was very successful. Mario Kart was a great change of pace and the free play was lots of fun. The drum controls in Rock Band were really cool. Still, I have a few thinks to bring up:
1. There is a problem with the Smash Bros Tournament and I am not the only one who has noticed this. The Pros have been given waaaaaaaaaaay too much control over the way it is set up. I talked to a few of my friends who claim the Pros were allowed to alter the preset brackets so that most newcomers were pit against Pros. It was a way to weed out the new players. One of my friends quit in protest. I’d venture a guess that the proffesional Smash Bros players have become the most hated people represented at the LANS. There is no shame in being beaten by a better oppenent, but when a group of ridiculously cheap obsessives who only come to play one game, abuse every glitch, and generally *edited* people off are allowed free reign over a major tournament, we have a problem.
Bottom Line: If you play for any reason other than fun, you deserve to be kicked in the head. I’m glad wavedashing and many other glitches have been fixed in Brawl.
2. Introducing Ephraim the Hippie! I noticed that we generate a lot of empty cans at our events. I say it would be a good idea to set up a few containers where used cans could be thrown out, then recycled. Maybe it would make us look responsible. What do you guys think?

SpectatorKranchan aka Stephen Juhlin won Wii bowling.

SpectatorThere were not any “pros” at the smash tourney. Also all of the competitive section of smash bros uses glitches and if brawl has some they will be used there as well. Most of them take skill and for the most part those players would have done well without using them and from what I saw there were very few glitches used, Wave dashing being the main one which isn’t as bad as halo two was with bxr, double shot, bxb and so on. So calm down its just a game. Also overall alot of people come to lans to have fun but others come to have good competition. Don’t get mad at someone for wanting to be challenged.

Spectatori’d love to congradulate the console admins and such for getting us (the people not at the lan) speedy results… where as i’m sure next month i’ll see who won css…… POST THE *edited* RESULTS AND STOP DRINKING BEER AFTER THE LAN THAT’S YOUR ONLY JOB@!!!!! but drinking beer doesn’t hurt, or other things, go wild… BUT DAMNIT I WANNA KNOW WHO I HAVE TO EAT NOW BECASUE THEY WON AND GOT COOL PRIZES!!!

I will not play against someone who bases his entire game strategy around what glitch he can use against what character. If the only people who consistently win at our LANs have to use glitches to do so then what’s the point of even having the tournament?
As to the “come to have fun” aspect, go play someone who bases his entire game around glitches and tell me if it’s fun.

These guys are pros and refer to themselves as such. Your post did not address the main concern–they were allowed to alter the brackets. I like the way my friend described the situation: “At this point, the only people who can beat the pros are other pros. Its like there is this elite group of people who play the game as a way to pat eachother on the back.”
February 17, 2008 at 4:35 pm #37161Akuzan
SpectatorThey don’t call themselves pros…I know the guy that one. He is by no means a PRO I know the best SSBM player in NC and he is the best person I have ever seen and no one at the LAN could hold a candle to him… much like me against Final Boss.
MasterP….I played halo 2….one of the biggest glitch fest games ever I know what it feels like so don’t assume that I have never played against people that only get kills or play with glitches. Most of them are fairly close to instant kills in h2 or give you a very great advantage in killing multiple people while almost being dead.
None of the SSBM glitches will give you instant or semi-instant kills. They give you an advantage but not a severe one.

SpectatorEphraim, I shouldnt have to do this, but I am going to anyway because I know a few people are still upset.
Before you start name calling and making accusations, at least hear both sides of the story. Unlike your friends who can only ‘claim’ things, I can provide hard evidence. Here is a picture I took of the brackets.
As you can see, only two names were switched. The person whom I think you are referring to that was excessively mad about this actually came up to me during the LAN very angry about how rigged the brackets were. He ended up all the way in the semi-finals (#8 Dekoa). Did he leave out that part when talking to you?
Also, you use the description of “cheap obsessives who only come to play one game, abuse every glitch, ect…” in a negative manner. Do you not do that in any game? In football, don’t they spike the ball to waste time off the clock? In basketball, don’t they intentionally foul during the last seconds in order to force a change of possession? In a serious CS match, wont you lose advantage if you don’t always have at least 1 AWPer on your team? Lets face it – to be competitive in a game, you HAVE to be cheap and abuse everything you can. If you don’t, you will fall behind to others who do. If the game is so broken that it is impossible to beat a certain strategy, then don’t play it; as it stands, though, Smashbros and every other game at our LAN is able to handle that kind of gameplay and still be competitively fair.
The thing is that with fighting games, it is much more noticeable when someone pushes the game to the limit (Leg-sweep in mortal kombat, anyone? Strong-low in street fighter? Wavedashing in smashbros?) because there is nothing else to focus on other than the players themselves. All eyes are on your character alone, so if you do 20 of the same attacks in a row it is easy to see and is incredibly frustrating to the other player.
You also say this, “Bottom Line: If you play for any reason other than fun, you deserve to be kicked in the head.”
My response is that, no, I am not playing “just for fun” at a LAN. I am playing to take the #1 spot and will do everything legally in my power to win. Now, catch me outside the LAN or in a friendly match after/before the tournament and you will get a different, more friendly philosophy. But, when the lights go off and the real matches begin, it’s all business.
A well ran tourney on a balanced game will have the best players finish the highest consistently, and I feel that the top three players did take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at this LAN. A little known fact at this LAN is that Angel (the winner) was from App. I had never seen the guy before in my life, and therefor had no idea he was ballin before the brackets were made. It just turned out that he beasted through and made it to the finals.
And finally, even though wavedashing is indeed out of Brawl, there are still many many advanced techniques that have already been discovered. You can find the ever-growing list of them here http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=142139

SpectatorAnd on what MasterP said about not playing in the smash tournaments anymore-
I, too, obstain from tournaments (PC, though) because I know I will just get dominated. I’ve been trashed so many times at CS:S and DoD because I didn’t know absolutely every mechanical thing about the game, that it’s embarrassing. I’m not complaining (in fact, I have even more respect for people who can do that) but I just want you guys to realize it happens for every game played at a high level, not just ssbm.
February 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm #37170Thor
Spectatorjust like halo 3 if you have to use the n00b combo to win then so be it i hate it when it used but i even resort to that if thats what it take to win.

SpectatorKranchan won Wii Bowling. Matt won Mario Kart 64.
And I’d like to point out that no one at the LAN playing SSBM is a pro. These claims make me giggle, but I’ll say no more because I didn’t show up until after the tourney.
Also, if you have any questions or discretions on these tournaments and how they’re set up you can take them up with me, as technically I was the one who was supposed to be making sure the Nintendo tournaments went well. Matt was just trying to do what he could on short notice since I got sick, so I think people should just be a little more appreciative of who makes an obligation to keep the LAN tourneys going on time.
Thanks. <3

These are just the console results, PC results aren’t posted yet
.By the way, most of our tournaments are ran off of the guidelines and rules of other tournaments as they are fair and they are successful.

Have you ever heard of sportsmanlike behavior? The guy who beat me did so because he was better, not because he was cheap. I have no problem with that. What I do have problem with are folks who I see twice a semester showing up and talking about how Smash is their life and how they are better than 99% of players out there. Then they have their characters flip around the stage like a jackass so nobody can catch them. Wavedashing is a completely unethical form of gameplay and a large number of people I talked to at the LAN agree with me.

The way I see it, we have a small group of people who show up at LANs for the single purpose of showing off with annoying, unsound methods and a second group who defend them. This defense only leads to bad feelings among club members. Quite a few dedicated club and LAN attendees are getting weary of rules which bar most stages and items, yet allow the most ridiculous methods for winning.
Also, how the hell are these people not Pros? They keep bragging about how much money they make at tournaments.
February 17, 2008 at 5:55 pm #37178TrebuShae
SpectatorLook, I know people who are pros at Smash. They have nothing to brag about. There is one guy here who has repeatedly came up to my dorm just to brag and beat Matt and I at the game, but I’m not going to plaster his name on this forum because that’s just unnecessary.
So what if they’re bragging about winning money? Do you think that means they really are? They brag because they have nothing better to do here. If someone randomly shows up at this school who is fairly well at the game, they flock over to that person. If they were “pros” like they claimed to be, they wouldn’t even show up at the LANs because they’d be in actual ranked tournaments.
The best thing to do is just to have fun and simply ignore those kinds of people. I know braggarts are really annoying and all, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s more fun just to take pleasure in the fact that they’re making a good time into a stupid competition to prove themselves to people who couldn’t care less.

SpectatorThis argument about being ‘cheap’ has been done millions of times before by millions of other people, most noticeably by the famed Sirlin. I suggest you bop on over to http://www.sirlin.net/ptw/ and read his articles on playing to win, if you havn’t already. Maybe it will change your stance a little bit.
February 17, 2008 at 6:36 pm #37191Ephraim
SpectatorI think that the debate has become as productive as it possibly can. Anything from this point on will only lead to hurt felings. I am not trying to offend, just discuss a valid issue. A growing number of people are upset because of the methods allowed in the Smash Bros tournament. There is no reason to become angry about this; just consider it. Also, it is fruitless to argue about what people who use these methods should be called. To sum up my feelings on the topic: Wavedashing is not an ethical form of gameplay. If it were then why would the developers have removed it? Wavedashing is to Melee what spawn camping is to any first person shooter.

SpectatorEphraim, the article Zap posted is very good. I recommend giving it a read through.
February 17, 2008 at 7:03 pm #37196Kuros
SpectatorI could have swore I posted in this thread earlier. One of the server rules are posted as follows: Map exploits are not allowed (sky-walking, boosting through floors, leaving the playarea of the map, planting in the water on de_Inferno). This has been reworded (I have no idea why AHEM Falcon) from “Exploits of any kind are not allowed”. What I don’t understand is this: Why do we allow exploiting in the console side of the club but not the PC side? I believe that the console people need to sit down and have a serious talk about this. What are the exploits in Smash Brothers and which ones do we need to place a ban on? It won’t be an easy discussion, but something needs to be decided before the next LAN. Get this done.
February 17, 2008 at 7:16 pm #37197Thor
SpectatorJust simply all i can say is speak up about it before the game starts as well, i mean as we were going to start the Gears tournament i called out no Crab Walking which is an exploit that allows the person to run at full speed and still shoot the gun and everyone understood and didnt exploit the bug. Thats all i really have to say on the topic of expoits.
February 17, 2008 at 7:54 pm #37204ZaplinG
SpectatorI can understand why people who are unfamiliar with the game would think of things like wavedashing, teching, and l-canceling are so broken that they need to be banned and will be glad to defend my opposite position to the rest of the console people at a meeting or something.
February 17, 2008 at 8:06 pm #37205TrebuShae
SpectatorOkay, look: WAVEDASHING DOES NOT MAKE YOU WIN THE GAME. I wavedash on accident half the time. It is VERY different from what is considered cheating in most PC games, I assure you. SSBM’s physics engine has many many problems and I don’t even consider it a real fighting game. Wavedashing is simply a glitch in the game that allows you to slide across surfaces, and can often cause you to even fall off the edge and lose a life. It does not make you a better player whatesoever, nor is it cheating. I am willing to argue this on the console side. Why? Because I don’t wavedash and can still beat what some of you like to call “pros”.
I am not trying to insult anyone but I think some people are getting a little heated over something that can be easily resolved, but not by “he said, she said” methods. I think its simply a matter of those who are arguing need to actually look up more on what they’re arguing about. It makes things go much more smoothly.

SpectatorKuros: bump to http://www.wcugaming.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8133
and my thoughts on exploits are this: if everyone is equally aware of them and equally alright with using them, then it’s all good fun, but when someone pulls an exploit off and the other guy has no clue that it was there, then that’s not good
February 17, 2008 at 8:18 pm #37208Fascist Flakes (Jagr)
SpectatorWhy are we making such a big fuss over this? The tournaments are currently run under the rules and guidelines of other tournaments ran for the game. SSBM, Halo, etc are played at a level that certain people call techniques, tactics, etc an exploit. There are PLENTY of exploits in BOTH games that are classified as cheating and NOT allowed. I realize that we aren’t MLG, we aren’t a HUGE player base tournament, and that we don’t need to follow guidelines and rules from other tournaments and leagues to a T, but they are the bar and they are the ones that typically set the rules for tournaments.
All of this discussion is because two people who don’t exactly play the game competitively are complaining because people who do play the game competitively are better than them and use techniques and tactics that other people view as “cheap” and then subsequently point as “exploits”.
Wavedashing is quite possibly the ONLY technique that can be viewed as an exploit, it wasn’t meant to be part of the game but it also isn’t a huge gameplay change.
February 17, 2008 at 8:22 pm #37210TrebuShae
SpectatorI thought this all started over “rigged” brackets… interesting.
February 17, 2008 at 8:22 pm #37211Oh Malley
Spectator…..I doubt this conversation should’ve been started in the tournament results thread. Ephraim, next time you have an issue like this, please post a general thread about it separately, or if you have issues with a small group of people or even an individual, TAKE IT TO PM.
But I suppose since this discussion has come full force, I’ll provide my input.
As far as the “glitches” in SSBM goes, well… I can’t make an official judgment or anything like that.
All I can say is that these glitches have become integrated techniques in the top circuits of competitive smashing. It’s not “cheap” in that regards since it doesn’t become a constant spam of damage deal techniques, but rather ways to gain and maintain some control as well as move around the level. The same thing happened to Halo 2 at the exact same time. SSBM and Halo 2 were the two titles for MLG’s circuit a few seasons ago. And you saw the same amount of use of glitches, ones that are easy to execute, take very little practice to master, and can easily to integrate into for a few situations.
Need I remind you of what they are?
BXR – Melee, followed by a rapid successive headshot.
BXB – Double melee. Just slightly faster than if you pressed B twice.
RRX – Double shot. It fired two bursts in rapid succession, but caused the gun to reload, even though the animation did not queue.
By the way, I doubt wavedashing is anywhere near what spawn camping is. Wave dashing is a map movement technique.
Spawn killing is mostly luck. Whether it be bad or good. However, you can manage spawns and have weapon and map control, but it’s not that hard or impossible to break.
I leave it to the community to make an official decision regarding the next LAN’s tournaments to make rulings on such. The decision will be announced to the public and if they are banned, then a full and explicit detail of what these glitches and exploits are will be posted and pinned for reference.
February 17, 2008 at 9:00 pm #37216Ephraim
SpectatorI couldn’t care less about what the top tiers of competitive play find aceptable. Personally, I find these organizations to be silly and contrary to the very purpose of video games (fun). We are an individual organization which should base its rules upon common sense, not the rules of others. Cheap is cheap. Wavedashing does not give a slight advantage, but is so disruptive that it can win a match.
