so here is a question to the PC guys. So if me and a bunch of people who are hardcore console gammers came to a meeting and all voted for some random PC game that we liked to play and it took the spot of one or two of your usual games wouldnt you be mad? would you be like “this isnt fair b/c we are the ones who play these games competitivly and put the time we put the time into making these tournaments good.” The Console meeting was for those people who actually cared about what happens during the console portion of the LAN. I myself told atleast 4 or 5 people to come that didnt just for the fact that they themselves were just playing the PC games. Now i get where you are comming from about Votes at the main meeting but honestly i know most of the console gamers didnt vote for the PC games to be played b/c its not a big deal to us. But when the console stuff comes up the PC players just voted for casual games that yall probably dont even play that much. So how come when we want to put the games we all decided on at the console meeting that no PC people were at we get yelled at? We all just are thinking about what would be the most fun for our type of gamer.

I personally voted for games that I would play at the LAN; the PC people don’t have their own meetings to decide console games so I’m not sure your point? Unless you have a problem with people voting that aren’t in your group of hardcore console gamers which isn’t fair to more casual players either. Also PC gamers have to bring their PC, console gamers don’t necessarily have to bring anything so why would a console gamer vote for a pc game if they CANT play it?

I guess that we just don’t care about casual gamers anymore.

And as far as the polls go, it could be put on the registration sheet and made manditory that way we actually get mroe imput for the LANs.

You wont a real response. If you make it mandatory you will get garbage responses. The ones that really care are the ones what will leave feedback weather its mandatory or not. If you would like me to look over the questions i’d be happy to. I piratically have a minor in conducting public surveys. The hardest part is phrasing them in a non bias manner. If you do a bubble poll, the only real analytical type feedback is using a 4point forced choice likert scale. However bubble polls, are alsways subject to random guessing. I would recommend the open ended type questions. Just shoot me a PM if you want.

Mandatory won’t work people want to be able to have choice and not feel obligated by things. It makes something more enjoyable when you don’t HAVE to do it. I would hand them out as people are leaving, this way you can ask “what do we need to do differently” rather than “what do you want done.” You are much more likely to get answers that aren’t tailored to individual players this way. You’ll get more of the same responses over and over if there was a problem that was really significant.

kuros makes valid points. only thing i would say is to not do them at the end. at the end its alsways panic and kayos from people packing up and stuff. I’d say do them 1/2way through, hand them out when people arnt occupied by something else. When they have time on their hands they will typically full them out respectfully.

…Also, something that hasn’t been explained is why Wii Bowling was thrown out when all it takes is a single projector, which we already have more of at this LAN due to the Dell sponsorship. It also had more votes than games being played….

Please show me where it was stated that Brawl was thrown out.

    Wii BOWLING. My bad.

My point remains the same. It’s not like it’s hard to host or bracket for and turnout has yet to be poor.

And ditto to Nickname’s point. For PC games, what we vote on at the meeting is what we play, barring a tie in which case the HISTORICALLY better pick usually wins out. We don’t hold seperate meetings as there is no need to discuss things further as we already have a good idea how our stuff is going to run.

If console gamers REALLY want to play PC games feel free to nominate and vote for the ones you want but keep in mind you are expected to actually play them at the LAN. When I voted for Mario Kart and Wii Bowling I had every intention of playing them as their tournaments are quick and easy to fit in between PC games but if they aren’t tournament play what’s the point?

like i dont mean any disrespect or anything. Im just trying to explain where we are comming from. And i know most of us are bringing our own TVs and Systems to this LAN btw. But honestly is there such thing as a casual gamer? i dont know one single person who doesnt take the game they play seriously. The games that are in the LAN right now are all the main games that are played on campus. dont get my wrong i would LOVE to see mario kart in the LAN i love it but even though im not going to be in the SC4 or GH3 tounrey i know more people would want to be.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Maybe most of the 15 of you at the meeting are but the 50-70 others aren’t.

When it comes to consoles, there are many more casual gamers than hardcore. I am a casual console gamer. How serious I am about winning has nothing to do with how often I play console games or how good I am at them. Casual means you don’t play often, hardcore means you play all the time, skill level isn’t necessarily based on gameplay time. I won the Day of Defeat Source tournament twice in a row having never played in an open server before the first win and only twice before the second, this makes me a casual gamer at that particular game.

How long have you been on campus? Being a senior I can tell you the majority of people on campus play Halo3, Mario Kart, and Smash Brothers. Maybe guitar hero is fun by yourself but it’s a major turnoff when you watch someone play on expert at the LAN when you can barely manage hard. You know you’ve lost before you even play and that’s not the sort of game we need.

    I’M A CASUAL GAMER:)!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at the console meeting and I kinda wish I had been paying attention, it was kinda hard to hear, but that’s another story.

From my experience, it is very beneficial to have small little games like Wii Bowling and/or Mario Kart. This gives the people who aren’t expert gamers a chance at winning something. I can’t play games cause I’ll be sitting at the door taking yalls money, but when I could play games, i was so happy that Mario Kart 64 was there cause I felt that I had a chance against some of the better gamers.

As for Wii Bowling, it’s a fun game that you can just pick up and play. You don’t have to practice for it or anything. Yeah it gets annoying when people are not there when it is their turn. That’s why, you find a way around that issue. Don’t get rid of Wii Bowling because “we always have to wait for the PC people to take their turn.”

yea i agree with you about that. I know they are having those games for free play though. idk i just think that yall are making it more of a big deal than it is about the games that are going to be played. next time just go to the console meeting

I’m going to say this as clearly as I can because I’m done with consoles for the time being; votes for LAN games are supposed to be held at the general meeting where attendence is at it’s highest. This is the way it’s always been done. If you have no intention of honoring a vote held at the general meeting, don’t waste everyone’s time holding one at all. Just have your own seperate meetings and decide things the way you did this time. Keep in mind that your meetings will be smaller and you will get much less input on how things should be, both of which occured. You’ll end up playing games that YOU like but the 50-70 others may not.

The point being made here, the one most of you keep missing, was that you arbitrarily overrode decisions made by popular vote at the general meeting. This is something that isn’t supposed to happen unless you have historical evidence to back up the change. In this case, you do not.

What you are doing is segregating the gaming club into two different sections. You need to realize that you are part of a bigger organization and that the overall organization is the law. Think of Walmart where you have a department manager and a store manager. Store wide policy overrides department policy and the store manager’s word is law over the department managers. Consoles are a department of THE GAMING CLUB. It’s not the console club and it’s not the PC club. Both are sections of a larger piece and both must adhere to the rules that that larger piece has put into place. The votes at the general meeting are THE LAW. YOU CANNOT OVERRIDE THESE VOTES BECAUSE YOU WANT TO OR THINK IT’S BETTER. Your job at this point is to cater to the games that were voted upon AT THE GENERAL MEETING.

I’m just wondering why there is a need for a casual game tournament. Again, it’s not like we’re banning the game entirely. We still want it there. But whatever, I’m sure for now we’ll revert everything back. I think we can add in the SCIV tournament, for variety and to help induct a PS3 tournament. Also, we discussed it, and adding one more tournament won’t be a problem if we stick to schedules.

First off using the whole we dont have enough copies *edited*, dont give that when I brought up soul caliber and if we had enough copies the only response I got was well its 2 ppl per tv so it shouldnt take long. Last time i checked Wii bowling and mario kart had 4 ppl at a time.

Second I left that meeting early bc I was upset at some of the stuff said about making a console club or making the computer gamers go to another room, and dont even try to play it off as some joke because the manner in which it was said was dead serious. Yeah I get upset with how we get shafted on space and power bc of them I mean hell we are a growing section and we need more room, you dont need a whole table for a laptop, people inthe console area are sitting on top each other during tournaments.

Mainly why mario kart and bowling where taken out is because they are majority voted on by PC gamers, where that is not a bad thing, but when you turn comes up please be ready to take it. Its been on more than one occasion that tournaments have been held up by the person not being there. Also on the other hand we had a discussion about players not being ready for their turn in Halo 3, Cod4, ect. Did we wanna blame this on the PC players to or just admit that it doesnt matter if they are PC or Console, either way ppl arent always going to be ready for their turn. Having more control over the mic was a good idea but i remember in previous lans we had all the access we wanted short of having it right there in the Console area.

Hell maybe I have no right posting anything about the console section, i mean *edited* i barley touch my xbox so i guess im not hardcore. Im a CASUAL player. OMG i used teh C-word. So for me Halo, Gears, CoD4 i will be playing as a casual player and they are a casual tournament just like Bowling and Mario Kart which i enjoy just as much.

We can always address the issues of space during setup. If the consoles need more room, there’s absolutely no reason we can’t move some more tables over. :)

    Who said that?

If we are not careful this club is going to end up with a very huge divide between console and PC gamers. Every LAN event I’ve been to I have played both console and PC games. I remember a few where I have brought my XBOX, Halo 3, GH3, Controllers, Guitar, Wii games, Wii controllers, plus my PC and laptop to the LAN. Hell I also offered to bring my TV but it wasn’t needed at the time. I am also a CASUAL player, I play to have FUN (strange concept these days). ONLY PERSON I CARE ABOUT BEATING IS KUROS AND THAT GOES FOR ANY GAME, PC OR CONSOLE. <3 I don’t sit at home and play on my console every night. The point of the GAMING CLUB MEETINGS, is to bring ALL kinds of players together to decide what the MAJORITY wants to play FOR BOTH PC AND CONSOLE GAMERS. Its not for either side to go off and meet to decide what they would like to play and not think about the majority. There are a lot of lame *edited* PC games that they vote on that I really don’t care for, LIKE COUNTERSTRIKE 1.6 AND DAY OF DEFEAT OMG. During those times I usually end up playing console games, Wii Bowling, GH3, etc. I also let someone use my Steam account usually during that time so they can have a chance at playing some of the PC games, and have even let them use my computer to play the games. I think that the executives need to get together and work this out, as nothing else is going to get resolved bickering on the forums at each other.

We can’t fix problems if we don’t know they exist. I know math is hard for some but *edited* if you can’t use some common sense about plugging too many cords into an outlet. I will be handling power for the consoles at the LAN and it won’t be an issue again. If it goes out this time, everyone will be *edited*ed.

As for space, if you need more, TALK TO SOMEONE. If the PCs aren’t using all their allotted tables we will give you some but you do have to let us know you’re out of table space. If we don’t know it’s a problem we won’t try to fix it.

If the new console executives believe that they can form their own “console gaming club” it goes to show how far they think into things. How in the world are you going to pay for all that pizza? How in the world are you going to buy additional chips and drinks on top of that? Everything is set up and geared for the club as a whole so if consoles really think they can split, by all means go for it. You’ll come crying back after you can’t even get one LAN off the ground. I had already proposed reserving both the Grandroom and the Multipurpose room for the LAN events so that the consoles would have the entire Mutlipurpose AB room to themselves but was promptly shot down by the retards that currently run the club. I can understand how you are upset about space and I even tried to get you additional space as I just mentioned. If you believe you are getting skimped or whatever you want to call it, you need to be bringing these issues up in the executive council. As console Pres and Vice Pres you two count as executives so splitting the club when you actually have some say in how it’s set up is really stupid. You need to demand additional space and you need to make sure that you get that space. When I was president there was not a single thing that Oh Malley wanted that he did not get if it was in any way shape or form in my power. If the current staff is unwilling to compromise to help promote what is now the largest portion of the gaming club, you need to get some new executives in there. Don’t split, just reorganize and work with what you already have. I still believe that it would be in the best interests of the growth of the club for consoles to get the Multipurpose Room so that they have the space, networking, and power that they need to run their event in a more productive and FUN manner. If the executives can’t see this, then they are failing to meet the mission of the gaming club.

Besides, I don’t want to sit around and listen to somebody beat the *edited* out of the Rock Band drums for the entire frakking LAN event. :P Why not go down there where you can bang and sing all you want. You can dance to your hearts desire on DDR all you want and not one single PC gamer will *edited* about nor will they make you stop so that the PC people can hear. I would gladly walk from the Grandroom to the MP room to own up some Wii Bowling. I don’t see that massive long walk down a single staircase as being too terribly exhausting or inconvenient for myself and I’m sure others agree. Believe me, I’m all for the growth of the consoles and hell, I was a leading part of the initiative to unleash the consoles and give them more power and voice in the overall club. I’m not anti-console and I am on your side believe it or not. I just think that you need to make sure that you are adhering to the standards put in place at the general meetings (which take priority over console ones) and work with the general club instead of against them.

To solve the space issue, taking a look back on the issue..

    Dice said:

To make more space for consul. And this also adds more wall space for projectors… Its not hard at all to bump where the current power box sits for the PC area back more twards the center of the room. The cable will easly extend another 20feet.

We can make the UC fold up that collapsible stage, should not be any fees added.

By doing both of the above the Consul area just easly doubled. with no affect on the PC area.

    Win/win thank me later…

however, as kuros stated, we still have the noise issue with DDR and Rockband drums. The only way around the noise is to move to the MP room, or simply not allow it. Set up a consul fun night for these games ;)

I personally find it kinda sad that three pages of bashing, and complaining back and forth between the Consul and PC community came about because of the removal of two games, that I personally have no desire to play for reasons I choose not to disclose, that were from what I saw at the meeting, largely voted on by the PC guys which is fine I guess. I’ll admit I’m a big time 360 gamer, and I play ALOT of PC, but I almost know for a fact if I got a large number of people to vote to play Guild Wars as a PC tournament just for the simple fact of playing a casual tournament of GW, and it tied with a couple of the more popular PC games it would more than likely be tossed out, and not played at the LAN, and if you try to argue that it wouldn’t you’d be lieing to yourself and everyone in this community as very few people play GW on this campus, or at least the way I do.

I had my reservations with a number of things that were decided at the console meeting, but when I thought about it adding SCIV to the LAN would bring exposure to the PS3 (if you know me you know I hate SONY), which again would bring exposure to the club. I am also elected leader of a Multi-Platform Online Gaming Community that a number of people here on campus are members of called the Family, and as a result I have been trying to put together funds and T-Shirts to be a partial Sponsor for the Console side of the LAN, getting exposure of my own community and bringing more incentive for those who do come to compete and win. In general I find this entire arguement rather stupid and people argueing for the sake of having what they WANT, as opposed to argueing for whats BEST. I’m not saying that thats the case for everyone, but from reading everything and getting a general tone for the conversation that is what I’ve gotten.

This next part goes out to MasterP. I personally don’t know you, and tbh I really don’t care to, nothing personal. Have you worked in Sales of Electronic and Gaming Consoles, I know you do like numbers, and seem to have your grasp on typing into google and pulling them up, but have you actually worked and sold consoles and seen the general demographic each console sells to, and then think about who actually attends our lans. I worked in Electronics at Wal-Mart for 8 months, and even during the Christmas Shopping season. Yes Wii’s are #1 in Sales, but out of those Sales the general Demographic they sell to are Parents purchasing them for Young Children and for FAMILY CASUAL gaming, which accounts for 80% of Wii sales. The Xbox 360 and PS3 Reach out to the competitive Teen, College, and Middle Age Male Gamer, which is about every person that attends our LANs. So before crunching the numbers and tossing them out there please do a bit more in-depth research, and have a little bit more experience in sales.

    ————————————————

Oh btw, if they PC guys support the Console side of this community so much, why hasn’t one PC guys bothered to support my efforts on CGL to get more 360 games added for competition like I asked people so kindly to do over a month ago on the WCU page on their site. FTR don’t patronize me for the sake of your own personal benefit.

Ok ppl are talking about polls and demographics with games and so on and so forth. By voting at the meetings on these games isnt that taking a poll of a group with different tastes in games. Isnt that showing the demographic for the campus.

This thread is locked. The console president and vice-president should be posting a list of the games that will be played at the LAN hopefully soon.

If you wish to continue debating and arguing over the issues that occurred here, please start a new thread.
