SpectatorI’m not a giant computer noob but my weakness is in computer hardware. I am debating building a pc pretty soon but am not sure what I want to put in it. The only computer I have right now is the laptop I am on right now so I wouldnt mind a desktop that can kick some *edited*. I have no problem figuring out monitor and all external accessories but I need to know what to put in it. *Sidenote* I’m between a 22″ and 24″ LCD. The price difference is like $100 but seeing them side by side is such a huge difference *EndSidenote* For the computer itself not including accessories I think I want to spend $800-$1000. I want a good looking case with a clear side and all the LED fun (I’m a show off like that). I have none of the parts needed to start the build so I need everything needed for this build. So, WCU computer community, use your genius and BUILD ME A RIG!

SpectatorYour best best is lookon newegg or tigerdirect for “barebone kits”
they match CPU, Motherboard, case, ram, and powersupply… little work you got to do. pick your graphic card and just play legos when you get it in the mail

SpectatorHave MajorMajorMajor post his parts config… it was around that price range and it kicks arse.

SpectatorWow, super quick responses. Thanks guys. MAJOR. POST! Newegg is def the way I plan on going with this. Are barebone kits at all discounted because all the parts come together?

SpectatorI just added it and it’s about 1150. I like all parts but most likely would go for a different case. People that know more than me: how are these parts compared to others. Obviously my biggest concern where I know little is with CPU, Mobo, and videocard so how are these parts! Major, how do you like it!

SpectatorOk here is what I came up with for you based on the price level you put.
Of note: there is no keyboard or mouse in that build; I personally like products from ideazon and use:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…bmerc%2bstealth
for my keyboard. If that is too weird for you, then the G11 I picked for Major would work (here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…logitech%2bg11)
Mice are also opinionated but I guess the G5 is a pretty safe bet. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16826104076
Also some justifications on the parts I selected compared to Major’s build
The E8500 processor instead of the Q9300: That was a tough one but the E8500 is going to be faster in games TBH even if only slightly, plus its like $60 cheaper so I couldn’t go against the E8500. The Q6600 is actually the same price but it makes no sense to put that in there because its built on the older 65nm process and not 45nm (I.E. the e8500 runs cooler)
The rest of the differences (RAM and PSU mainly) were just because of price fluxuations and the two are pretty comprable.
If any of the people reading are like ZOMG a radeon??? Nickname is MAD!!!, please read this and this
Also I can email you the shopping cart if you give me your email.

SpectatorAlso, rofl at $120 in rebates.
Also forgot to mention that if you need more graphics performance (unlikely), you can add another one of those cards and run them in crossfire.
July 22, 2008 at 6:44 pm #52095Cacophony
SpectatorYou should put one of these in it:

Though you’ll need a power supply of roughly 1.21 jigawatts to keep it running.

I must revise my original configuration to accompany this.

SpectatorPlease tell me you aren’t adding 1000/(1*Nike)…
Tigerdirect = epic fail. Anyone who still buys from them doesn’t compare what they got to what the picture shows as the real part and the part on their website rarely look anywhere close to the same.
The last video card I ordered from Tiger was supposed to have a fan on it, instead I got a Geforce 6600 with a passive heatsink the size of the card. Tiger refused to take it back, stating I got the same part I ordered. The last motherboard I ordered was supposed to have raid and showed 4 PATA ports in the picture, the board I got didn’t quite have that many. Same responce from customer support.

SpectatorNice Build. Couple of questions. First off, what is the advantage of going the faster Dual core as opposed to a Quad core? And what is the advantage of an ATI card? Thanks for your help

ATI releases updated drivers EVERY MONTH; where is the lack of driver support exactly? And forgive me for looking at the two most important things when choosing a videocard: price and performance. MajorMajorMajor has the same card and says its epic win.

what is the advantage of going the faster Dual core as opposed to a Quad core?Good question. It all comes down to applications being designed as multi-threaded. Even now, many games and other apps only take advantage of one core. Recently, more programs have been designed to run on 2 cores instead of one, but there are VERY FEW programs that take advantage of more than two cores, especially relative to games. Thus, running 2 high speed cores at 3.16ghz with 6 mb total cache (3mb per core) will be faster than a quad core cpu at 2.4ghz with 8mb cache (2mb per core) in programs that aren’t designed to use more than 2 cores simultaneously. Of course there is always the flip side that programs designed to use more than 2 cores will be noticeably faster on the quad core, so that decision is up to you of course.
yousillyGoose said:
And what is the advantage of an ATI card?Quite simply, the price vs performance ratio for the new ATI cards is unchallenged by nvidia’s current offerings.

Something makes me think I’ve heard Nvidia linux support > ATI but I could be crazy.Hmmm… you may be right; I don’t have much experience with Linux so I can’t really comment on that, but make sure you do your homework (i.e. googling) first if this is a priority for you. An alternative to that ATI card would be something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16814130376, which offers similar performance, albeit at a higher price.

I love taking advice from someone that has used nothing but nvidia cards for years. We had two ATI cards. One got sold because it was crap and the other one sits in a media center that gets turned on once a month. The reason there are drivers every month is because the drivers are *edited* and need to be fixed every month. There is more to driver support than just releasing a driver. As a matter of fact, there have been several complaints at work (compliments of Kstone) about ATI drivers *edited*ing up dual monitor support etc. The nvidia cards run just fine. I’m not an nvidia fan boy by any means, if I see a better product, I’m going to buy it. I don’t consider myself to be a stupid person. I’m done with this. It’s obvious that you are now the all knowing with your new job in networking.
PS. I miss 3dfx.

I own an nvidia card as you know and I like it but ATI simply has nvidia beat in the $175-300 price point with the 4850s and 4870s.
As for the personal comment there, I would have said the same *edited* thing regardless of what my current job is and I don’t consider myself the “all knowing”, though clearly you know much more about everything than i do.

SpectatorThe last ATI card I owned had absolutely terrible driver support. I had to quit playing CSS for almost 6 months because my drivers crashed Steam.exe. How I couldn’t begin to explain but when I went to Omegadrivers the problem went away.
The frequency of driver released shouldn’t be any measure of greatness as a good driver doesn’t need updating. In the past, the more frequent the updates the more problems it had. Rare exceptions are for new features but at this point there isn’t much they can give you that you don’t already have, feature wise.

Either way you look at it both sides have their strengths, and both sides have their weaknesses. They are both releasing solid drivers, but neither side is perfect. Is either worse than the other? IMO, no.OK in response to MasterP: (lots of

Ok to close this argument let me just say that neither company has perfect drivers and any issues you experience are typically from a combination of hardware, configuration, and the software you are trying to run. Rarely do drivers react 100% identical on 2 different systems, from either ATI or nVidia.
2 years ago, I wouldn’t buy an ATI card, but things have changed and I think they have improved.

Spectatorso just fyi… my ATI card is amazing… no problems, just popped the cd in and everything runs amazing (ON VISTA TOO
)… i can play pretty much any game i want (UT3 and TF2 look sexy as hell) and it auto updates the drivers whenever i need it. maybe runs a lil hot but i dunno wat to compare it to (~130-150 F) now maybe some of you were abused as a child by ATI, but now they roxorz

Coming from a website that uses Leadtek and Zotac made Nvidia cards in their reviews, yeah ok, that’s reliable.

These are presumably not all of the incidents of this kind that took place in 2007, only the ones where the users submitted the information to Microsoft. How many HONESTLY click the submit button? Come on, be honest!
Also, that statistic came from a Microsoft lawsuit against other companies that stiffled the Vista launch. I doubt they are going to release data that makes themselves look bad.

My card was BRAND NEW when I bought it and it was only 1 generation old when I had problems with it. Even now it’s only 4 generations old, wtf you talking about?
And for the record, I hadn’t updated it when it broke and was still using the stock factory drivers that had been working for over a year. It not working is why I updated the drivers to the newest ATI release and it didn’t work either.

The problem AMD has is this whole Phenom thing… and they have so much invested in it there is really no way out. Plus ATI getting behind the ball with their last couple of generations of cards means it will take quite some time before they start making money again. I honestly don’t know how they can survive.
