Here’s what I think about Transformers in general:
Growing up, I never really watched the show much; it just didn’t interest me. Years later I dismissed it as an attempt to advertise achion-figures to little kids. When the first live-action Transformers film came out, I didn’t see it, because it combined a franchise for which I felt no nostalgia with a director whom I actively avoid. Still, I kept hearing people say it was awesome and also started to get a little bit curious about the animated 80’s film. When this new live-action film came out, I decided to give the whole franchise a second chance. Besides, I was bored and wanted to see a movie. So, I had the unique expierience of watching the 80’s film on dvd and Revenge of the Fallen within hours of eachother.
After seeing the 80’s film, I thought about what I had seen for a while. The visuals were creative and good-looking, but there was absolutely no compelling story or characters and it was obvious that the only reason there was a film was to get children to buy more toys and keep watching the show. I realised that I was correct before: Transformers is just not a good franchise. True, it is profitable and has an enormous fanbase, but that doesn’t make it good.
Still, I went to see Revenge of the Fallen. Everything I felt about the franchise was validated ten-fold. Within the first half-hour, I saw:
-A stupid dog-humping joke.
-The most annoying mother-character in the history of cinema.
-Two characters so stereotypical they were practically in blackface.
-A young woman in a skimpy outfit, strattling a motorcycle and thrusting her butt towards the camera.
-KABOOM!!
There were plotholes so big, you couldn’t get away with them on Gilligan’s Island. Everything about this film is excessive. It actually tops 300 in terms of sheer gratuity. It merges a franchise made entirely of commercialism with a director who has no idea how to tell a story beyond showing CGI representations of exploding buildings. I have tried to figure out why this *edited* is so popular. I have two theories: 1. Fans are so mesmerized by the pretty visuals that they are willing to ignore the pure, rampaging force of bad-film that the film spews at all times, or 2. Their nostalgia-filters are overruling their good sense.
This film is garbage, and if you like it, I reserve the right to laugh at you behind your back.
