The first Gaming Club meeting will take place Thursday, September 2 at 8:30 in the Cardinal Room of the UC.

The purpose of this meeting is to vote on Fall executives, potentially vote on constitutional revisions, and to vote on the Lan dates.

If anything else becomes relevant to the meeting, I will post it here.

Will there be an IRC/Conference call?

Make sure we already have dates reserved and that any constitutional revisions are posted well before the vote so they can be read and commented on.

Ugh, I wish I could come, but it’s so far away from Columbia. Maybe if I were still in Clemson.

Just to give everyone a heads up, at the next meeting there will be quite a few amendment changes . These include having all members and new members here out to sign a paper stating to uphold the constitution, and stating they know what is in the constitution; adds what I call the “babysitting” clause, basically saying a student is a representative of the club at all times, and if they dont act that way, they will be reprimanded, then have their membership status revoked (if they get reprimanded twice or more); shortening of the membership requirement from one year to one semester; and re-opening membership to all students for a two week time period.

This opening of membership status is for all students who have in the past been to atleast one Lan, and atleast one meeting. If this requirement has been met then the individual/s will have full membership status, and can run for executive positions within the meeting.

For any more details, or if you want to help me word these new changes *cough*ASHLEY*cough*cough*, then let me know.

Freezer has a few changes he wants also, once I have looked over them, I will post those on here as well.

I understand we got about twenty email addresses at Cat Fair. Are we going to send them invites?

    #104639

We should utilize our current membership base and send out anyone an email about the first meeting like we’ve done in the past!

90% or more of the execs we’ve had in the last 3 years never read the club constitution, they didn’t care. Even some past presidents didn’t know what was in it. You can dance around this issue all you want but at the end of the day you’d be naive to think that’s ever going to change. Those who are just here to play games can’t be bothered to do so.

Also, as I’ve said about a dozen times now, it’s possible to become a full member in 1 semester. Please go read the constitution before you sign the paper saying you know what’s in it

Please clarify on the membership “re-opening”. Does this mean you’re simply giving away dozens of memberships to people who show up to a single meeting? What about those who previously met the requirements but don’t know about this, are they just screwed? What about those who lose it in the future and want it back instantly by attending a voting meeting? Also, temporary amendents will not fly with SGA. Hope no one reports you…

Any amendments need to be completely written and finalized BEFORE the meeting starts and have the approval of our staff advisor.

“In order to become a member within the Western Carolina University Gaming Club, one must be a current student at Western Carolina University, attend a minimum of two official LAN events and at least half of the meetings every year”

That last part is the one that needs to be cleaned up, mitch. As its half within a years time, if we had 3 in one semester, and 5 the other, that would be 8, meaning the member need to come to 4, not just the 3 from the first semester.

Regardless of past presidents, this gives us a foot hold forward, regardless if anyone actually ever reads it.

This may sound stupid to all of you… but is there any way we can add something to the constitution defining.. “honorary members” who are member in name only and have no actual power.

Every president says we’re going to hold more meetings under their administration but we never do. It’s always 2 per semester, maybe 3 at the absolute most. I can’t remember a single year I’ve been here where the second semester had more meetings for general members than the first semester had.

Regardless of past presidents? That was a glaring indicator of how much people care. What good does signing something do if they still aren’t going to read it? It doesn’t mean they have to abide by it, nor does it prevent them from destroying it with contradictory amendments.

are non students allowed to run or be in this convention?

Non-students? No. They cut us away a year ago. Aside from constantly poking execs with e-sticks to make them do things and doing it ourselves when they forget or “get busy” we don’t really get to do much.

Btw, even if you had 3 meetings the fall semester and 5 the spring semester, if they went to all 3 meetings in the fall and then to the voting meeting in the spring, guess what? 3+1 = 4. That’s half. Meaning they might not be a member until the actual meeting itself but the benefits are the same as if they had gotten membership at the very end of the fall semester.

The only way that doesn’t work is if you have 2 meetings in the fall and 5 in the spring. I know I’m a negative nancy but there’s not a chance in hell you’d be able to pull off 5 general meetings in one semester, especially not after getting away with just 2 the previous semester. Need I remind you that some campus gaming clubs get away with 1 or 2 meetings… per year.

Yup mitch, you are being a negative nancy, but anywho, the main point of getting them to sign a document is so if we have ANY problems with a member not following the constitution, and we decide to take action against that individual, we will have a solid example (the document) stating they arent abiding by their agreement. Now, as for the non-student thing, we had no stake in that, it was SGA and campus staff that did. This is a student organization, and is student ran. I personally love all the thought and effort the Alumni give us, and next semester I will try to contribute the same, however, SGA, the one’s who tell US what to do arent so keen on the idea (hence the change).

And yes, it is possible for an individual to become a member in one semester, but hell, is it so much to ask that it just SOUND easier, and to make MORE sense, lord….

For the record SGA used to have very little say in what the club did, I think we should be on good terms with the SGA not have to bow down to them, Keith Corzine is the sole contributor to this club and so in the past we answered to him and SGA had to cough up the dough because of him, why or how that changed I am not sure. Anyways, guess that is just the boat we are in now.

We are the largest campus organization. Second to us is the InterFraternity Council. We all know how long it takes (and how hard it is) to join a fraternity.

Before Kazka, whenever SGA disapproved of something we did or threatened us we simply gave them the middle finger and went on with our business. We aren’t a run of the mill club, we aren’t obligated to go to interclub council meetings, and our primary funding comes from the Reslife general fund, something SGA has no control over. Very little of our budget is contingent on SGA approval and if you guys would stop *edited*ing in the alumnus’ cornflakes we’d gladly fill in whatever they refuse to give as punishment. Hell the last time they actually did something to us (cut our funding without telling us and leaving us with the bills) we simply told Keith about it and magically we got the SGA funding back. You can take that even further if you want, the last time IT threatened to take our server and switches away we made a call for donations from the online community and almost overnight had enough to buy a replacement server. Faced with the prospect of having no control or limited control, they chose to take what they could get and backed down. You can’t do that now because the online community’s been run off but hey console gamers are just as willing to donate, right? You guys love the club as much as the old PC players did, right?

Due to the changes in the last year it’s almost too late to avoid submitting to their authority. Almost, not impossible. You can still remain autonomous, but to do it you’ll have to get your hands dirty and you can’t be afraid to make enemies. Remember, anyone who hates you because your actions are contrary to what they desire cannot also have your best interests at heart. You’ll find in life that your own success and the desires of others are always mutually exclusive. You can only tread the line of appeasement so far before you are required to make a choice. Taking any part of the middle ground sacrifices your success, yet doesn’t accomplish the goal of appeasing them. They will never be appeased until you are entirely under their control. Walking the path of appeasement is like flying into a black hole. If you turn back in time, no harm done, but if you wait to long you’ll either be destroyed or consumed.

    Never agreed with Kip more!

however, don’t think all that should be public knowledge, and certainly not on the front page if you catch my drift.

Who is *edited*ing the the Alumni’s corn flakes? Who is “you guys”, cuz I for one advocate Alumni support. I even liked the whole idea of the alumni voting, but SGA didnt. What are we suppose to do, tell SGA to get over themselves?

I think we are forgetting one major concept….MORE people = more money = more control = no need for others…

just a thought…I have over 13 people just from my classes that I briefly talked to that want to join (today)…Still there has been no spread word sbout the club. Can a freshman run for a position? I am ready to get this going…so many people are bored and want to have fun as a COMMUNITY instead of kissing people’s asses and waiting for a green light to do things. There doesn’t need to be a gaming club to play games, club from my understanding is to bring people together to have fun. If someone is required to kiss *edited* the entire time to play a game with people when they can simply do it in their dorm, then there really is no point. Can someone get some flyers or something? set a date for a lan, get sponsorships, its not that hard…lol

As far as the club thing goes, I have been to 2 or 3 lan events and sat through a meeting, heard the stories, seen what can be done, and seen what hasn’t been done.

You’d be surprised just how often that works. They get mad and talk big but once the rage-high calms and they start investigating what possible harm they can inflict as punishment they realize it’s actually quite minimal. If they invent rules like no alumni intervention with clubs, something greeks get away with every year, either ignore them or skirt the issue entirely over to another subject. SGA changes rules more often than most college students change underwear so it’s likely you won’t hear about it again.

Life lesson about “problems” that don’t exist: The moment you acknowledge a false problem is the moment you become bound to fixing it. In the appeasement of fixing it you’ll create even more problems which you are automatically required to fix as well.

Two life lessons on one page… at this rate we’ll be creating black holes in no time. Maybe we can then fly our club starship into it and skirt the outer edge to land into a similar multiverse, possibly one in which SGA doesn’t exist. That would also solve the problem. There’s just that whole gravitational and subspace distortion thing, survival wouldn’t be… yeah ok, I lost you two sentences ago.

Back on topic, are the fliers for this meeting up?

Fliers there are fliers for meetings bc i havnt seen one since August of 2007 and while we are making these fliers lets put *edited* OFF SGA on them yeah that will work bc that will def tell them whose the boss. Yeah i like that idea getting right on it!!

Freshmen COULD hold a position, but they have to meet the membership requirements (the requirements we are trying to fix), and honestly, its not likely a freshmen would get a position over an upperclassman (true story), but it is possible. As for kissing *edited*, I sure know IM not doing that at all, but as a student organization, we HAVE to abide by certain standards, I mean, we ARE getting free stuff from the campus, they just want their investment protected, as should we. The only things we have really done that SGA was on us about was fixed the constitution, outlined membership status, and dealt the the “alumni issue”. Yeah, the alumni issue was stupid IMO, but the school sees us s a STUDENT organization. Even Kieth Corzine commented on how the alumni need to take a step back from the club, and give the current students their time (TOTALLY his words, not mine, so dont flame please…). The whole constitution thing was HUGE though. SGA was threating to disband the club, so we got together and fixed it. End of story.

About the flyers, its kinda hard to make them up and pass them out as we dont even have the new marketing executive. Thats what we are voting in the next meeting. I am also planning on setting up a table in Scott and Walker lobbies to try and intercept freshmen to get the name out more. As for sponsors, we are working on that already, and date for the lans, umm, kinda stated that at the begining of the entire thread x.X

We have also already started getting the name out to new people this year, such as at the catfair. During the cat fair, we got 23 interested individuals, and their email addresses, which I will be emailing about the meeting come tomorrow.

Like I said before, no one is kissing *edited* here. If you think going and signing up for free pizza, or reserving a room for the Lan is kissing *edited*, then by all means, you have a ways to go before you understand how this club is ran. It takes alot to hold an event with over 90 people, get the right funding, and go through the right measures. Nothing against new members, but this is why we have it set up so new members CANT run for positions. They need to see how things are ran, and truly get into the club to do that.

Well, apparently Mitch seems to think that Dustin, a freshman should be president right now, so maybe he knows something we dont. I’m sure the “lets just play games and not kiss *edited*” speech would surely win the hearts of the club over.
