renton, I’m not actually a mapper, but as a person who has used autocad a little bit and seen the mapping process, i would say that mapping and CAD is pretty similar. of course with mapping you are using valve hammer editor (which is free with CSS) and you are not only drawing and coming up with textures and models, but also dealing with light, sound, spawns, etc. so its autocad with a layer of complexity.
