Wow i quit so glad i was informed about this.
So the treasurer just compiled a *edited* near epic list of sponsorship opportunities and this new guy created fliers that rival the best we’ve ever put out and all you can do is troll Dice?
And you guys think I’m an *edited*…
I mean the thread is called “advertisement” and you’re the “marketing admin”, the least you can do is contribute something meaningful beyond a trite one-liner.

ParticipantWith games like this you can’t just say “HEY LOOK, LAN!” People want to see what kind of tournament it is without the hassle of going to find it.
SC2 Rules:
1v1
Blizz Maps
No Race Changing
Depending on entrants everything up until Quarters is Bo1
Bo3 in Quarters, Semis
Bo7 in Finals
If enough interest there will be a losers and a winners bracket, though due to time constraints, doubt it.
Prizes: ???
Sponsors (add the logos, etc)

For the tournaments, I can create different flyers that would go up at the places in Asheville. Also, if I were to post the tournament rules on the flyers I wouldn’t include WCU LAN but rather the specific tournament that flyer was for. If everyone is okay with that I don’t mind doing it but do see a benefit in posting that more so at LAN centers and Gamestops in asheville.

ParticipantOk so as Thor as mentioned… He hasn’t quit. He is still the marketing guy for the club. BUT we need to let Thor do his job. These flyers are amazing, and i think we should use them. But it isn’t up to just me. Also, because we have to have posters for all the games, we may not be able to do 50 of each. ANDD there are rules about when posters and flyers can be hung up. I think its within a week or 2 before the event that they can go up. So posting them around campus now will get teh gaming club a fine. BUT you can hang them around asheville wherever, and basically anywhere other than on campus. As far as the costs go, ill see what we can do as soon as possible and let you know a waffle.
Also, when i said a waffle should be the marketing guy, i meant for next semester. I doubt Thor is stepping down this semester. That wasn’t me saying anything about him quitting. sorry if there was confusion.

ParticipantKeep in mind that your goal is to attract people that AREN’T playing this all the time online as well. The first SC tournament we had was primarily made of people that didn’t play online often. When you start putting jargon on there like “blizz maps” the average player will have the same reaction I just had: “what the hell does that mean?” I mean yeah I inferred that it’s official Blizzard maps but when a potential player sees that and doesn’t understand you automatically turn them off to the tournament because they assume, weeks before the event, that it’s for pros only. No matter what you put out after that they’ll automatically ignore it because in their mind it’s a pros-only event.
I’d recommend putting “1v1” and “Official maps” but anything beyond that will be too daunting. The pros will see it and know that it’ll be a “best of” system and that you likely won’t be able to change races mid-match while the non-pros will also get the basic info they need to decide whether or not to play. Too much info risks cluttering the flier and they’re only going to see it for an average of 5 seconds unless they stop everything they’re doing to read it. The most important thing is that in those 5 seconds they get the game, date, and location. If they have to stop to get any of that they likely won’t.

Im sure these are great rules (i honestly have no idea cause iv never played) but everything needs to be run by Felix first for PC rules. Felix is the PC VP. So please check with Felix first before putting this on the flyers.

Keep in mind that it usually takes the print shop an incredibly long time to “get to” our fliers. They used to average 3 weeks to print them. We need to have them finalized and sent to be printed by this time next week to ensure that we get them in time. We may get them really quick, which would be great, but I’d rather them sit around and collect a little dust than not be ready in time.
Also worth noting is that I don’t think we’ve ever posted fliers on campus more than a week ahead of time. Anything longer and they would typically be torn down by RA’s or other clubs.

They are pretty good about getting them back within 24 – 48hrs of sending in the email.

Melee —7
Brawl – 11
Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Super Smash Bros. Melee will be hosted at LAN 2010.3.
Brawl won but says melee will be hosted think its a typo

ParticipantPrice check from the print shop should be free, if you need more than the 2XX free copies we get you’re much better off printing your own. You’ll save money. This is why we typically had 2 fliers, a color and a black/white. We routinely got free copies from random departments and black/white printing is always cheaper on your own printer than paying the school. You can still get free copies from department printers but it’s tricky and not really worth the hassle.
If the print shop in any way even pretends to want money from us go talk to Keith.
If you do need more fliers and the print shop wants more than a couple pennies per copy you’re better off driving to walmart and buying a black cartridge and some cheap paper and doing it yourself. Talk to Tallgeese in advance and he can let you record expenses and the club can pay you back.
—caution: off topic rant—
When they outsourced the print system it should have reduced the cost to print, at least that’s what the school thought using their imaginary form of business economics. I don’t think they realize that outsourcing a local service after you’ve bought all the equipment, and then losing all the equipment in the agreement, is a giant waste of money. Whoever had that bright idea should have their breeding rights revoked for extremely stupidity as should whoever in management stupid enough to believe that losing 100+ very expensive printers could, in any way, even remotely save money. Even if you saved $.05 per copy, if you lost a hundred $800 printers in the deal you have to print 1.6 million copies before you start saving money. Not only that but the company you outsourced to is a subsidiary of Ricoh, which has the highest per-page cost in the laser print industry and some of the highest energy usage rates. Read as: it’s not cheaper to the contractor so it won’t be cheaper to you. Congratulations, you saved a penny by paying 2. Most of what IT does behind the scenes is either stupid or textbook stealing, like how they had a 400% profit margin on Office03 and WinXP and a 100% profit margin on Vista, Office07, and Windows7. I mean I know screwing students is fun and all but charging students 5x more for something than you bought it for? Whoever set that up is the one who should’ve been calling the shots on this print thing. When I inquired about the pricing markups a few years back I was told I didn’t know what I was talking about. When I then pulled out a copy of the pricing schedule straight from the Microsoft agreement I promptly had my access to the staff network share revoked. I mean yeah I shouldn’t have had it to begin with but if you don’t like people finding and shining light on your dirty secrets you probably shouldn’t be doing shady crap to start with and if you suck at hiding stuff you definately don’t have any business doing that sort of thing. Giving an anal retentive student with a ton of free time access to the IT division network share is just asking for trouble. It’s also a violation of the WCU network security policy but hey who’s counting *edited* ups at this point. There’s just so many, like a certain IT department agreeing to universal student wages then hiring some at a higher rate than others already working there. Or ignoring missing money. Or paying students from one department using the wage allotments of another department. Or putting an IT repair shop with tons of virus infected machines on the same subnet as an entire IT department with no firewalls.
—end of rant—
Maybe ask Keith if the print costs really did go down with the new agreement (not a chance in hell) and if they did see if we can get more copies. The answer’s going to be no but it can’t hurt to ask anyway.

ParticipantYeah I realized that about 3 weeks after I moved back up there. No one was really interested in the screw ups or dirty laundry of anyone else but they loved to care about the occasional one I made. I mean my manager didn’t care at all that $120,000 was missing from our budget for the last few years or that another department had broke a contractual agreement with us but when it’s reported that I p2p’d in my apartment THAT’S suddenly a huge deal or something. At least there was evidence that the money was missing, what I do at my apartment in my own free time can’t be proven by anyone.

Participantthis is my statement. i am only going on what i think i remember, it could be true or false. so what i say may not be fact….
all clubs and associations were allowed to file and ask for a $10 card for printing. i think it was $10… ANYWAYS i dont think we applied for it. i want to say that we had a good reason for not applying, or that it was too late to apply for it when we found out. but again, i may be wrong.
so IF we have to pay for copies (which im sure we do) its because we didn’t get teh $10 card for copies. but again… i may be wrong. im not positive on that. honestly i wasn’t really told what funds we could apply for, and out of those which ones we did apply for. so that is sort of my fault for not asking more when the forms were being filled in.
BUT regardless, last time we made copies, i think we got 100 or more copies made, it only cost us a few dollars. so it wont be too bad of a cost regardless.
October 28, 2010 at 3:09 pm #106493Thor
ParticipantYeah we have been paying for our own fliers for the last year or so.
October 28, 2010 at 3:11 pm #106494MasterP
ParticipantKeith gave us free copies for years. As we’ve said for months now, we aren’t a typical campus club, we have the backing of Residential Living and can get pretty much anything we need to be successful.
Go talk to Keith and ask for free fliers. 99% chance you’ll get them. If you don’t go through Keith then yeah, you will have to pay.
October 28, 2010 at 3:14 pm #106495Thor
ParticipantI know we used to get them for free thats how it was when i was marketing in 07 but after my mandatory 1 semester break i got back and we were all of a sudden paying for them. Ill have daniel talk to keith about flyers and the posters. Ive also got information on mass school emails and putting a mini-flier in mailboxes today so going to check what the cost on the later would be. In addition i want to get table tents made, talk to the western carolinian about ad space, see if lmp will put up a slide during the previews of movies, talk to TV62 about a slide thing there, and posibly some sort of commercial which i think we have a youtube video somewhere but dont know the quality of it.

ParticipantWe got almost all of our Reslife sponsoring back when Brenton took office so I’d definately talk to Keith about it. If he’s willing to buy pizza for the event I can’t imagine 200 color copies being outside his price range.

i am not sure if the rules have been posted yet. but they have to be ran by the PC and Console VP’s first. So 2v2 and 1v1 stuff may not be correct. as of this past thursday i dont THINK felix has approved any rules for starcraft, and im not sure about other games. i know last lan that kazka was asking casey for help with xbox so if those rules are coming from casey they probably are right. but like i said i dont think felix has any rules set/approved yet.
Other than that, they still look fine and have correct info. i cant think of anything else that needs to be added.
