The problem is most of those 7 reasons are not only inaccurate or misleading, but they also fail to take into account many virus transmission vectors, such as fleas/ticks, water, and wild game.
What I don’t understand is why everyone plans on going to the gun store. You did notice that right? Almost everyone who has a plan intends to trek to the local walmart or gunshop and load up. The Oregon Trail message reads: “You made it to the gunstore but died in a brawl for the last box of ammo.”
Aside from shotguns, my family keeps no less than 500 rounds in every caliber we own guns for. Whenever we buy a new gun we also order a crate of ammo for it. It’s a good deal cheaper per round anyway. When SHTF you *WILL NOT* be able to buy anything. Why would a store owner sell you supplies? They’re his and he’s going to keep them for his own family, same goes for store employees. As for walmart, if you aren’t in the store when the news breaks you don’t have a prayer of getting supplies. And even if you get your hands on something, that doesn’t mean you’re leaving the store with it. Those with concealed carry permits, and yes it’s legal to carry in walmart, will be the ones leaving with supplies. “Hey that’s mine! Oh you’ve got a gun, nevermind you can have it.”
On that note, magazines. Buy lots of them. A bullet is useless outside of one. Also handy is a strong backpack or duffle bag, the kind you order from a gun store or military surplus. Nothing is more awkward than carrying around supplies in a suitcase, yeah it kinda worked in zombieland but let’s be honest. No. Make the assumption that power and natural gas will be cut off within 2-5 days after SHTF and be sure to have cooking and heating supplies accordingly. This is where people in the country have a clear advantage, those with fireplaces and stoves can continue eating cooked food. With a small generator they can also power their well pumps to get fresh drinking water, just turn it on for a few minutes to fill the bathtubs and they’re set for a week or two.
Food will be the biggest problem but you can order a years worth of long-term food online now. This is the one thing my family doesn’t have ATM but will probably get next year, not for zombies but because having a couple years worth of food in your closet is never a bad thing. Hell you can even buy canned meats with a 10+ year shelf life. Also worth grabbing is fuel stabilizer so that any gas you have can be used after long-term storage.
