So I recently watched Zombieland and it made me think about how i would deal with zombies. First i would like to lay down some ground rules of how i think things went down.

First off, the disease, this is how i see zombies going down, lets go with it, in this day and age it would have to be latent and spread through some means other than biting. Because it would need to affect a large number of people in a relatively short period of time, i like airborne, would devastate cities and generally make a large number of zombies quickly. Someone could be infected by the disease and carry it for a while, meaning that the disease would have a long incubation period and that would allow for more people to be affected. The idea is to either have one of two situations

1)People realize what is going on and attempt to flee (zombieland)

2)People have no idea what is going on (shaun of the dead)

Situation 1 has many difficulties if you are slow to react and includes many of the problems that we talked about in the first debate

    -Looting

    -Acquiring Weapons

    -Cars stuck on the roads

-Military (force for chaos? (28 days later) force for order?)

    Situation 2 has other problems

-Unaware of what is going on (it’s not like you have PROLOGUE VISION)

-Potentially bad spawn (your house has zombies in it already, WATCH OUT FOR MOM!)

    -Military

    -Acquiring Weapons

I’m drawn towards situation 2 and so i figure i’d use this to describe, in relative detail of my plan of escaping from zombie doom.

    List of important stuff

    4 currently accessible cars

    1 SUV

    1 Minivan

    2 Sedans

    Weapons

    Bat

REALLY SHARP kitchen knives, i have a sliced left index finger to prove it :C

Shotgun, 12 gauge and about 30 shells

    Chainsaw 18″ i think…

Weedwacker, doubtful due to noise and the fact that it is a *edited* and a half to start up, though i do think the devil himself forged that item

    Food

not much that isn’t permanent, canned

    frozen foods

    not much fruit

    Plan

I assume that 1% of the worlds total population survived (6,692,030,277 – 2008 world bank, lets roll with this cause i’m to lazy to google more) 66,920,302 spread all over the world (those people are nonzombies, the still are eatable and probably some were)…depending on how it spread. Sadly to say in this situation, sorry guys i fear that i might have assume that you all are either zombies or in one. :C

Honestly, i’m not to keen on trusting people, in this kind of situation it’s unlikely that those who survived unzombied would be most likely those who would be bad teamates

    1. Arm self, sadly i have nothing really good in my room to use as a weapon (sadly? maybe…)

    2. Determine secruity of house, has it been breached, are zombies afoot?

    3. either eliminate zombies or begin preparing for adventure time

    4. GPS unit, Cell phone, Arms all loaded into the minivan, beats the SUV in terms of fuel economy and cargo space, size advantage over sedans

    5. Since I am assuming that this all happened while everyone was sleeping, and thus people didn’t have time to flee that the roads in most places are clear, 90% maybe one or two night owls did something stupid, especially here in Charlotte. New York and other large cities with sustainable nighttime activity would have more problems

    6. With 30 shells ammo would be a priority, and so off to the gun store. hmmm, i don’t have a lot of cash on me, do i stop at the ATM? Does the ATM work? I say yes, lets go belts and suspenders on this one. If the gun owner is alive, and nonzombie, pay the man and buy more shotgun ammo (hopefully i can get a good deal) and maybe some other guns. If he isn’t alive, *edited*ing LOAD UP

    Likely go-tos

-.308 Good enough for hunting deer, good enough for me

-9mm pistols, .357 and 10mm might be man’s calibers but *edited* if 9mm isn’t easy to find and has much more manageable recoil

    -Semiauto shotguns

    7. Next stop hardware store. See the minivan is *edited*ing pro, but all cars have weak points… Glass. Plywood is my solution. Problem next? Cutting that sum*edited*. Do you go electric and draw all the zombies to you? Do you go classic and risk wearing yourself out? I lean towards manual… but other things might do the trick that i haven’t thought of, next time you go to home depot or lowes, look around, maybe there is some really good car armoring stuff that can be used there.

8.Car Armored and ammoed up, it’s time to food up and gas up, Canned foods are pro, dried foods anything that will last. Don’t forget your vitamins, god knows nothing sucks more than living through a zombie apocalypse to die of scurvy.

    9. Find people, once i’ve got all my *edited* together, call up people on the phone list, no answer, no help sorry moving on. Facebook status: fighting zombies, looking for friends, if you send me one more farmville gift i’ll *edited*ing kill you myself

    10. Destination, if it’s just me, i’m consider myself ultimately *edited*ed, seriously, i’m one man, i don’t know *edited* about sailboats or planes and thus i’m stuck with zombies. Only plan for just me is to try and set a high score. note to self, mark kills on side of van, steal paint for this red is 10, black is one, maybe i will have to revise that, who knows. I don’t see one person beating zombies forever, they are everywhere and ultimately you will tire and they will get you. If i grabbed a group of people, boating becomes more feasible (steal fishing rods) and hopefully we would find some chicks. Otherwise it’s gonna be a really depressing victory (Congrats you survived the finale, but zoey died and you can’t reproduce ((l4d2 is dead to me, it knows what it did)))

anyways thought i’d share this all with you

Here are some things i think would be useful to have

    1. Awareness of news

    2. Ammo Supply

    3. Pro-team

    4. AWESOME mode of transportation

    5. Straps…lots of them

edit: it didn’t quite organize them like i thought it would… :C

This is actually a pretty smart evaluation of the situation.

I think the hardest part for me in this whole zombie *edited* is loved ones…My girlfriend is 7hrs away from me right now unless I am at school…then she’s right down the hall.

If this were to happen at school I believe the easiest thing I could do is Wal-Mart or the local gun store, going to school in Maine has a lot of advantages. If I drive an hour north of where I am I will be completely secluded however, too far north is Canada and I can’t risk going into public areas.

Mini van is an excellent choice and I completely support this. I own a mini-van and drive it well. I was thinking a good way to fortify it would be to go ahead and use power tools, because they are quicker and no matter what you are going to make noise.

Weapons- 12 gauge over and under as well as sawed off side to side. 9mm and several of them. As well as a high functioning power rifle. Like you said if it works for deer it works for me plus it will save a lot of ammo if I use that over an auto-matic. Last gun if this is a realistic assessment would be an MP5. I have seen several of them at gun shops around here.

I was thinking about this some more and i thought of something i really like

beach houses, particularly the ones on slits, if you disable one of the entries you can control the zombies access to your house, get more creative and you could even have a draw bridge.

you could grab a golf cart, those run on electric and would be a good way to get around town without making too much noise.

plus its a well know fact that zombies cannot swim, so you could leave a boat anchored not far off that you could swim too should things ever get extra ridiculous

The problem is most of those 7 reasons are not only inaccurate or misleading, but they also fail to take into account many virus transmission vectors, such as fleas/ticks, water, and wild game.

What I don’t understand is why everyone plans on going to the gun store. You did notice that right? Almost everyone who has a plan intends to trek to the local walmart or gunshop and load up. The Oregon Trail message reads: “You made it to the gunstore but died in a brawl for the last box of ammo.”

Aside from shotguns, my family keeps no less than 500 rounds in every caliber we own guns for. Whenever we buy a new gun we also order a crate of ammo for it. It’s a good deal cheaper per round anyway. When SHTF you *WILL NOT* be able to buy anything. Why would a store owner sell you supplies? They’re his and he’s going to keep them for his own family, same goes for store employees. As for walmart, if you aren’t in the store when the news breaks you don’t have a prayer of getting supplies. And even if you get your hands on something, that doesn’t mean you’re leaving the store with it. Those with concealed carry permits, and yes it’s legal to carry in walmart, will be the ones leaving with supplies. “Hey that’s mine! Oh you’ve got a gun, nevermind you can have it.”

On that note, magazines. Buy lots of them. A bullet is useless outside of one. Also handy is a strong backpack or duffle bag, the kind you order from a gun store or military surplus. Nothing is more awkward than carrying around supplies in a suitcase, yeah it kinda worked in zombieland but let’s be honest. No. Make the assumption that power and natural gas will be cut off within 2-5 days after SHTF and be sure to have cooking and heating supplies accordingly. This is where people in the country have a clear advantage, those with fireplaces and stoves can continue eating cooked food. With a small generator they can also power their well pumps to get fresh drinking water, just turn it on for a few minutes to fill the bathtubs and they’re set for a week or two.

Food will be the biggest problem but you can order a years worth of long-term food online now. This is the one thing my family doesn’t have ATM but will probably get next year, not for zombies but because having a couple years worth of food in your closet is never a bad thing. Hell you can even buy canned meats with a 10+ year shelf life. Also worth grabbing is fuel stabilizer so that any gas you have can be used after long-term storage.

As shown in “The Walking Dead”, zombies are willing to turn large livestock into happy meals so I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.

    Zombies: HARDMODE

    -no trips to the gunstore

-everyone is out to get you

    -military useless/corrupt

first move: arm with best item in house

you want to fill your melee1 spot and your range1 spot

    melee1: aluminium baseball bat

range1: 20 gauge shotgun (modest ammo supply, should conserve)

    get transport

here’s the thing, anytime you get something good, people are going to want to take it, by force. naturally so you have to ensure that you can keep what you have, my plan is to have an emergency bag, a backpack filled with things that i can live with

    backpack items

4 canned goods, beans and soup

can opener/knife (probably knife if i can get hold of a good one)

    lighter, flint at worst

    bandaids

    soap

    toothpaste

the idea is that i can lose my really fancy stuff but at least keep a backpack of useful items that will allow me to survive. this however only works if i’m able to talk them out of just killing me and taking all my *edited*

    goals

    1. move silently as possible, at times when zombies would be inactive and humans would be inactive

    2. secure the necessary goods for permanent survival, somewhere

    3. find said location

    4. secure it

    5. invite friends………maybe, sorry guys but you may invite danger because as you are traveling towards me, perhaps you are assaulted and they force my location from you.

moving at night will attract zombies, but maybe that isn’t so bad, as i think zombies are eaiser to deal with as opposed to humans, zombies won’t lie, would make little to no attempt to conceal themselves. However zombies are incredibly durable, won’t have goods to trade and won’t add to my team.

after making sure my start point is secure i would run through a list of supplies, i wouldn’t use any artificial lighting in rooms that have windows, which pretty much limits it to bathrooms and closets. After i had figured out what i wanted to take and loaded up my transportation i would need to make sure that my car was fit for zombieland travel.

i chose to travel by night, limiting my interactions with people. Anti-social? maybe, but in this case, i feel it’s more about being pragmatic. Zombies just have to be avoid, or perhaps if i stealth the car, turn it off and wait, i can avoid zombies. but where to go to? with humans being actively against me some places aren’t quite as good as they used to be. The beach house idea, mentioned before, would simply draw the attention of anyone, hopefully discouraged by defenses, but if they are organized and sufficiently armed, or simply arsonists, i could be out of luck. A boat does lose some of it’s appeal if there are others. Because by the nature of an efficient market, if i thought of it someone else has also thought of it and i’d have to deal with pirates, which during a zombie apocalypse would be a massive pain in the *edited*.

how would i manage zombie combat? for the most part i would try to avoid it, simple works best. A 20 gauge probably won’t be putting down zombies as well as a 12 gauge would and since my melee is a bat, i’m going to try and use reach with the bat and surprise attacks and force 1v1 situations as much as possible. If i see fallen survivors i might be tempted to loot but this provokes another problem, traps. Avoiding someone else killing me, or at worst taking all my stuff is priority number 1. I fully expect for someone, during the course of my zombie escape, to either attempt to take my *edited*, or succeed in doing so. If the kill me, that’s it game over, i lose and huge bummer. If i can keep my backpack, but lose everything else, this is when things get tricky. I have to move on foot and try to keep away from zombies and humans because i will have nothing to fight with, unless the person is very generous, and i will be easy prey for either. honestly they might have made things better for everyone if they had killed me. I would however bear no grudge, during these times it simply wouldn’t be pragmatic, sure you got revenge, but you might have killed people with important skills for the future.

speaking of the future. I would have to go and try and save chicks, however this would have some drawbacks and probably a few would be decoys for traps, and even worse if the party gets too large there is the possibility of dissent and self destruction. Managing the party should be simple, the party should be at most 4 people, only after securing a location and getting some order should your group seek to expand.

group combat is going to be hard, in video games friendly fire isn’t a big deal. if you are in front, you are going to have to stay low, everyone else is going to have to learn about trigger discipline and basic gun rules if this isn’t going to end in a sad way.

what would you do if you were bitten? not necessarily eaten all the way, but just nipped by a zombie. Yeah it’s game over, but would you wait to become a zombie, take yourself out, or go alah akbar on a large group of zombies strapped with some kind of explosive device. I’m thinking option number 3.

    thoughts:

-the 20 gauge is good if you find yourself in a bind, but you have to remember it is LOUD; and the sound will likely draw more zombies to you.

-The bat is going to require a lot of effort for minimal damage unless you can completely smash the zombie’s skill (breaking its bones won’t help you). Remember that destroying the brain is the only thing that can kill a zombie.

you should use these as initial weapons only until you can replace them with something better. A machete would be a good hand combat weapon, or perhaps an axe. For range, realistically a bow and arrow or silences sniper rifle would be best, but chances of finding such are slim, so better to just keep the 20 gauge until you happen upon a quieter solution, whatever that may be, unless you do manage to get on a boat or someplace else where firing a weapon would not draw zombie attention.

For travel, you should use a bicycle. They are silent and can be used on most any terrain. The best defense you have against zombies is keeping them from discovering you, so moving in silence is paramount, as one zombie will attract others with its moaning. Cars and trucks will probably only serve you temporarily as roads will become inpassible plus they generate noise (and will thus attract zombies). Plus then you have to worry about finding fuel, which, assuming you are heading to a remote location, could prove difficult. Plus no telling if refueling stations will still be usable after a few days as most will dry up from people stockpiling fuel. Like I said, stick with a bike.

Ok now on to the survival kit. We need to add some things or you will not survive long. Here is a list, hopefully you have most of these in your house already:

    * Lightweight poncho for protection against wind and rain

    * Large plastic trash bag as poncho or expedient shelter roof

    * Waterproof matches

    * First aid kit with:

    o bandages

    o sterile gauze pads

o adhesive tape, and gauze tape

    o medical tweezers

    o antibiotic cream

    o Rubbing alcohol

    o suture kit

    o aspirin

    * Water purification tablets for areas where water is available but may be contaminated.

    * Meal replacement bars/protein bars, at least a 24 pack (they are lighter and take up less room than canned foods)

    * High power LED flashlight (able to have batteries replaced, and carry an extra battery)

    * Compass

    * Fixed-blade knife, or multitool knife such as Swiss Army knife

    * Change of underwear and socks (you will regret it if your only pair gets wet and you need to stay on the move)

As for grouping, once you have a plan for a permanent location, you are best if you get in a group of 3-4 people. This will allow people to split tasks such as staying on guard for zombies, construct shelter, gather food/supplies etc. You should avoid getting in larger groups as they are more likely to incur dissent among the ranks or have stupid people do stupid things and cause you all to become zombie feed (plus more people means more people to split supplies among). Make sure the people you choose are smart and don’t do retarded things (like break out their guitar and start a sing a long). You need survivors over friends. If you need to save one member of your family that is fine but you are not having a family reunion here, you are trying to survive for the future.

Thanks to my life-time build-up of asthma medication, I’m going to develop micro-organisms that bond with the zombie virus making me stronger and give me cool super powers while not affecting my looks. Then I will fly around and use my super powers to insta-kill zombies. Then I’ll think about infiltrating the hive.

On that note, shotgun silencers are around $900. If you’re really interested in preparing, that would be the way to go. The don’t entirely silence it but it’s quiet enough that you don’t need hearing protection when firing indoors which should be silent enough to use outdoors with confidence in a zombie killing spree.

Supressors for other guns typically run $500-1200, depending on the caliber and amount of suppression.
