SpectatorThough we wont have another lan til fall semester, so personally what i think we need is
1) more room that that one corner, bc we are really starting to grow as the console portion of the club, especially with the addition of the PS3 players coming soon
2) electricity that wont go out at the begining of a match

other than that i dont see much that needs to be changed besides making sure that we have enough copies of CoD4 and such.
And congratulations to Shae and Cacophony for running the console section so well

SpectatorYes, anything to make Call of Duty run smoother would be wonderful! Power and equipment on hand before things start getting hairy. I’m sure we can manage that next time for sure though.
And thanks to you, Chaos, and Oh Malley for helping keep me sane and helping throughout!

SpectatorI have heard that consoles need more room and clearly saw it, so we are revamping the layout for the LAN to allow more room for consoles, in theory this new layout will give yall 3-4 rows with a lot of room in between, Chris Mouchet is working on the layout and as soon as we have something I will have him post it up.
We’ll basically be rotating some of the tables near the back of the PC section and giving them to you for you all to use.

I’ll arrange your power at the next LAN so that won’t happen.

SpectatorMasterP, get with me and let me know how your going to do it, that way I can put it on the sheet and if the right people are working the day of the LAN they will have it wired and ready for us.

I’ll need to get with Shae before the LAN to get an idea of how many of which console and types of TVs to expect and it should be smooth sailing.
We may have to try tying some of the consoles into the power box as well. I’ll need more info before I know how to set it up but I know it’s possible to prevent it.
The power going out was a good sign, btw. Growth is always good.
Did the UC staff have to reset one of their own breakers to fix it? If so this might be the perfect opportunity to force them to give us the larger power box we’ve wanted all along.

When i discussed the power options with Jeff Hughes, when we first moved into the grand room, they said they have 3phase connections from both sides of the room. Might we re-organize the layout so the box is in the middle of the room might be beneficial.

SpectatorBoth feeds are an equal distance from the consoles and the one we usually use is the easiest to set up for the PCs which have the greatest need. The other feed is behind where the prize tables were.

SpectatorWe saw a new crowd of gamers come in for CoD4. This is good. The only problem there, they initially brought nothing with them. We asked them to bring things and they went and got them, but this delayed the tourney, and eventually caused it to be cut short. I was thinking perhaps we could initiate some sort of discount for those consolers who bring and extraordinary amount of equipment. Many of the consolers bring nothing, and others of us bring 32″ TV’s systems, and every game for the tourny’s to be played and more than an adequate amount of controllers. Not to mention the switch I borrowed from falcon, and 3 ethernet cords. It could help with getting people to bring equipment is all I’m saying.

SpectatorWe talked about doing this last time and I guess it was forgotten, I thought that if they brought their TV and Console they get in free?

SpectatorFrom what we were running at the last lan over near the Xbox area is, 4 32ish inch tv’s and 2 UC style tv’s, along with 6 xboxs
over near the PS3 were 5 ps3’s, 1 24 inch monitor and a few 13 inch tvs.
Thats what was running when the power went out.
Also with falcon leaving us
we are going to need to find a new switch especially with the addition of the ps3 section.April 15, 2008 at 8:23 am #43333Liam

SpectatorFYI, the UC didn’t reset the switches that I am aware of. I simply pulled power from various spots and inside the room. When it was all plugged into one socket what happen was to be expected. I just ran the two remaining drop cords from the other side of the room. I know it was a sucky quick fix, but those guys looked at me as if they were going to kill me if i didn’t fix it. When they walked into the room i asked them if they had done anything and they said no. Which brings up another question. Did we tell them after we left that it was still down? The sockets that were down were the pillar and the wall behind the drinks.

If this wasn’t done GET ON IT NOW. LIKE STOP READING AND CALL THEM.

SpectatorI mean the Guy on Duty for the UC was made well aware of the situation at hand and I told him what I did to fix it and that he needed to have something done about it.
But you are right we need to double check up on him.

SpectatorSome people, *cough* me *cough* would enjoy it better if the prize distribution was more fair to the winners of tournaments. Some people got like two shirts, a hat, and a soundcard or something, and other people who won a tournament didn’t get anything. It was simply unfair. I was trying to remain anonymous in my complaints, but it didn’t get me as far as this might. Just figured I’d complain about the crap that I was unhappy about.
NEW PRIZE SYSTEM OR SWITCH BACK! UGGHHH… Some serious bull*edited*… Sorry for the language, it’s just how I feel.
April 15, 2008 at 12:29 pm #43387MasterP
SpectatorI do agree with that. While I don’t mind giving the bigger prizes away in a raffle of some sort, I should have gotten SOMETHING for winning TF2.
Also, for team based games where your score actually matters, you might want to consider giving a prize for the highest score. For example, in CoD4 when my team lost I still had the highest score out of both teams. It was a much higher score than Shane Baker, who in fact, is a terrible RCC.

I ran around to a bunch of random people and had them start pulling out of the hat. Yea i think we all agree it ended up being unfair, but we did try something new, so the people who win every lan doesn’t continue to win at every lan, however it backfired and i think we will be attempting a new system.
Speaking of which. How do you propose we do a prize system that allows everyone a fair chance at getting one.

I think what we did is fine. However: I think that the door-prizes should be seperate from the tournament prizes and each person may only win ONCE.
April 15, 2008 at 1:17 pm #43398Cacophony
SpectatorWhile it did suck that some people won multiple prizes, I still liked the idea of a raffle.
Though perhaps we can have a raffle alongside prizes for the winners of the LAN. I don’t know how feasible this is, but it’d be fun.
April 15, 2008 at 6:08 pm #43430Bitey
SpectatorI had already been thinking about Liam’s idea, if you only win once this spreads the prizes out much more so at least you will get something. Hind-sight is 20/20 guys, this is how we voted on handling the prizes at the meeting so we need to discuss at the next meeting so we can set that into stone.
April 15, 2008 at 8:50 pm #43444Nickname
SpectatorI am fine with the prizes but the raffle ticket was BS; if you want to do a raffle, make them buy the tickets separate and don’t just give them to everyone!
Also I have to speak for my friend Darren West whose name was drawn from the hat for the raffle ticket then it was decided that since he wasn’t there he wouldn’t get the prize?!? WTF?!? He paid for more raffle tickets and basically got screwed from the club. If you want to only give stuff to people that are still there, tell them they have to be present to win prizes IN ADVANCE.

I think you should be able to win as many times as you won a game. And door prizes should be seperate, as liam said. I think there should be a set number of prizes for a set amount of winners. Each winner could get a ticket and get a random prize. This should work in theory as long as the prizes are equally good. As for a grand prize, there could be a separate raffle just for it. Sorry for complaining, and I don’t blame anyone for it. It just happened and that was that. I’m not criticizing anyone.
There has to be a fun way to do prizes. I was thinking something along the lines of a gift exchange sort of thing. Maybe you guys have done it before, but the place I used to work at did it for christmas. You’d draw numbers from a hat and in the order they were numbered randomly, everyone would go and pick unknown items at random. The person would then unwrap the item and reveal it to the group. The second person would then have a choice of getting person #1’s item or choosing another unknown item at random. If person #2 picks an unknown item, they unwrap it and reveal it to the group. If they choose person #1’s item, then they keep it and person #1 goes and picks another item from the random stack or from another person. This process continues. All the while, more and more gifts are revealed. Higher numbers get more of a choice.
Yeah, that method may get kinda ugly. And people would probably find it unfair. It sure is fun when you’re doing it in a small, cheap prize, family-style setting though.
Let’s see.. I had another idea, but forgot it while writing about the other style. It’s nice to have this opinion out in the open.
April 15, 2008 at 10:52 pm #43451Bitey
SpectatorOk again as I said the reason we did the prizes the way we did them was so the same people could not win the prizes all the time, Xavierking your still new to the club and don’t realize what it has been like at past LANs, the same person walks away with almost all the prizes, with the way we did it anyone had a chance to win a prize, much better that way, instead of the same 2-4 people getting all the goodies.
Also the method you named is called Dirty Santa and your right it would not work well at all at a LAN event.

SpectatorI’ll make sure to check back before the next lan in the fall so I can be more prepared to bring my equipment again, I’m not very active on here so I didn’t know you guys were in need of tv’s and the like. Had a great time, but I would of liked the COD4 tournament to be a little longer.
April 19, 2008 at 12:10 am #43790Bitey
SpectatorYou can do that by showing up to meetings, being active on here, and/or helping us with the awareness of the club.
