**EDIT** I’m not asking about the Verizon DSL service…

So, on average my Mediacom internet since all the college students moved in runs an avg of 500kilobits per/s…

All last year and summer I got between 4Mbps – 7.5Mbps.

Thus far the best answer I got from tech support was that the node is overloaded and I need to move.

After looking around I saw Verizon Fiber Optic Service and thought it might be a good idea. 15Mbps down and 2Mbps up isn’t bad. The price would be 39.99 for months 2-7 and 49.99 after that.

    Currently I’m paying 45.95 – 16.00discount for 7.5Mbps (that I am in no way receiving…)

I just want a reliable internet provider that can at least guarantee me 3-6Mbps. This 500kilobit crap isn’t cutting it.

Has anybody tried or used the Verizon FiOS service? I checked and it is available to me. Just thought I’d ask here first. Mediacom is by far the worst service I’ve ever had (Cable Internet Wise).

    Thanks,

Umm are you sure it is available because, I know they have literally almost covered New York with it, but seeing it up here might be pretty rare. If you can truly get it though I would highly recommend it.

FiOS is expanding across NC as we speak but I’m not in range of FiOS at the moment booo :o lol. I was told that they are currently ripping out all copper lines and replacing them with Fiber. He said the backbone is whats taking so long and couldn’t give me a timeframe but did assure me it would be sooner than later >.<

still sucks for me though, here is what mediacom did today:

4pm I had 7.2Mbps, now I’m at 400Kbps… always drops at 5:30pm and stays dropped til 3am… doesn’t get to full speed until 10am…

Everyday it is like this. I cannot stand it anymore.

I wish I could find a suitable replacement!

If you can get FiOS, do get it. Fiber optic lines are light years more reliable than DSL and moderately moreso than cable as well. Their promised speed will be what you will get 99% of the time.

For the price, no other provider can touch that package.

I can barely play any online games… Glad I pay $45 a month for this piece of crap service. Is Verizon DSL any better? I doubt it is but I guess it might have to be better than this bullcrap.

Nice. On campus I never really had a problem with my internet unless there was a network virus or something. Always enjoyed those blazing speeds. I had the technician come out here again and he basically told me its out of his hands and all I can do is make my line scream louder than the others. (AKA more dB = louder line = I get my data through).

I could pay for the 15Mb line but I would only get a 1-3Mb increase at peak times :(. He suggested I take my tv off the splitter and just connect the in cable straight to the cable to my modem to give myself more db and I might try that tonight to see if it helps.

At any rate, wtb FiOS, too bad it isn’t here yet :(. I did hear they are putting it in town as we speak but not here in cullowhee yet.

Not bad, you still won though, clearly cheating

That would only help if you plugged into the mainline from the road directly. Since you’ve still got a spliter outside your house you wouldn’t see any noteworthy increase. Contrary to what they will tell you, they CAN increase the signal going into your house, they just don’t like to do it because they have to rebalance the lines at the last repeater. Takes maybe an hour to do.

Every splitter between your modem and the road drops the signal by 3.5db. So removing one will help. :) Remove as many as you can. I split the line coming into the house, one goes to the modem, the other side goes to all of my tv’s. I run a kick-*edited* connection ever since doing that.

That’s now Time Warner runs their lines. It helps some but if the signal from the road isn’t strong there’s not a whole lot than can be done about it from his end. You might try swapping out for high quality splitters but that probably won’t help much.

Also, keep complaining. You are paying them for a service they aren’t delivering on and you have the right to complain. Next time the signal drops call them, they’ll check the signal strength on your modem remotely and say something like “Well it seems were having signal issues in your area. We’ll fix that as soon as possible”. ASAP for cable is usually a couple days so just keep on them until it’s fixed.

Actually it can be in the line itself. Older lines will increase the loss of signal strength from one end to the other. When I had my cable modem installed, it needed a new coax cable from the splitter to the modem. And that’s all that took to fix it. You really probably need a combination of these things that have been mentioned.
