SpectatorThe system link ports for console usage, via the PS3 and Xbox 360 specifically need to be opened. Prior to the ports closing, the System Link feature on popular video game titles like Halo created strong ties and small communities of students across the campus and enhanced the student life for a large portion of students. I know for a fact in the past that several students have left Western simply because there was nothing left for them to do on campus after they segregated the campus network into V-LANs. After the V-LANs were set into place, the student ties to one another were severed as well and the communities that they had built had suffered.
The V-LANs were put into place to limit, if not entirely prevent, the widespread infection of students’ computers by Trojans, viruses, worms, and other malware of the like.
By reopening the System Link ports for console use only, it would enrich the students experience on campus and ultimately would retain current student population as well as attract new students as well. New communities will form again and existing communities, such as WCU Gaming Club, will grow and strengthen in size and ability.
Reopening these ports have greater benefits for Western Carolina University and its students than if they remained closed.

SpectatorI totally agree with this entirely. When Halo 2 first came out during our Freshman year we would often time have 4 or 5 rooms full of people playing a whole array of games against players through out the campus, in fact I met most of the guys I hung out with first through playing on the open lan. When the ports were closed it really hindered the ability to meet people from other parts of campus, and segregated the gaming communities to just within your own building, and often times people were forced to play on XBox Live which can often times ruin a person’s gaming experience, and chase people away gaming entirely. I think re-opening the ports for gamers would allow for a more openness of our Console Gaming community as a whole, and bring more people into the University via these opportunities.

I can’t find the ports listed anywhere. They might be in an instruction manual.

nvm I was thinking the dorms were all on the same vlan (which actually would make more sense) but there might still be a way to get it to work; for example you can remote desktop from a computer in norton to a computer in harrill (i believe this is true) so the vlans might be mostly transparent among the dorms.

SpectatorI brought this up to networking in the past, but it never went very far. good luck.

They have the port filtering nailed to where most default protocols are blocked between the resnet subnets but other somewhat useful ones aren’t. If the right port(s) were cleared I imagine networking could route them so they go throughout the resnet system. Hard part is finding what port it is and to do that you’ll probably need to use a network analyzer to monitor system link traffic as I can’t find the ports for it listed anywhere.
For those who want this really bad, how about helping do some research on this front. Look through instruction manuals and/or ask MS. This process would be much easier if we had the ports.

SpectatorTry port 8602.
XBC used to use port 8602 before Xbox Live had come out, and was also how people played the original Halo vs. each other. I wouldn’t be surprised to see XBL also using 8602 for their TCP/UDP.
